  1. I work with Texas, Florida and LSU alums. The Gator was strangely subdued this morning (ha ha) but the other two gave me a real ration of $hit. "Didn't know it was basketball season.." etc. My thought turn to FFR, who must really be catching hell today at work.
  2. That's only nine muffed punts or kickoffs (186 yards total offense = 63 points). We will need a bigger boat! 21 won't cut it.
  3. It did look like he got his bell rung but he was also favoring his right wrist. I saw no ice bag though. Either injury would be of real concern.
  4. Mr. Miller is my adopted player and my heart lept to my throat when he went down. We're going to miss him this week but hopefully he will not have anything more than a sprain and be ready to play again in a couple of weeks. I haven't searched the stats but it appeared he had at least one, maybe two unassisted tackles on the abbreviated day. As always, he was a presence in the middle. We all miss you, Joseph, take good care of your injury.
  5. DEFINITELY a subliminal message in the video! If you concentrate you can read his lips mouthing "Vote YES!".
  6. Sorry, Playmaker can't use the computer just now. The jaw will be unwired in six weeks, when the full body cast comes off.
  7. Don't be so quick to dismiss Gore. While standing in Kroger's checkout line, I read that he enjoys water sports.
  8. Brad, I'm sorry to hear of you and your family's loss. Deepest sympathies to you all.
  9. My adopted player, Mr. Joseph Miller, had a good game against the best competition he is likely to see this year. I call him Mr. out of respect for the man-sized job he did/does. He did not appear on the stat sheet...so you might think he did not do well. I watched our men in the trenches, who were easy to see on that big screen at the Pourhouse and Mr. Miller's number was on screen regularly. He was around the ball all night. I particularly want to say I noticed his hustle on a play to the sideline where he took a good angle of pursuit and very nearly knocked one of their speed-demons out of bounds about five yards up from the line of scrimmage. That was a Booger move. Congratulations, and let's get ready to get in the win column against Rice.
  10. RE: that Texas game, I remember it well. It was 27 -0 at the half AND at the end of the game. My memory says it was 10 sacks, 8 of them on Chris Simms. Cedric Benson (NFL bust) was held to something like 38 net yards I think. I remember being in the car listening to the UT postgame show and hearing Mack Brown say that we were a good team and would win our conference. He also said that Booger was an All-American and that they didn't block him all night. Someone with the old stats can feel free to check my memory...I AM 63 and quite senile.
  11. Crip, You want Harry orCerebus or FFR or SUMG. One of them is bound to make the trip. You'll get straight, realistic information. Most of the rest of us (self included) drink the green kool-aid and smoke peyote. We think that on any given day...shit happens. Ball could bounce our way. The aforementioned gentlemen are more realistic.
  12. Buford, You DO remember. The day I first met "big Jack" was in 1963 at the men's dorm at Pan American. He was hairless THEN. First, he was a class act and a regular guy. Second, he had smarts (book and street). Probably the most prominent athlete I have ever known personally. We were all so happy to see him get the recognition he deserved. The 76ers came to Edinburg to play an NBA exhibition/preseason game his second year in the league and it was awesome. By the way, my yearbook has a photo of him with his wingspan measured by a tape measure by the team's trainer...6' 9" !! That is as TALL as he was also. No wonder he could do those alley-oop dunks! Another memory - St. Edwards came to Edinburg and they had a big center named Mike Otolski from my hometown (South Bend, IN). After the game I went to the locker room to say hello to Otolski and found him sitting with an ice bag on his face. Jackson had gone so high for a rebound and stuck his legs and elbows out that he KICKED Otolski in the side of the head. Sounds unbelievable but a photographer caught it and it is in the Pan American yearbook (El Bronco).
  13. Actually, Rick is in a deep funk and is receiving psychiatric help after the asswhipping last Saturday night. He is in the bunk next to mine and we are learning to crochet.
  14. MANY years (and beers) ago, Houston Baptist had a very respectable NAIA program. I remember seeing them in my undergrad years at Pan American, as well as Texas Western. Pan American had Lucious Jackson (MVP, Tokyo Olympics and NBA Rookie of the Year (Phila. 76ers)); Texas Western had Jim "Bad News" Barnes. That was a helluva game in Edinburg and I think TW beat PA by 4 points. Houston Baptist played competitvely in those circles. I suspect they are trying to rebuild their proud tradition. They play a stronger schedule this year than we do.
  15. I don't think it was a Pourhouse problem, I think it was a Coors problem. Pourhouse appears to be a strong supporter and deserves our support. Go here and get your Alumni Association answers > http://www.untalumni.com/ It will not dent your billfold like Irvine!
  16. Read this. Click me! My post is #9 but there is a similar experience.
  17. I attended promptly at 3:00 p.m. to check it out. The food was good and reasonably priced. They had Shiner-in-a-can, which I was also able to buy on the Deck. YESSS!!! The video thing was nice but the whole system went down. Got tired of waiting for them to fix it so I left for the Coors/Pourhouse tent for a helping of abuse. Felt like the bastard at the family reunion. Then came the Mean Green March, albeit prematurely. A funny thing happened on my way into the Alumni event. My membership card is quite old; the young man checking ID thought my card was expired. I pointed out to him that I was clearly a Lifetime Member and then asked him if he thought I looked expired. There were rough edges but the Alumni Association gets a thumbs-up for this first try.
  18. Basketball scheduling seems to be different than football in some respects..."tuneup" games are more tolerated. Having said that, other than some conference games I only see two that I'm remotely interested in seeing this year. Then, it will depend on the day of the week. I hope the road schedule is more meaty or our RPI will be lower than whale shit.
  19. I was glad to see we're scheduling teams like Ball State, Ohio and Army next year. Those are the teams we need to play and possibly beat to build a record that gets respect. Our conference-mates are doing a great job of raising the Sun Belt profile this year, adding to the attention. We're not ready to go toe-to-toe with OU, UT, LSU, K-State, ad nauseum, but let's not overcorrect and load up with the maximum 1-AA opponents allowed. Our OOC schedule needs to be from CUSA, the MAC, the WAC, etc. Before K-State, I thought we could play with Tulsa; we now obviously have to work to get up to their level.
  20. Acknowledge what your point is, meanrob. Many, if not most, of those programs have long winning traditions against top-shelf competition and don't have to prove anything to anyone. I think their fans go along with "tuneup" games and accept that/have been sold that. We haven't been there yet and don't fit that description. If we aspire to be a respectable, recognized program we need to do it against credible competition.
  21. NOTE: I went by the tent and was run out of there like I farted or something. I was informed in no uncertain terms that this was a private party and I was not welcome without an invitation.
  22. Now THAT is a group of wide receivers!!
  23. SMUt and TCU did it yesterday, and I think it makes them look foolish. If I was one of their alumni I would question their "dumbing down" the schedule. Even if we go 0 - 12, I would rather forego playing 1-AA teams. I oppose lowering standards just to engender a false sense of success...others just snicker anyway and say "But WHO did you play?". Let's resolve to raise the standard of our team's play to where we can win playing a 1-A schedule. That is the way to get respect...earn it.
  24. That game with Tulsa is probably my lowest point mentally in recent years. It was worse than a kick in the nuts. I was devastated. I'm glad my adopted player Joseph Miller remembers how that felt. He will provide some senior motivation to the men up front to take the fight to the Golden Showers.
  25. On offense, Vizza is going to be sharp! No turnovers. 30 of 35 for 450 yards. On defense, my adopted son Joseph Miller has been pissed all week. This is NOT the best o-line K-State has seen in years, THIS IS TULSA. He will have 7 solo tackles today, 3 for a loss. Tulsa will be held to 70 yards rushing today by the defensive front, allowing the rest of the team to focus on their Johnson...er, let me rephrase that. The rest of the D can zero in on their formidable passing attack and hold them to, say, 300 yards. Victory's in store, what 'ere the score, my friends!! P**s on the Golden Showers!
