They eventually started routing the blue line over to the fields North of the softball stadium. The police and parking folks routing the traffic did tell us that they oversold the blue lot. Really glad I prepaid for that. Not.

Forget the coaching, first thing Wren needs to do is issue an apology to every blue lot parking pass holder. We’re probably not on the big donor list but we’re the diehards that sit through a lot of bad football. Last night was inexcusable. Sad part is that last night means we won’t have another crowd over 20k all year, so really don’t know that anything has to change. It’s another kick to the nads and I’m freaking sick and tired of everything being so half assed around here.

How many people said “eff this” and didn’t bother to come in?

The thing is, once you got in that line there was no way to peel off. You were just stuck. Parked in line. I asked an attendant if something had gone wrong, equipment issues, etc. They told me to get there earlier. Awesome response. Thanks. -
***OFFICIAL GMG SMU vs. UNT IN-GAME DISCUSSION***

Above all it was a terrible play call as evidenced by the 3 on 1 that Robert’s found himself in. But yes, that pick was more on Aune. Robert’s wasn’t going to score because there were 3 smu players between him and the end zone, but that ball by Aune was lobbed up high. Robert’s had to slow down and reach for that ball, which is why smu defenders were able to get up under him and cause the bobble. Throw that with zip, chest high or lower, and further toward the sideline and he doesn’t have to slow up, shields the ball with his body, and worst case drops it or gets cut at the knees for no gain. To be fair, it’s probably not something he has to get right in practice as slow as our DBs are. -
***OFFICIAL GMG SMU vs. UNT IN-GAME DISCUSSION***

You better be tough as nails to be a receiver on this team. Every ball is late or under thrown (not to mention all the throws into double and triple coverage WTF), allowing any separation to be closed down and meaning you’re always fighting for the ball or catching in traffic. Absolutely zero opportunities for YAC. Our QBs are almost as bad as the last days of DannyMac. It’s sad. -
This is exactly how I feel. Been a season ticket holder, mean green club/mgsf member, etc since 2001. Last night was a terrible experience. The parking for blue lot was a joke. To be there an hour before kickoff and not make it in by kickoff would have been acceptable if the game had been attended well. I’d just kick myself for not getting there early and tailgate all day (like I do just about every other year but couldn’t this year). Big crowds equal logistics problems, you know. Its damn near inexcusable when we walked in to a half empty stadium.

There is a definite pecking order in Texas, at least in everyone’s head. For us, utsa is another upstart that makes it tougher to pull kids out of central Texas. Texas st and Sam Houston would be more disliked here if we had to play them regularly.

That's a lot of turnover, but what does it look like when you add in players from the 2-deep last year? I don't know, just asking. They have some serious, on-paper, talent that transferred in and we have looked overmatched the last 3 times we've played them. Hoping they'll miss on more of those guys than they hit, but their track record has been unbelievable with transfers recently. I'll, personally, be praying for rain. It'll tick my wife and kids off, but it will definitely slow down Mordecai and their receivers. In great weather conditions, I think we can handle their running game, but if we get pressure like we did last week (which is to say almost none) Mordecai will carve up our secondary and they will win going away. I know this is the wrong thread, but I'm doing it anyway... Optimistic: (game is played in wet, sloppy conditions) UNT - 31 SMU 17 Pessimistic: (Clear skies, no wind) UNT - 17 SMU 45 Realistic: (overcast, storms around but not a washout) UNT - 24 SMU 35

This is very much the first game of the year. Up at halftime is great. Really great considering how much stupid we just witnessed. -

I'm with this guy/gal. This will be higher scoring than the game last year. I think both teams are fairly evenly matched. They had an easier start to their schedule last year and raced out to a nice record, but fell as they faced tougher competition down the stretch. We were exactly the opposite and got them at home. I tend to think we're going to be better than we were a year ago....they might be, as well. It should be a nail-biter. -
For all the hand wringing, to do what Tech just did ($25k salary) you need to raise $2 million to cover an 85 man football team. If you want to cover the walkons and basketball players it goes to $3 million. That’s a lot of money for me, but for the level of competition we’re stepping into it is the expectation to have donors who can cover that. As others are saying, NIL is robbing Peter to pay Paul. It’s going to be $3 million that could have gone to other projects, every single year, coming off the top. So unless we tap new donors expect to see some dated looking facilities in a few years.

Were you around for 2017 and 2018? He’s already demonstrated he can produce 9 win seasons. We’ve dropped off since then, mostly due to staff turnover impo. From where I sit, this is the best staff he’s had since that 2018 season. We also have more quality depth across the board than we’ve had in his entire tenure. It’s hard to guarantee success as you never know what will popup in any given season, but I think we’re in position to have a very positive year in the W/L column.

SMU is about to shock the nation on NIL
TIgreen01 replied to mustangfan's topic in Mean Green Football
History is not on their side with regard to attendance. They have relied on the big state schools to drive attendance since 1960 (when the Cowboys gave Dallas another football alternative). Here's their attendance from their most successful year since the 1930s... This was the real reason they and all the privates were left behind for the Big 12. Not enough interest. The death penalty cemented smu's left behind status but Rice and TCU were absolutely abysmal at getting people into games, as well. Look at that Nov 6 game against Rice. SMU was #2, undefeated and 25k reported attendance is all they could muster between them? Then you look at Tamu and Arkansas coming to town. Those schools bring their own fans, as we all know. The small privates just aren't able to generate the big interest in butts in seats or eyeballs on broadcasts and so they are always facing an uphill battle. SMU can spend all they want and Dallas area fans still won't care. -
Ok, thanks. How's the meat/butcher? Akin to Kroger, Albertsons, Walmart, Target with usually select only cuts, or more in line with Market Street, Central Market, Sams, Costco with choice/prime options? I grade grocery stores primarily by the quality of the meat and beer selection. You know, like every other red blooded American male should. 🙂

Um, why not just look to the NFL for answers? The salary cap is currently $208 million. Coaches salaries are hard to find beyond HC and coordinators, but average staff size is 15 with most assistants making $500k or under (from what I can gather). Head coach and coordinator salaries are much higher but top out at $8mil for HC and ~$2mil for high end coordinators. Total it all up and NFL teams might spend $20mil on coaching, or less than 10% of what they spend on players.

Didn't we already "cover the cost of attendance" a few years back? What you're getting at would come across better by simply stating that players deserve a piece of the revenue pie. Ok, fine....then split the revenue pie and give them a share. NIL is not doing that. NIL is asking for donations to ADD money over the top that would just go directly to the players.

I'm happy to see that UNT has got a coalition formed, but I would love to get inside the minds of the major donors participating. What drives them to donate in this way? What's the pitch? Asking so that hopefully I can hear it and get on-board. As it stands, I don't have much interest in donating to that cause, and I suspect neither does the vast majority. I admit that I'm struggling with where the line is at for just switching over to supporting high school and pro football only. Football has been used to help drive up interest in the school (IE: applications and enrollment) and to help pull in donors who will donate to not just football, but the rest of the school. If the push for donations becomes, instead, about donating money that we give directly to the athletes, where do you draw the line then for money going to the players and money going to the school? I'll donate all day long to the school to help provide scholarships for the athletes so they can get an education. I'll donate for building projects and anything that helps us attract better teachers/faculty. I'm not going to donate a bunch of money so Joe QB can drive a porche while he's here. In that instance, why would I do that instead of just going down the street and buying NFL tickets instead? This is the issue we face with NIL.

Depends on how much of that UNT staff went with him. He’d have needed to retool his defensive staff though. A coaching staff is exactly that…a staff, not just one guy. Even Saban is replacing coaches regularly at Bama. It’s more about how well he can identify talented assistants, promote and retain or replace. Seth has shown a willingness to change things up when things aren’t working and he’s worked through a lot of coaching staff turnover after being so successful those first 3 years. Bringing in Bennett was a phenomenal hire, but he’s been less successful putting together an offensive staff that rivals that first one he had.
