Lady Eagles Add Two Basketball Players

DENTON (4/16/03) -- North Texas women's basketball coach Tina Slinker has announced that two players have signed National Letters of Intent to play basketball for the Lady Eagles. Jill Medlock, a 5-7 guard from the University of Arkansas-Fort Smith and Talicia Sanders, a 6-2 post player from Hightower High School in Fort Bend, Texas will both join the Lady Eagles in 2003.

Medlock led Arkansas-Fort Smith to a 26-2 record by averaging a team-high 14.6 points per game. Medlock and the Lady Lions advanced to the NJCAA Region II championship game before losing to Northeastern Oklahoma A&M in the final. Medlock was an 85 percent free throw shooter and led her team with 86 made free throws and 101 attempts. She averaged 2.6 steals, 3.9 rebounds and 3.1 assists while shooting 49 percent from the field. She also made 37 three pointers.

"We were extremely fortunate to get Jill at this point in the process," Slinker said. "She is a very good shooter that should be able to help us right away, but the most important thing she will bring is leadership. She will be able to help us in a lot of ways."

Sanders averaged 15.0 points per game to lead Fort Bend Hightower to the Class 5A state semifinals where it lost to Georgetown. She also averaged 7.0 rebounds per game, 2.0 blocks per game, 3.0 steals per game and 1.0 assist per game. Sanders was a McDonalds All-America nominee after helping the Hurricanes to a 30-6 record.

"We are very excited about Talicia's ability to run the court," Slinker said. "She is a big post player with great mobility and can play both the four and the five position. She played on a very successful high school team and knows what it takes win."

North Texas finished the 2002-2003 season with a 12-16 overall record, losing to Western Kentucky in the second round of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament.
