NT Women Open Season With 88-73 Exhibition Win

DENTON (11/6/03) -- Sophomore Jamie Armstrong and junior transfer Jill Medlock recorded double-doubles to lead the North Texas women's basketball team to an 88-73 win over the Houston Jaguars in an exhibition game Thursday night at the Super Pit.

Armstrong shared team-high scoring honors with 19 points to go along with her team-leading 13 rebounds. Senior forward Kim Blanton also finished with 19 points while Medlock, a junior transfer, finished with 13 points and 10 rebounds.

Blanton, one of two seniors on the team this season, connected on seven of 13 field goals and also hit five of seven free throw attempts. In 26 minutes she also had 4 of the team's 16 steals.

Armstrong shot eight of 20 from the floor and dropped in two of four free throws. Medlock, a newcomer who transferred to North Texas from Arkansas-Fort Smith, finished one assist shy of notching a triple double in her first game in an NT uniform. She led the team with nine assists and also had a team-high six steals in the game.

North Texas battled to a 10-point lead in the first half before the Jaguars cut the deficit down to one point at 34-33 with 3:19 left in the period. NT outscored Houston 10-2 over the remainder of the half to post a 44-35 lead at the intermission.

After the first eight minutes of the second half North Texas had the game in control by staking a 20-point lead three different times in the period. Houston, who was led by Nekesha Henderson's 33 points, fought back and pulled to within six points, at 79-73, with 2:43 left in regulation.

A Blanton free throw followed by baskets by Blanton, Dorota Klat and Armstrong that went unanswered quickly build the cushion back to 13 points with 24 seconds left.

The North Texas women's team will hosts its second and final exhibition game next Friday, Nov. 14, at 6:00 p.m. at the Super Pit in the opening game of a doubleheader with the Mean Green men's team.
