SW ITA Regionals @ TCU

Round of 64 Qualifying

Franca, Idalina (7) UNT, def. Iriarte, Erika TAMU CC, 6-2; 6-2

Schumulbach, Megan (5) UNT, def. Mathis, Sloane LSU, 6-3; 6-4

Drabkova, Alt-Monica UTSA, def. Burtain, Aziza Aba UNT, 7-6; 6-3

Round of 32 Qualifying

Franca, Idalina (7) UNT, def. Satge, Lena ULM, 6-2; 6-1

Schumulbach, Megan (5) UNT, def. Cirne-lima, Julia UTPA, 6-2; 6-4

I am guessing Sammie M. is injured or she is into the main draw, she was in orginal qualifying singles draw.

Aziza Aba Burtain / Samantha Moreton def. Bonnie Phillips / Jana Simurkova (SELU) 9-8, very nice win

Sarah Lancaster / Zauft Courtney (UT) (6) def. Idalina Franca / Megan Schumulbach 8-1, tough first round match-up

Good job so far and keep proving me wrong.

UNT Athletics Story

Good showing so far. Love the coaches and the energy and coaching ability they have brought to the team so far.

Good luck to the ladies in getting into the Main Draw for Singles.

Megan and Idalina both made Main Draw then lost first match.

Sammi and Aziza lost in 2nd round in close match with Baylor.

Ok in Consolation it shows all of UNT players No-Showed their matches beginning on Saturday.

My question is why no-show and not get all the matches you can? They did this in Lubbock in the last tournament, I can understand in order to get home, but Regionals are only at TCU. Anyone have the scoop? Not a good precendent to have your players default matches, rather than getting match tough.

      SB at Charlotte (5/3-5/24)

      The bats have definitely been the biggest disappointment the past two years. The run support simply hasn't been there enough. Now, I'm still optimistic for the tournament. Last year we won three straight to make it to the title game. But that double bye would have been nice especially if we only have two reliable pitchers right now.

      Why the NCAA model is dying and will be replaced

      You can rebuild a college basketball rotation to contend at a high level in one year. That is just 8-9 players. And if you get lucky with 2-3 absolute monsters, you can make a run in any given season. Of course, then those 2-3 monsters will get poached by deeper pockets and you will have to start all over again. But still, it is possible. But we can’t rebuild a college football two-deep in one year. That’s almost 50 players that we need to compete at a high level. And as has been demonstrated, any time we get football players who have any kind of success in the NIL era, they are gone quicker than you can say “Chandler Rogers”. Another reason it is easier for us to compete in the NIL era in basketball is because that sport is dominated by guards. There are LOTS of talented guards available in college basketball and some of the very best can fall through the cracks and land with us for atleast a season. And while many people would say that college football is dominated by quarterbacks (and that position is VERY important)… what really separates the elite college football programs from everyone else are the defensive linemen. The supply of 18-24 year-old humans who weigh 300 pounds with the strength to take on multiple blockers while also having the speed to run down a quarterback is no where near the demand. And these defensive linemen usually take a while to develop. But anytime a defensive linemen shows a hint of promise, he gets funneled to the highest bidder and that won’t be us. Which means we will never be able to compete with the SEC or Big 10 in football.
