  1. That's nice they were there but anytime the band is representing the university, they should be in uniform.
  2. Here we go about the band again, but the problem with that chant is that is generic and used across the country by other high schools and universities. We should be able to do better.
  3. Other than the immediate area by the campus (called Methodist Flats!), you don't see much Duke memorabilia around Durham, but in Chapel Hill, it's a different story. Everything reminds you of UNC..even the town's fire trucks and buses are painted Carolina blue. I do recall that lime green McDonald's during the Fry era. The franchise owners were at every game, wearing their McDonald's blazers. Regarding the school's selectivity, I agree that increasing the admission standards should be a priority. It should be difficult to attend UNT, not convenient.
  4. With all of the discussion concerning the new coach, we have not spent any time on the game at hand; an historic occasion due to the last game at Fouts Field. But I would like to say thank you to the seniors that have stuck with the program in spite of a very disappointing four years. We appreciate what you have done and wish you all the best in your future.
  5. The uniforms were hunter green and yes, no one came to games, at least during the four years I was there in the early 70's. As I've posted before, there were about 300 in the stands when we beat San Diego State who was ranked 18 at the time. The reported attendance was stretched to 1000. I had the good fortune to meet Odus Mitchell and he was well respected long after he retired.
  6. That is an interesting connection that I had not considered. Who knows what is really going on? I can't say I'm very excited if McCarney is indeed the choice. As someone else said, why hasn't he been picked up as a HC again instead of serving as a position coach? If I correctly recall from the job announcement, it stated that the position called for someone with previous head coaching experience, either at the college or NFL (!) level. This would rule Canales out.
  7. you google so true wikipedia no lie burma shave best buy
  8. If I recall correctly, the COM was ranked #17 in the last US News Ranking which was many years ago. As most every college in the US has a music department, that is nothing to sneeze at and I also feel it is fairly accurate. What hurts our COM is a lack of funding. You may have 200 trumpet majors but only three or four full time professors of trumpet. A student could complete their entire undergrad degree without studying with a tenure track professor. Anther problem due to the lack of money is the inability to hire "name" professors. Many professors make their "name" because of their employ at North Texas, not before. While this is very subjective, the first rank of schools would include perhaps Curtis, Julliard, Eastman, New England Conservatory, Indiana and some of the Ivy's. North Texas would belong in the second group, along with Cincinnati, Michigan, Illinois, Florida St, etc. In New York where I work, I know of a few working classical musicians from North Texas but not many... primarily singers. I can also say that no one shakes in their boots when I tell them I have my undergrad degree from North Texas. In fact, most of them look at me with some sort of amusement! In other words, how did you get from there to here? But, I know North Texas prepared me well and I am really proud of our school. In fact, I intend to invite the opera theatre to perform next year in NYC so more people can know of our talented students. PS. No doubt that the UNT jazz is #1.
  9. Dear Doyoubleedgreen, Welcome to the board. I know the band works hard. Many on this board may not realize that for your many hours of rehearsal a week, you only get one credit hour. But that is the bane of existence for a music major! Your response to criticism is disappointing. If you have a thin skin or are adverse to criticism, you should look for another profession because you are going to hear lots more of it in your lifetime. Attacking your audience is not a proper response nor is justifying a sloppy performance because the audience is "drunk". You are budding professionals and should conduct yourself accordingly, no matter if your audience is a packed Fouts Field or ten pre-schoolers. On to specifics. The band did indeed learn a new show each week...even when we had back to back home games. In my four years with the band, we never repeated a show. I cannot speak for everyone on this board, but what I would like to see is: 1.A return to the great traditions the band once displayed. 2. more varied and appropriate music in the stands. 3. A more professional looking warm weather uniform. 4. Playing the alma mater at the beginning of the game rather than the end when it is normally chaos on the field and in the stands. 5. A better arrangement of the national anthem. 6. No more "Fly like an Eagle. And most importantly: 7. A return to the original Fight Song. So doyoupleedgreen, best wishes on your career . No matter if you aspire to being a professional musician or an educator, I hope you will be as proud to be an alumni of the band as I have been for the past (almost) forty years.
  10. I was not at the game nor have I seen the GB in a long time. I do know that the acoustics at Fouts will often dictate which bands sound louder, but louder is not always better. The GB director makes less than an experienced high school director. From all indications, he is a good man and well liked by his students, but I sure would like to see the band go in a different direction rather than be like almost all the other college bands.
  11. Their director should be fired. That is beyond comprehension.
  12. 22-24: 30 % 25+: 19 % This is a very interesting statistic. Almost 50% of our students are of non-traditional age. I would guess that many older students are not so interested in college athletics due to financial pressures, work, families, etc.
  13. For that kind of money, you can get two Generals!
  14. The last trooper I knew was Broderick Crawford in Highway Patrol.
  15. Best wishes to Todd Dodge as well as thanks for being such a gentleman about this. This has got to be a tough day for him.
  16. Yes, that always a problem: East North Carolina U = ECU. North South Carolina U = USC Upstate. Back to Central, their name used to be North Carolina College for Negroes and they wanted to keep the NCC portion, or so I understand.
  17. I hope you are being sarcastic! Central is about five miles from my home. They were playing D2 football until a few years ago. Their resources are very limited, plus they are virtually ignored by the local press with Duke, UNC, and NC State all in the same proximity.
  18. Agree, if it was going to happen, I would think the conversation took place on Sunday with the announcement made this morning. WKU better watch out!
  19. Goodness, it is difficult to believe that a student could complete his or her degree at North Texas without seeing a win. To me, this puts things into perspective more than any other statistic. We probably lost thousands of potential fans and supporters as these current students make their way to adulthood.
  20. I suspect that Butch Davis from UNC may also be looking for a job next season.
  21. Actually, he went on to be a NFL head coach albeit briefly.
