  1. On my sofa in Durham unless any other North Carolina domiciled fans want to get together.
  2. Here in the Triangle, I have seen billboards promoting the football programs of UNC, Duke, NC A&T, Elon, App State, and my favorite, ECU, which just says "aaaargh" with a picture of their Pirate mascot. I would hope we could afford this as well.
  3. Speaking of the WAC, the University of Nevada is in danger of loosing their marching band as well.
  4. This is what I like about the ACC and the old Missouri Vallley..a good mix of public and private colleges. One could also say that Denver is the token private school in the Sun Belt.
  5. I especially like our tradition of changing traditions: New fight song? Why not! Our logo is two years old already! I'll have a new one for you in the morning. How about a new shade of green? But, of course... I have an idea, let's change our nickname and confuse everyone! I thought you'd never ask!
  6. When this thread appeared several years ago, I recalled that an old Air Force buddy attended high school in Pekin, IL....home of the Pekin Chinks.
  7. Best to be beat by 70 points away at Georgia than 70 points at home against Tulsa.
  8. In today's Times, there is an article about students rejecting increased athletic fees. UNO was specifically discussed. We were portrayed as an example of an institution that supported increased fees. The article is here: www.nytimes.com/2009/05/30/sports/30colleges.html?_r=1&ref=todayspaper
  9. It does not take much to get us excited.
  10. Agree that UNTD should incorporate green. The Jaguar name, colors, and logo would be at home at any high school in the country. Why not call the new campus something unique to Dallas, like the UNTD Big Hairs, Consumers, Bible Belters, etc? Speaking of green, I recently had the privilege of visiting Denton for the first time in almost ten years. What a great job the school has done in maintaining an architectural continuity. This is hard to do and even Duke has become an eyesore as no two buildings look the same. The UNT campus has gone from an ugly duckling to something quite nice! But for a school that incorporates a color in its nickname, we have a long way to go. I saw hundreds of different shades of green! Even on the same sign there were often two different shades. While I'm at it, what's with the ads hanging from Fouts? We have managed to make it look even worse.
  11. "Years ago NT did have a President's home located where the Gateway Center sits now. I'm sure many of you remember it as the Alumni Center. NT hired Dr. Vandiver as President back in the 80's I think, and he decided to move off campus and NT started providing a housing allowance at that time." I believe the president's home was lost with Jitter Nolan. In the infamous 70's, he turned the home over to student gatherings and such. When I graduated in 1975, the house was still standing, but Nolan no longer lived there. As a comparison, I am an adjunct prof. at a small liberal arts college with a full time enrollment of less than 1000. The president makes 250K plus perks.
  12. Here's a great video of the composer of our fight song, Francis Stroup speaking about his life after graduation during the Great Depression. I hope I can still play the piano at 99! Shoot, I'd just be happy to be around at 89! http://www.nytimes.com/packages/html/natio...ex.html#/stroup
  13. As someone who has gone through the pain and expense of suing an architect, I have to say this looks like a great stadium. Fouts was run-down when I was a student there so I can only imagine what it must look like now.The grass end-zone is a nice touch. UVa has something similar at Scott Field and I would imagine other schools do as well. What are we going to call the new stadium..Trilli Field?
  14. Of course, I have to say UNC will win since my office is in Chapel Hill. If they win, be sure and tune into the postgame report to view a particular UNC custom. After significant victories, the UNC students set fire to cardboard boxes and then take turns jumping over them! All this under the watchful eye of the police and fire departments who probably wish they could jump over the boxes too! BTW, school spirit is always huge here. Even the town's fire trucks are painted Carolina blue.
  15. This entire thread is interesting and something I had no idea would stir a debate. Here is what I recall: 1. The orange seats were chosen merely because that was the fashion at that time. There was never any mention of Texas orange or Oklahoma State orange. Orange was "in" at that time...along with lime green leisure suits, gold chains, bell bottom pants, streaking, National Lampoon, Ruby Begonia's Cosmic a Go-Go on Hickory, and Harvey Wallbangers.. Basically, no one cared if the Super Pit seats were orange, purple, or chintz. It wasn't a blip on the radar. 2. Fry promoted the moniker Mean Green although officially we were the Eagles. I have a hat and coffee mug to prove it! 3. The Flying Worm was the best!
  16. Yes, they did indeed install burnt orange seats in The Super Pit. "Earth tones" were big in those days! Why in the world would you want to install green seats in a school that calls themselves the Mean Green? Actually, the orange seats may have been all right. We have gone through at least six shades of green since I was first a freshman in 1971 and I don't give the current shade of green, which may be the worse yet, much of a chance.
  17. Of course, UVa has a great deal of money for both academics and athletics. I recall reading somewhere that they had the second largest budget for athletics in the country, only after Oklahoma. My niece is a sophomore there (they do not call them, sophomores...instead they are called second year!) and she said much of the money was spent on non-revenue sports like fencing, lacrosse, crew, etc. Most students do not seem to mind as academics come first. As an aside, growing up in Virginia, I remember only men could attend UVa and had to wear ties to class. Even today, when you attend a game, you will see a great many students dressed up!
  18. We would have won two games! sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=3958292&campaign=rss&source=NCFHeadlines
  19. You can even get Shiner in North Carolina now which pleases me to no end. There is also a NC Bar-B-Q (pork with vinegar based sauce) restaurant in Durham that has it on tap! I just bought a six pack of Shiner Blonde. I wonder if Corker likes that too?
  20. He was really out there, always pushing the story of the day. Everyone knew who he was. Graham was a great asset to North Texas and will be missed.
  21. QUOTE(SilverEagle @ Feb 14 2009, 01:10 PM) * Although during the Maurice McAdow days, they would line up (company front style) at the north end zone and play a very impressive fanfare before entering the field. It was better pagentry than what we have now. Of course the GB of those days was about 125 members and they were very up-tempo (marching 8 to 5). Their uni's were very similar to the Ohio State Band's uni's. And like Ohio State, they wore spats. One of Mr. McAdow's favorite words and/or commands to the band was "FLOURISH, FLOURISH". I would like to see the fanfare that they used to play during those days brought back. I think it must have been written by a North Texas graduate for the Band, because in all the years I've gone to HS and College football games, I've never heard a fanfare like it." Yes, in those days, the band had a great tradition. The fanfare you mention was taken from a Wagner opera. I must be getting old as I find today's band about as exciting as watching a houseplant grow. It's not just North Texas, it's all those bands that march in that communist drum corps style. They learn two or three shows a season and do them over and over. With McAdow's band, a new show was presented at each home game, including back to backs. Just for spite, I think I will wear some spats tomorrow.
  22. This is good news. I thought someone named Cedar Hill had de-comitted to us.
  23. Watching ESPN this morning, I saw the news of Vizza's transfer made their "scroll". It also mentioned that he set a freshman record in the game against Navy.
  24. As the economics professor would say, we are at equilibrium. The state of North Texas football really hasn't changed much since I have been a fan for almost 40 years. We may have had our moments of fame, such as Fry's later years but we always return to the same spot. I suspect a change of conference would do little to change the situation either. Have New Mexico State and Idaho taken off after leaving the Sunbelt for the WAC? Why would we climb to the next level if we went to the WAC or C-USA? You can speculate all you want, but history will not be on your side. The argument about North Texas emphasizing liberal arts at the expense of athletics is invalid. We are comparing academic programs with an extracurricular activity. In fact, we should celebrate the fact that we have a few academic programs that bring us national attention. Without them, we would be just another "fourth tier" university like so many others. Having said all that, it makes little difference to me what conference we are in as long as it is I-A. If we are going to play football, we might as well make some attempt to do it right.
