For me, building a football team is no different than hiring a team at work. I want the best candidate. I don't care if they're freshmen or junior transfers. If they can help me win games, I want them on my team. Honestly, if a coach is shying away from high school kids because they think they'll transfer out, they're not the coach for me. I want a coach and administration doing everything in their power to keep athletes here once they've jumped on board whether they're freshmen or upper level transfers. Not only that, but I want them to be confident enough that they think they can keep them on campus once they've arrived that they're going out and getting the best athletes they can.

I can’t imagine our MGSF $’s or # of donors is much better though.

The truth is some really good things happened under RV and some not so good things happened under RV. I do believe he left North Texas Athletics better than he found it. His tenure was marked by significantly less resources than the administrations since him, so it's honestly hard to even compare. Was it time for UNT to move on from RV? Sure, but I'm also willing to give him credit for the improvements that happened during his time as AD.

A massive burden? They’ll be fine.

This is exactly my point. We have always walked into games like Memphis expecting to lose. We shouldn’t be expecting to lose to a team that was middle of the road in the AAC last year. Hell, we only lost by 10 to these jokers last year with a coach who got fired at the end of the year. I could not disagree more with this. I think it’s lazy marketing and doesn’t put much faith in our own team. I want this team to win the Homecoming game over an opponent that casual fans might know about. We need to not focus on what “every program does” and get creative to find what works for UNT. I want those casual fans to come back. Winning a game that we “should win” just doesn’t move the needle as much for fans coming back, in my opinion.

I love the idea of making Homecoming against an opponent people might actually care about and/or have actually heard about. This program has to start to capitalize on these opportunities if we want any sustained fan support. Homecoming is always a good crowd, and a win over Memphis will carry more weight than a win over Temple. We have to quit thinking so small and always wanting to schedule patsies we think we can beat for these types of games and schedule good programs and still expect to win.

I think it’s brilliant to have coaches from other schools at these camps. If a player thinks the camp is his way to get exposure to a coach from Tech, Ok State or Cal, they still walk through our facilities. Not every kid who wants to go to a Big 12 school is going to get an offer. And guess what… Our coaches got to show off our facilities and their coaching style to that kid. I’m not worried about transfers at a HS camp.

There’s nothing arbitrary about how the P5-G5 distinction has been used though (especially looking at the playoffs). You can pretend it’s arbitrary, but I’m not going to. I see the distinctions in the way it all plays out. This whole debate will go away soon enough because the SEC/Big 10 and potentially some variation of the schools left in the Big 12/PAC 12/ACC become some new division or league or “P3”.

But the idea behind it was the same. The “big time programs” were trying to keep the ship moving in their favor. They were tired of having “smaller programs” trying to get a piece of the pie. That’s the same idea behind the P5-G5 divide. You can change what it’s called, but something new will take its place. The SEC and Big 10 are already making moves for some kind of change. I’m not sure we exactly know what it’s going to look like when all is said and done, but it’s in the works.

Honestly, I think the fight against the P5-G5 distinction is a losing battle. If you break the P5-G5 naming convention, someone will come up with something new to distinguish the two groups.

What's biased about what he said? You agree that UTSA would go 5-7 in the SBC? I sure don't.

Is the UNT Foundation a separate entity from UNT? If so, I think they should manage NIL just like what A&M has been doing with the 12th Man Foundation managing the NIL program.

Of course they should end up in the HOF if they had a HOF worthy career in their time here. Tylor Perry comes to mind. As far as coaches- I don’t care what their college journey was if they can help win games and they’re not a terrible person.

Some of you are just splitting hairs analyzing AA’s stats. Much like how your GPA doesn’t matter beyond an internship or maybe a first job, his college stats don’t mean a dang thing anymore. Once you get a chance, it’s your turn to prove your worth. I’ll be pulling for him. He’s always seemed like a good ambassador for UNT.

ADs rarely have ALL the negotiating power in any issues with coaches. Wren now has that with Huggins.

I agree with this completely. With new coaches and new systems, some of these guys may be seeing the writing on the wall when it comes to their roles at UNT. My guess is some of them are reacting to what they're hearing and learning about from the new staff.

I mean, most pro athletes (many of them 20 year olds) make more than their coaches who have “climbed the corporate ladder.” I don’t think it’s that far fetched to envision a day where at least some college athletes make as much or more than their coaches.

None of this is surprising if you’ve been paying attention. Our annual giving is terrible from both a $’s perspective and a # of donors perspective.

Not that it really matters, but I don’t think that’s true.

If you donate to the scholarship fund, it goes to scholarships. If you donate to the other option, it’s the AD’s discretion.

UNT comes up with a day of giving that gives people a chance to come in at whatever level they feel comfortable coming in at and it meets hostility here? I just don't get it. This campaign is a good thing for the university. It's been done at other universities around the country too. Athletics even came up with some unique ways to bring in this year's accomplishments, honor Mean Joe, etc. All these things help people learn about this program and gives them an opportunity to dip their toes in the water. Once people are in, even at $9.40, they become new leads who the department can cultivate and hopefully bring on board at higher levels. That doesn't even mention they found some donors (AD, head coaches, anonymous) to commit to matching some of these gifts. $'s in are good for this program no matter how they come in.
