It was a crisp January day when Jordan Webb sat in front of a glowing computer screen writing the email that months later would send his life on a course he never thought would take place.

It was a simple letter. A job request, in effect. Webb's services were no longer requested at Kansas, the school where just three years earlier he thought he'd become a star. So he researched schools that might need him, a 6-1, 210-pound athlete with starting experience in the Big 12 conference and leadership to spare.

Colorado was one. Wisconsin another.

"North Texas," Webb said. "I talked to some I-AA schools. Rice, Tulane. There were a few more..."

CU bit early.
