Iowa's foes remain in the pink

Tribune wires

Published September 29, 2005

Soft pink hues were added to the visitors' locker room (right) at Iowa's Kinnick Stadium under former coach Hayden Fry in the late 1970s. Fry believed the color had a calming effect. As part of an $88 million remodeling job at the stadium, designers retained that color motif, splashing pink across the walls, carpet, showers, sinks, lockers--even the urinals. But last week an Iowa law school professor received death threats after criticizing the university for using pink paint. The professor, now joined by others across campus, says using pink demeans women and perpetuates negative stereotypes of women and homosexuality. Football coach Kirk Ferentz wanted nothing to do with the controversy. "I mean this with all due respect, but it's not really on my laundry list right now," he said.

Now, I wasnt a psychology major, but I was told that pink hue was a bad bedroom color if couples were trying to have a baby. Something about it taking the mood and drive out of a man. Hell some male prisons have the entire jail coveried in pink hue to calm convicts. So was Coach Fry being smart or was he just plan stupid? unsure.gif(Could a current or alumni Psychology major please tell me if this is ture.)

Also if Coach Fry did this at Iowa, did he do it here at UNT?

Other Hayden Fry fans who followed his career when he left NT for Iowa in December of 1978 may want to clarify this, but he first had the visitors dressing room painted pink the first time he faced Bo Schembeckler and the Michigan Wolverines at the Hawkeye's Kinnick Stadium.

Coach Bo was said to have thrown an old fashioned fit when he first took his Wolverine team into that pink locker room at Kinnick, too; so Fry's psychology in painting the visitor's locker room worked as planned. smile.gif

Our most special guest for next Tuesday nights nationally televised NT/Troy U at Fouts had a minor in Psychology from Baylor U. rolleyes.gif

You can't ban a color from somewhere because of its negative stereotypes. Should we ban any sports team with a fire or flames in their logo because that reminds people of hell? What about Tulane's Green Wave because people can find it offensive because of Katrina? They need to focus their time on real issues of feminism and gay rights if they want to promote their cause, and not focus on the visitor's locker rooms.

Do you think the Susan B. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation is offended by the pink locker rooms?
