  1. I understand the rules. My point is a student should be out of school in 4 years, not 5. Playing football is a invalid reason for taking 5 years to complete something that should take 4. So, if it was my son, I want him out of college in 4 years. If he redshirts for a year and graduates and moves on after 4 years, he leaves school with a year of eligibility in the bank (wasted). I have no idea what the statistics are, but it seems to me that there are a lot fewer student athletes that were redshirted their freshman year and actually make it all the way to be a 5th year "senior" than don't. Financially speaking how does it work? Are they now on scholarship for 5 years instead of 4? That's a 25% increase in cost to the AD and with the runaway costs of college these days, that 5th year is the most expensive. Now, winning a national championship with a roster full of 5th year seniors is probably a great investment, I'll grant that, but highly unlikely. For the student athlete, he's giving up a year of income he'll never get back (time value of money, getting that 401(K) started, etc.).
  2. Personally not a fan of the redshirt. Students are supposed to complete their college education in 4 years not 5 and there's no guarantee they will even be around four years (quit, injured, don't make the grades, hanging around Wal-Mart, etc.). We should make a commitment to the player and his parents to get him in and out of school in four years. The redshirt season is basically a wasted year of eligibility IMHO (Joey Byerly anyone?). If you got 'em, play 'em.
  3. I believe retention (how many incoming freshman come back after the first year) and four year graduation rates (we are at 26%) weigh heavily in the rating. Parents want to know that their kids have a good chance of graduating in 4 years. Both of these measures go directly to the students that are accepted and ultimately enroll in the university. They also see endowment is also important. Ours is pretty small for a university our size, but has gotten better in the last few years.
  4. No such thing as bad publicity, I guess... http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/weird-news/students-spot-very-rude-design-8402922#rlabs=1 rt$sitewide p$3
  5. I called the 940-565-2527 number. Of course this is only step one. They still have to fulfill my renewal.
  6. Thought I would add my experience to the thread. I called this morning and the phone was answered on the 2nd or 3rd ring. I renewed my four tickets and Mean Green Club donation and was off the phone in 5 minutes tops. I was having a flat fixed this morning to did it from the waiting room. I didn't have any of my information with me, but they were able to look it up quickly. Not trying to make excuses for those that had a bad experience, but for me anyway it was painless and quick. Customers are generally more likely to provide feedback or take a customer satisfaction survey when they have a bad experience so it gets weighted to the negative side. I felt it was important for me to add my feedback on the positive side.
  7. Translation (I think).... Is there anyone on the current walk-on list that could start or be a major contributor at the start of the season?
  8. Who picked the vendor? Who didn't ask to review the final product before it when out live to customers? What a cluster.
  9. I get it, so Jackson is saying that all we need to do now is refer to ourselves as THE University of North Texas. Easy peazy.
  10. There are a few of us up here. I'm in Connecticut. I was able to watch every game on TV last year except one (I have DirecTV). And if it wasn't on satellite, I could find a stream on the Internet. Looking forward to the Army game. I took a group of about 10 last time we played up here. Boston is a lot of fun. I was just up there a couple weeks ago.
  11. You mean "lay off" as in fire?
  12. For those of you who buy stuff at amazon.com, have you tried smile.amazon.com? It allows you to designate a charitable organization that will receive a small percentage of the purchase price. Perhaps Athletics can get on the list of organizations to donate to. They are not listed yet, so I've selected The University of North Texas Foundation as my organization. Every little bit helps, I guess. University Of North Texas Foundation Location: Denton, TX | Year Founded: 1972 Mission: We match donor's desires to support students, teachers, research and facilities by accepting all sorts of gifts and gift arrangements that ultimately create and expand permanent endowments and other funds. AmazonSmile is a simple and automatic way for you to support your favorite charitable organization every time you shop, at no cost to you. When you shop at smile.amazon.com, you’ll find the exact same low prices, vast selection and convenient shopping experience as Amazon.com, with the added bonus that Amazon will donate a portion of the purchase price to your favorite charitable organization. You can choose from nearly one million organizations to support.
  13. The problem with height and weight numbers is you never know what to believe. When I think of Fine coming out of high school, I'm reminded of another "undersized" QB that played for Boise State. In 2007, Boise State listed recruit Kellen Moore (also a Gatorade player of the year for the state of Washington) as 6'1'' and 185 lbs. In 2015, the Cowboys have him listed as 6'0" and 200 lbs. I doubt that he shrunk an inch and only put on 15 pounds in eight years. According to Kellen's mother he grew faster than his classmates but then stopped growing at 5'11'' when he was a sophomore in high school. Moral of the story...everyone fudges these numbers. The question is, are the number on Fine also fudged? We have him listed as 5'10" and 170. Does it matter? If he can play and put up numbers for us anywhere close to what Kellen Moore did for Boise State, who cares. In 4 years, Kellen led Boise State to a W-L record of 50-3 with the following stats: Year Cmp Att Pct Yards Y/A TD Int Long Rating 2008 281 405 69.4 3,486 8.6 25 10 80 157.1 2009 277 431 64.3 3,536 8.2 39 3 67 161.7 2010 273 383 71.3 3,845 10.0 36 6 83 182.6 2011 326 439 74.3 3,800 8.7 43 9 71 175.2 Not bad for an undersized QB coming out of high school.
  14. What if we, as a University, just say that we self-identify as a Tier 1 University? Would that work? I believe we need to tighten up our acceptance rate, but not for a specific acceptance rate number. The more important numbers, IMHO, are freshman retention % and 4-year graduation %. UNT suffers in these metrics because of our acceptance rate. Tighten that up and these other two will improve.
  15. Robert Ford was my next door neighbor when I lived in Coppell during the early 90s. We played golf a few times...once with Butch Davis. That was cool. One night, fairly late, Rich Dalrymple knocked on my door by mistake. He was looking for Robert's house. I haven't thought about those days in a long time. Glad to hear he's doing well.
  16. Speaking of helmets, what are those poor guys at The Helmet Project doing? With almost every team trotting out a new helmet every game, they must be some of the busiest people in college football.
  17. I don't recall anyone coming on here and initiating a thread to belittle DT's career. It is almost always in response to a Vito article where he just won't let it go. As fans (and with very few exceptions) we support all student athletes that put on the Mean Green uniform and give it their best for our Alma Mater. However, Vito's incessant and ad nauseam campaign to annoint DT for football sainthood has had the exact opposite effect. So much so that it has gotten to the point where he is actually doing Mr. Thompson a disservice.
  18. Yes, nothing like our very own government to obfuscate a simple definition. Maybe we should go back to man-made disaster. The generally accepted central tenet of terrorism or a terrorist attack is to advance a political cause, belief or pursuit. I think most people understand that. If you want to call what that wacko kid did domestic terrorism because your government told you that's what it was, then by all means have at it. I'm comfortable knowing that SHES was not a terrorist attack.
  19. ter·ror·ismˈterəˌrizəm/noun the use of violence and intimidation in the pursuit of political aims.
