  1. So what is it? Is this just an upgrade/renovation of the existing video boards where they currently are or is this the move/replace as part of the AC expansion? Whatever it is, it's beyond me why we wait and try to squeeze this type of work in a handful of weeks before the first home game (and apparently the same time the team is using the field to prepare for the season). Why not do this after the last home game last year and give yourself plenty of time to test everything and work out any/all bugs?
  2. News segment on recent QB commit. Also, all my friends are very aware of where I went to school and that I follow Mean Green sports. Durning sports season, I get asked who the Mean Green Machine play this week or did the Mean Green Machine win last night.
  3. Starting to see/hear references to Mean Green Machine, Mean Green Wrecking Machine or some variation along these lines in the media...either on sports news or broadcasts. We must defend our brand or we will lose it. Other media types or casual fans will pick up on this and before you long, that's how everyone will refer to us. We are the Mean Green. No additional verbiage allowed. This needs to be reiterated ad nauseam by our AD in media handouts, directives, communications, corrections, etc.
  4. Technically, you didn't graduate from North Texas either. We've been The University of North Texas (UNT) for over thirty years. That's a lot of graduates of UNT. Those of us that graduated from North Texas State University (NTSU), me included, or some other former derivative are a smaller and smaller proportion of former students. We are literally a dying breed. The diving eagle connected to UNT is a horrible logo and it deserves to die. I think it's the right move to emphasize UNT as it unambiguously refers to The University of North Texas. People can still say they went to North Texas and use in the fight song or cheers. It's not that big of a deal. We just need to stick with it and defend its use religiously everywhere. Now if we can just settle on a color of green.
  5. Is the grass mowed? Have we put out any fertilizer or fire ant killer? Have we gotten the parking situation figured out yet (after how many years)? Please, please, please, don't screw this up.
  6. UCF refuses to be called Central Florida. It's important to their sports brand and has served them fairly well I'd say. I've said it before, but I've never liked seeing N Texas, Nor Tex, North Tex or, worst, No Texas on the banners on the bottom of screens as the scores roll by. For some reason TV people always feel compelled to abbreviate North Texas.
  7. It's a good question and there are many ways to look at it, but we won't really know until the class develops and produces on the field over the next 2-3 seasons. A lot can happen between now and then and some of that will be completely out of the control of the coaching staff. Here's how I look at it. All things being equal, a player being recruited will generally go with the "best" conference or "best" school recruiting him. Yes, there are exceptions and they are called exceptions for a reason. It's just human nature to go with what you (or your family/fiends/coaches) think is the best opportunity. There's a hierarchy (real and perceived) of conferences and programs. If a player is offered by a MAC school and a B1G school, more often than not, they will go with the B1G school. Between the Sun Belt and the ACC, they will go with the ACC. Between CUSA and the AAC, they will go with the AAC. What I'm suggesting is that by being in a better conference (the best we have been in since returning from the 1-AA desert), our recruiting is naturally going to be better than it has been in the past. In fact it damn well better be better. That's almost a given and expected. The real question is it exceeding the expectations that simply come along with being in arguably the best conference outside of the "P5" conferences and how are we matching up against our conference mates. Only time will answer these questions.
  8. On a side note, it is amazing to me that all it takes is one good year to become the latest darling of conference re-alignment candidates....see Tulane as evidence of this phenomenon. Since joining the AAC in 2014 they are a combined 49-65 or .438. I haven't done the math, but I think they were even worse than that during their tenure in CUSA. In other words, they have been really bad since 1996. They go 12-2 last year and all of a sudden they are the next Alabama. It's a what have you done for me lately world for sure when it comes to college football.
  9. Only 2 of the 8 are from the AAC with SMU #2 and Tulane #5 and this is just according to an odds-maker who sees them raiding the MWC more than the AAC. Early in the article the same odds-maker indicated that the Pac-12 is hesitant to add SMU. Not sure if he has direct insight on that as that statement contradicts his ranking of SMU as the 2nd most-likely candidate.
  10. The divide only deepens when "G5" schools do the marketing for "P5" schools. We're self-regulating ourselves to a "lower" division.
  11. Answered my own question...seems pretty loosey goosey with only some "basic guidelines" and a someone who "brought credit" to the University and had a "special impact" on Mean Green Athletics. https://meangreensports.com/form/11 Established in 1981, the North Texas Athletics Hall of Fame acknowledges former student-athletes, coaches, and administrators whose accomplishments brought credit to the University of North Texas and had a special impact on Mean Green athletics. Any person may nominate an individual for consideration by the North Texas Hall of Fame Selection Committee. The following are basic guidelines for considering a nominee: The person should have made an outstanding contribution to North Texas athletics. The person should have an honorable and respectable image since leaving the University of North Texas. Candidates are not eligible for induction until at least five years after they left the University of North Texas. Stronger consideration will be given those student-athletes who graduated from the University of North Texas. Nominees are placed on the ballot by the North Texas Hall of Fame Selection Committee, which is made up of 10 individuals with strong ties to UNT (including multiple Hall of Fame members) and have been designated by the athletic department, including the president of the North Texas Letterwinners Association. The Selection Committee will place 10 names on the ballot each year, with no more than five nominees from any one sport. The final ballot will be distributed to the following voters: active, dues-paying members of the Letterwinners Association; HOF inductees and McCain Award recipients; and the Selection Committee. A maximum of six former athletes, coaches, and administrators may be inducted in a year (including the McCain Award honoree, if presented). No more than three individuals from any one sport may be selected in any year. Nominees are not selected for induction are automatically rolled onto the ballot the next year and the selection committee will fill the remaining ballot slots at their annual meeting. A nominee may remain on the ballot for five consecutive years and then must roll off for at least one year before reconsideration by the Selection Committee. No more than six individuals are inducted into the Hall of Fame each year. To nominate someone for consideration for the Hall of Fame, fill out the form below and click Submit Form. Or you can print out the completed form and mail it to: North Texas Athletics Department ATTN: Eric Capper 1155 Union Circle #311397 Denton, TX 76203
  12. To be honest, I have no idea how individuals get into the HOF. Are there eligibility requirements to even be considered? If so, what are they? For example, to be eligible is a student-athlete required to earn a degree from UNT and compete a minimum of three seasons or something? Who decides what individuals are inducted?
  13. Rough tournament for the lady golfers. It happens. On the bright side, it looks like Ellie Roth had a hole-in-one on a 391-yard par 4. Outstanding.
  14. I'd like to amend my season record prediction.... I know this is going on at every other school, but I don't really care about every other school. I'm sure it's just the green eye glasses, but seems like the exodus is hitting UNT hard this year. At this rate, we'll be counting heavily on true freshman and walk-ons for our first year in The American.
  15. Clue is a bit ambiguous (on purpose?). By played professionally, does this include all professional leagues (i.e. Canadian?) or just the NFL and did said play graduate from UNT or did they graduate from another school?
  16. A hypothetical for the group. If Tylor ends up at Texas Tech, will we cry tampering? I'll hang up and listen.
  17. We're always world-beaters before the season starts and optimism is usually at an all time high when we get the pads on. However, I think we are asking a lot of a new coaching staff, new system and new players at key positions. We'll be better in the second half of the season, but that's going to be the toughest stretch of our schedule. I'm between 3-9 and 4-8. Would love if we do better than that, but I think we will need a lot of breaks to fall our way to get to or above .500.
  18. I think we we need to remind ourselves every so often that, when is all said or done, for coaches, ADs, staff, etc., this is just a job or stop along their desired career path. Just like your job/career. There's nothing wrong with that. It's unusual for people to work at the same company their entire careers. With the new landscape of college sports it may be time to think about the athletes the same way. It's not bad. It's just the way it is. How many of you even knew who Tylor Perry was 3 years ago? There is a ton of talent out there. Let's go get it. In terms of timing, the old adage is you leave on a high note. The best time to move on is when you leave them with tears instead of cheers.
  19. Not the best day, but hang on to win The Bruzzy. Congrats! https://results.golfstat.com/public/leaderboards/gsnav.cfm?pg=team&tid=27107
  20. That's true in almost every situation when there is a public statement released.
  21. Congrats coach and thanks for what you've done for the program and the memories...well deserved. We'll probably never find out what went into the decision-making process, but it should would be interesting to find out. There's the money obviously and we've heard about the connection to Tech. After all that, it's about winning championships and legacy, I guess. Did he feel he's accomplished all he can at UNT...that the likely-hood of winning an NCAA national championship at Tech is far greater than at UNT? Was he disappointed in or beaten down by the lack of community and student support? Or maybe the timing was just right. He feels he's leaving the program in good hands and wanted to start his own coaching tree. BTW, how many branches do you need before you have your own tree in the coaching world?
  22. Just think how awesome it is to add The University of North Texas to the legacy of NIT champions. Just an incredible day for UNT athletics.
