  1. Bunting at UNC is already gone and Amato at NC State looks to be next according to the scuttlebut. UNC has put out feelers to Tulsa's coach who said "not interested". Perhaps they will contact DD next.
  2. I remember when some goofball "modified" the NTSU exit sign off of I 35 to Ave C to read "NUTS".
  3. There is an interesting article in the Raleigh paper today which speaks to the demise of the ACC in terms of sportsmanship. Miami is indeed Miami, but look at Va Tech as another example of college football gone wrong. By one estimate, which I have neither the time or resources to verify, 25% of the current football players at UNC have had some sort of major problem with the law. Virginia, Duke, and similar schools all used to have a tradition of scholarship among its athletes. All that is gone now as the bar is lowered and thugs (aka student-athletes) are allowed to play college football. What is really ironic is the commercial the ACC shows on their game of the week which is broadcast locally. It shows all the ACC coaches, speaking as one, about all the things ACC football stands for: good sportsmanship, respect, honor, etc. etc. While the fight was poor for both schools, at least FIU and the Sun Belt are getting some favorable press about how they are handling this.
  4. "WE NEED ALL OF THAT MONEY TO ALLOW OURSELVES TO BE KNOWN AS A ARTS AND MUSIC SCHOOL." I'm afraid you do not know of which you are speaking and am frankly getting tired of hearing that the reason that athletics do not get a chance here is because "that our money" goes to the arts. You are comparing an academic department with athletics. Why not go after those thugs in the philosophy department? Who needs to study Hegel and Kant? If we shut down that department, maybe we use the money to start a field hockey team? The debate team...who needs it? We can publish the "NT Daily" once a week. Let's call it the "Campus Chat" and give that money to the swimming team. Athletics are an important part of developing a whole person, just as reading the great books are and being able to tell the difference between a oboe and bassoon. I also agree that athletics are the window of most universities, like it or not. I can assure you the College of Music works very hard to raise money. I have given enough money to NT to receive Christmas cards from the Board of Regents, but until I took the initiative, never received any solicitations from the Athletic Department. There are plenty of "artsy-fartsy" people on this board that support athletics (35 years for me), but until you can provide some proof (goodness, we could have learned how to perform a "proof" if we had just kept that pesky philosophy department), I cannot accept your statement.
  5. Yes, they say any publicity is better than no publicity. Our win was featured in the Raleigh paper as well.
  6. You think "dressing for dinner" means shoes AND socks.
  7. Best wishes for your new venture. Anyone who has ever owned their own business can tell you how rewarding it can be. "We would also make every attempt to hire only North Texas alumni and current North Texas students, but I'll have to check on the legality of such hiring practices." You would have to claim what is called Bona Fide Occupational Qualification (BFOQ). In other words, you will have to prove that only NT people are qualified to work in your restaurant, which would be exteremly difficult. Even Hooters could not prove BFOQ with their previous policy of only hiring women with two major assets...now they have "Hooter's People in addition to the Hooter's Girls. I recall when the McDonald's near Ave C opened, it was painted lime green and decorated with pictures of NT sports. Great! Good luck!
  8. I should have added to be sure and click on the others, especially when they have Amato as Napolean Dynamite.
  9. Here in NC, all the big schools are having trouble: NC, NC State, and of course Duke who has had trouble since I can remember. I suspect there may be some coaching changes coming quickly. Amato is a great source of amusement here. Click below for something hilarious from the Raleigh paper: http://www.newsobserver.com/1235/story/481010.html
  10. Yes, it could be worse, but not by much. I was in a quick-stop store in Durham following our game and the owner had the end of the UNC -Rutgers game on. The guys in the store were all upset about UNC loosing to Rutgers. I said, "if you think that's bad, my team lost by 49 points." The owner turned around and asked, "where did you go to school, Duke?."
  11. Sorry, I meant to say Carswell. Yes, that base is the only one, but as a reserve base, has just a small percentage of the population of major active duty bases. There are about 3000 active duty personnel there. I would have no idea about the number of reservists. For example, many army installations have 30K.
  12. There's only one problem: there are no major military installations nearby. Sheppard in Wichita Falls would be the closest since Bergstrom closed as an active duty base. Nice thing to do, however.
  13. 51.......2002 Prius 28.6....2005 Mini Cooper "S" convertible. (This is the gas guzzler in the family) Painted "Mean Green" of course.
  14. "Fight Song" and "Glory to the Green" are two songs that NT prides itself on, especially since both were written by NT students in 1922 and 1939. Well, that's not entirely correct. The original fight song was written pre war. The fight song that is used now was written in 1976 after Maurice McADow retired. Winslow wanted to "modernize" the original and arranged the present version. The current version is a "dumbing down" of the original and is frankly, a pretty poor subsitute and should be no source of pride, especially for a school with a great music program. I have the original on vinyl and if I get some spare time, will try to copy it so this board can hear what the fight song used to sound like. Of course, where else but Noth Texas can someone decide to change things like the fight song and school colors at whim?
  15. Sorry, I should have said "great" or added one of these:
  16. Calling wins over teams like Louisville and Cincinnati “signature” wins is what is disturbing about articles like this. Even in the Rod Rust era, we would beat these teams regularly. I remember the great Lee Corso complaining about how he (Louisville) found it difficult to beat North Texas, even when we were bad.
  17. Regarding the on-line definition of alumni: "A male graduate or former student of a school, college, or university." I stand corrected...my Webster's (the old fashioned paper kind) does not include former student. Now, I have to question the inclusion of women in this list. How many know that the Provost of SMU is a two time UNT grad?
  18. The "alumni" list has always dissapointed me. First, we need to check the definition of alumni, which most would agree whould apply to those who actually received a degree from the university. Former students would be a more appropriate designation and we are stretching the truth by calling them alumni. Only about four of the famous music "alumni" actually graduated. Also, other than the two singers from the Met, none of our classical musicians are listed and you will find UNT alumni holding positions in major symphony's and opera countries around the country. Do we not have any famous alumni in the field of education? The former Dean of the Yale School of Music is from UNT. I am sure there are more like him.
  19. I agree. Here in the "Triangle" of Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill, you find fans that have painted their homes in Duke blue, NC State red, and even Carolina blue. Judging from the looks of these homes, I would suspect that the people living in them did not get their MBA at Duke. When I first moved here, people whould demand to know what was my favorite team. I would always reply "North Texas" which seemed to scare them away!
  20. What is a "mid-major" anyway? If the Bowl Series teams are the "high-majors", there must be some "low-majors" to justify a "mid" category. Who are they?
  21. As most every public college in North Carolina is part of the UNC system except for NC State, I suspect she would have trouble naming all of the schools for which she is responsible! The only time I have seen her name in the news here is when she ws sent to clean up the mess at the NC School of the Arts. There was nothing in today's local papers about this, but I'll have a look tomorrow and let you know.
  22. Here is another "start-up" of which we are light years ahead: Boise State. Were they a junior college not too long ago?
  23. Thanks, Grey Eagle. To clarify, my desire to see ODU back in the Sun Belt was indeed tounge-in-cheek. Presently, the closest game for me is Middle Tenn, a short 12 hour drive from Durham. Norfolk is a whole lot closer. Plus, I have some property on the beach which would make for a nice pre-game party!
  24. As Norfolk is my hometown, I have been watching this for years and as the article says, it was no suprise. Foreman Field is actually a better facility than Fouts and with some renovation, will be very nice. As an aside, none of the Norfolk high school's have stadiums with one exception, so Foreman Field was home for everyone. ODU has around 20,000 students and although many would bristle at this, it is primarily a commuter school for students in the Norfolk-Va. Beach area. I will be shocked if they do not succeed at football. The people running ODU are very capable and Norfolk is the largest metropolitan area in the country without a major league team of any kind. The people there are starved for sports. Old Dominion will play in the 1-AA Colonial Athletic Conference when that conference begins football, but remember that Old Dominion was once part of the Sun Belt. Their return to the Sun Belt would increase my opportunities to see North Texas play tremendously, so I say let them back in now!
