  1. Well, I can tell you that in 1974, they were most certainly were not co-ed or else I need to re-examine some things. The Mean Green Dollies were formed in 1974, after Maurice McAdow stepped down as director of the marching band (that is what is was called..not the Green Brigade). The Dollies were a dance team and would do a little routine at each half time show. They were dressed in revealing (for that era) lime green outfits and would do their dance to "Hello Dolly". The 2000 fans in the stands would then applaud loudly.
  2. I hope you had an opportunity to see this in print: a two page above the fold article is nothing but good news for our school. I don't see similar articles about Middle Tennessee, Texas Tech, etc, etc. This is not the first time the "Times" has written about Fry Street and the music scene in Denton. They did a similar article, but not as large or comprehensive, at least 15 years ago. One of the great things about UNT is its music school and the unique Denton atmosphere. It was there in the 70's and it looks to be even greater now.
  3. C.C. "Jitter" Nolan...now there's a name from the past. Perhaps the only president in our history without an earned doctorate. North Texas used to provide a lovely mansion for its president's residence. "Jitter" promptly moved out and turned it over to the school. Does anyone remember when it was torn down?
  4. Here's a snippet from the ESPN article about the meeting: "Of course not, but that's the hypocrisy of the BCS logic. It clings to this silly idea that the regular season would be in peril if a Final Four-type playoff were instituted, even if that regular season includes such memorable 2007 cupcake matchups as North Texas at Oklahoma (79-10), Western Carolina at Georgia (45-16), William & Mary at Virginia Tech (44-3) and Northwestern State at Texas Tech (75-7). So let's quit with the regular-season-is-sacred propaganda." It's not so encouraging to see us as listed as "cupcakes" along with the 1AA schools.
  5. I'm afraid you are all mistaken on this matter. Al Gore founded the Pit Crew.
  6. I suspect hell would freeze over first before "Happy Appy" (as it used to be called here) would get into the ACC. There is much more to the ACC than football (i.e.basketball and high academic standards for the general students, not the "student-athletes"). Each of the ACC schools are major universities in many aspects. App State does not fit that mold.
  7. Very true. Plus there is Wake Forest just down the road in Winston-Salem. Except for Duke, there is no problem filling any of these stadiums on any given Saturday. I'll also add there are the NHL Carolina Hurricanes in Raleigh that are a big deal here. They share an arena with NC State and the colors of both teams are the same shade of red. Pretty clever!
  8. Last week, there was an article in the New York Times about SLC and specifically their former quarterback who has done such a great job in Missouri. I enjoyed the comment from the SLC coach who said if their graduating students do not attend big schools like those from the Big 12 and such, it is a disappointment. If that is true, how must they feel about playing for North Texas when they graduate? Which brings me to this season. I feel like an outsider when posting about the current state of our football program. I would not know Todd Dodge if I walked past him on the street, have never played football, etc. etc. But I am a long time North Texas supporter (35 years) and also support the school with my wallet. When Dodge was announced as head coach, there was an euphoria never before seen on this board. There were a few that said we could go undefeated, many that predicted winning seasons, but most predicted a building year with a number of victories. But no one predicted the worse season in recent history. We lost to Oklahoma by the second largest margin in our history, resided in the Bottom 10 for most of our season and provided the only victory to SMU and FIU. Clearly, this was worse than a rebuilding year. In spite of our season, the respect shown to Dodge by the majority of this board has been noteworthy and I doubt that if you see this on any other D-1 fan board. In fact, we have vented our angst towards an assistant coach, not the man in charge. This too, is unique. Other than the season, (other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how did you like the play?), my complaint with Dodge was how he apparently spoke about the quality of our players to the ESPN commentators prior to the game with La Monroe. For those who watched that game, towards the end of the broadcast, those commentators thanked Dodge for his "candid" appraisal about our team. If correct, this was certainly not appropriate and something I have never heard before by a head coach. http://www.nytimes.com/2007/12/01/sports/n...uggXY3iCf%20Uwg
  9. I was at the "first" Texas Stadium game, but we did not actually open the stadium. There was an earlier game by two historically black schools. I don't remember who they were, but because it was not major college football, no one counted the game and our game with Louisville was billed as the first. By the way, if some of you recent fans think Fouts looks empty with 15,000 fans, put 10,000 or less fans in Texas Stadium and you would really see empty. The move to Texas Stadium was not good for the students. Instead of walking to the game, it became a special effort, having to take buses and such. We lost what little student support we had. By the way, no matter how bad North Texas was, we almost always whipped Corso's Louisville teams!
  10. This whole matter of a "grenade" is entirely tasteless, especially when we have young men and women of the same age of the players being killed everyday in Iraq by roadside bombs.
  11. They should have gotten the Air Force to do this. Early and off target...typical of the squids! Signed, Letsgiveacheer, USAF, Retired
  12. The Naval Academy does indeed have a band and it is made of enlisted personnel. They play at formations and similar functions. The Academy Drum and Bugle Corps is made of midshipmen and they are the ones playing at the games. Good thing they are not bringing their band as our tax dollars would be paying for this!
  13. The band has been stopping at Mr. McAdow's home for many years and it is indeed a very nice thing to do. Unfortunately, a family emergency kept me from traveling to Denton for the band reunion and game. As I was planning to take Mrs McAdow to lunch on Friday, I called to cancel and had a nice conversation. She is 84, lives by herself and still drives. Their son Scott, is a very successful director at Spring Lake...sort of the Todd Dodge for bands as he has won the state honor band competition several times. One other addition to the posting: most football fans knew Mr. McAdow as the marching band director, but he was the Director of Bands and also conducted the top concert band. Not only did he send out many high school band directors, but also college band directors (Arkansas for one), professors, and principal players in symphonies around the country (San Fransisco and Chicago, to name a few).
  14. Yes, It's a very nice facility and fits well with Wake Forest's image and reputation. Interesting notes about their desire to build more premium club level seats. Personally, on the several occasions that I have watched a game from the club level, I have felt out of the game experience. The free booze and "all you can eat" food are all great, but do not compensate for being in an enclosure while everyone else is having a great time in the stands. One thing we can never do in Texas is duplicate the great fall climate we (usually) have in this part of the country for watching an afternoon of football. There is something about a chill in the air and the turning of the leaves that makes football even more enjoyable.
  15. This is one of the few topics to which I can contribute...I don't know if that is good or bad! When I arrived on campus in 1971, there was still quite a bit of talk about the Ramsey era and the late sixties. I recall hearing that a North Texas game was even on TV which at that time, was quite a feat, seeing there were only the three networks. Fry was just getting cranked up when I graduated in 1975, but I did get to see us beat a nationally ranked San Diego St team at Fouts, (in front of 300 paying fans!!). Someone can add or correct this, but we were nationally ranked sometime in the late 70's ourselves, so I would submit whatever year that was, would have to be considered one of the greatest teams ever.
  16. I was wondering when this would happen. Here in Chapel Hill, I can assure you that the new UNC coach, Butch Davis, is not getting a free pass. At the college level, I hate to see such pointed criticism about individual players such as what has happened with Meager, but we have mainly been silent about Dodge until now. So far, we have seen the second worse defeat in our long history and the loss of two games in the final quarter. An appearance in the ESPN Bottom Ten is surely coming and I can't recall us ever being there. Will things improve? I suspect so, but if they don't, I will still be here and rooting for our team just as I have since 1971.
  17. Here's something novel after each touchdown: 1. Learn the words... 2. Stand-up, and... 3. Sing the fight song
  18. 1972, Tulsa vs. North Texas State: a MVC classic at Skelly Field.
  19. There are probably more of us here than you would think. I live in Durham and work in Chapel Hill. NC Green is here also; Fayetteville I believe. Several years ago, I wrote the Exes about helping organize a NC chapter, but did not receive the courtesy of a reply. While this was many years ago, I recall when North Texas played University of Richmond in Richmond, there were at least two or three hundred North Texas fans at the game. While I can't get to Denton as I would like, I will drive to the MT game as that is about the closest game to us. I also recall a rumor about a possible UVa and North Texas game in the works.
  20. ... you buy a green Mini Cooper 30+ years after graduating.
  21. Thank you for posting this and I am looking forward to returning to campus for the first time since Mr. McAdow's funeral. A few things, when I was contacted about this several months ago, I understood this to be a reunion for band members from 1945 to 75 (the years of Mr McAdow's tenure at North Texas) but according to your posting and the postcard, I see it is a reunion for all band members. Which is correct? We were not the Green Brigade then, in fact we were just the "marching band", but those were simpler times.
  22. Last night, I stopped at the Chapel Hill Whole Foods to purchase some groceries on my way home from work. Outside the Whole Foods, there is a hawker who sells ant-Duke memorabilia such as photos of scoreboards showing UNC victories over Duke, etc. Last night, as I passed by, he yelled, "Know any Duke fans? " I replied, "No, I don't care and I went to school at North Texas." He said, "Go Longhorns!" I said, "Not Texas...North Texas!" He replied, "North Texas State....Go Mean Green!" I almost bought one of his miserable scoreboards.
  23. "I think maybe you're trying to make excuses for our ability to recruit international players (something UNT struggles to do) and our ability to produce a national title winner (something UNT has never accomplished in any sport at the Division 1 level" One correction, North Texas won four straight national championships in golf.
