Seems like we are leaving sort of a golden era of UNT basketball into the unknown. McCasland and many of his great players like Tylor, Javion, Mo, Geu, Kai, Drez, Bell, Reese, Ryan, Rosy, Mike, DJ and Jorden are gone now. We have no guarantee that this roster will stay as is. And half of the squad was basically sitting the bench and they deserve a shot to go play somewhere else if they cannot get minutes here. Ross is a good coach but can he recruit to the level that McCasland did? Will we stay primarily a defensive team or will we look to move more uptempo?

I respectfully must challenge your statement. The announcers clearly had personal relationships with the LSU staff and they stated several times during the broadcast that the squad wanted to be there.

Yes me too. And what is funny is we have a very good film department that should be able to do better.

Sad for Perry, he could have done better with us had he stayed here. Tough loss for his team tonight against Iowa.

Austin, currently an assistant coach at Alabama, had great success in five years as the head coach at Nicholls, including 90 wins and a pair of Southland Conference Championships. Austin’s hometown is Houston and we are so excited to welcome him back home to the Lone Star State. Austin has high energy, a relentless work ethic and a strong basketball IQ. Austin is completely aligned with my vision and our values as a department and as an institution. He will be a terrific leader of our student-athletes. Why would we not want a full stadium? I do agree that they could beat us like Cal did which would not be helpful.

DENTON, Texas – The UNT women’s basketball team received a berth into the inaugural Women’s Basketball Invitation Tournament and will continue its historical season beginning Thursday, March 21 against TCU in Fort Worth. It is the sixth postseason appearance in program history and first in the WBIT. “This is an incredible opportunity for our university and our women’s basketball program to be one of the first 32 teams to play in the brand new WBIT,” head coach Jason Burton said. “It’s a huge accomplishment for this program. I’m incredibly proud of everything these young women have done and for them to be rewarded for their hard work this year.”” North Texas went 23-8 this season and 13-5 in American Athletic Conference play, earning its first conference title since 1986 with a share of the AAC regular season championship. UNT has set 11 school records so far this season, including single-season wins, regular season wins and total team points. The Mean Green will meet TCU for the 24th time in series history in the first round of the tournament and first since 2003. A game time is still to be announced. “We get an opportunity to go back to Fort Worth where we didn’t have our best performance and go up against a good TCU team,” Burton said. “We are excited that we get to play, and it should be a great atmosphere. We look forward to the challenge and the opportunity to play in the postseason.” The Mean Green are one of 32 teams in the WBIT that also features Tulsa who earned an automatic berth into the event. The first three rounds will be played at host sites of the higher seeded teams, while semifinal and final games will be held at Butler University’s historic Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis on April 1 and 3. DENTON – The UNT men’s basketball team lost 80-76 at home to (RV) Florida Atlantic Wednesday night. The game saw eight lead changes and four ties but North Texas (16-13, 9-8) was unable to get the stops late to capture the final lead. The Mean Green were led in scoring by Jason Edwards who poured in a game-high 32 points. It’s his fifth 30-point game of the year, which ties for the program record for most in a single season. The Owls (23-7, 13-4) were led in scoring by preseason American Player of the Year Johnell Davis who scored 29 points. It’s the most points an opponent has scored on the Mean Green this year. “Got to give coach May and FAU a ton of credit,” said North Texas head coach Ross Hodge. “They came into this season with a ton of expectations, and they’ve stayed together and executed at a high level. On our end I was disappointed with our defense. If you had told me we would score 76 on our home court I’d guess we win every time.” The 80 points UNT conceded on Wednesday was the most points the Mean Green have given up all year. Next up for North Texas is a road trip to Rice on Saturday. It will close out the regular season for the Mean Green before the 2024 American Athletic Conference Championship in Fort Worth. It does not appear that we have done much to change the ratings to me. I see us winning 4-5 game next year with this defense. And we still have not landed one portal defensive lineman.

Basically as I read it there are no enforceable rules pertaining to NIL. This allows whomever has the most money a huge advantage over the rest of us. Sad. They are trying to kill the sport.

I worry that we will draw Memphios and they seem to be finding themselves. This conference is a murderers row.

DENTON – The UNT men’s basketball team won its second straight game with an 84-69 home win over East Carolina on Sunday at the Super Pit. The Mean Green (16-12, 9-7) honored senior Rubin Jones prior to tip-off on Sunday for becoming the program’s all-time winningest player earlier this season. Against the Pirates (14-15, 7-9), Jones led North Texas to its second straight 80-plus scoring performance and win as he poured in a game-high 18 points and dished out a game-high six assists. This is the first time since 2012 the Mean Green have scored 80 or more in consecutive conference games. “We have a ton of respect for (ECU) coach Michael Schwartz and his staff,” said North Texas head coach Ross Hodge. “So, for us it started there with respect. I thought our guys played well, especially offensively sharing the ball. We crashed the glass well and played unselfish basketball and were tied into winning. I can’t put into words what Rubin (Jones) means to this program and means to me personally. To know his heart and how much he’s about winning and to be honored before the game as the all-time winningest player and play like he did and has been, I’m really happy for him and his family,” Hodge added. Jones, who missed 11 of the first 13 conference games due to a hamstring injury has averaged 17 points and six assists per game over his team’s last two. On Sunday he was one of five Mean Green players to score in double figures. Jason Edwards and John Buggs III combined for 33 points versus East Carolina and hit eight of their team’s 13 total 3-pointers. The duo sparked a second half run that saw UNT’s lead grow from 10 points to 20 and more. Also scoring in double figures was forward Robert Allen who scored a season-high 16 points and grabbed a team-high seven rebounds. CJ Noland was the fifth Mean Green player in double figures as he scored 11 points. It’s the fifth straight game Noland has scored in double figures. North Texas remains home as they host (RV) Florida Atlantic on Wednesday at 7 p.m. CT at the Super Pit. The Owls reached the Final Four of the 2023 NCAA Tournament. HOUSTON – The UNT women’s basketball team collected it’s 22nd win of the season marking the most wins in a single season in program history by taking down Rice, 63-54, Saturday afternoon at Tudor Fieldhouse. Tina Slinker’s 2001-02 team previously held the milestone with 21 wins, including the postseason. This year’s team surpassed the mark with one game to play in the regular season. DesiRay Kernal recorded her fifth consecutive double double with 22 points and 10 rebounds in the win. Her 3-pointer with 3:40 left in the fourth quarter gave the Mean Green the final lead of the game that they would not relinquish. Entering the game, Rice was 14-2 when leading with five minutes left. At that point, Rice led 50-48, but shortly after UNT would go on a 17-4 run that included Kernal’s 3-pointer that closed out the Owls. UNT shot the ball well the entire game but hit a different level of efficiency in the final 10 minutes of action converting 72.7% of its shots. Sixteen UNT turnovers in the first three quarters played a large role in allowing Rice to build a lead. The Owls had 14 points off turnovers and grabbed 21 offensive rebounds leading to 16 second-chance points. Suffy Ngulefac led the Owls with 13 points, tripling her season average of 4.4 points per game. Tommisha Lampkin reached double digits despite getting into foul trouble early. Jaylen Mallard and Aniyah Johnson played important minutes off the bench in place of Lampkin. Mallard played 18 minutes and recorded two points and two rebounds, while Johnson tallied six points and a pair of boards in 16 minutes. UNT’s win keeps it in the running for a regular season conference title with Tulsa and Temple. The Mean Green are 12-5 in conference play, which ties the most conference wins in a season in program history. With the victory, UNT also secured a double bye at the American Athletic Conference championship tournament. North Texas will wrap up the regular season Tuesday night in Denton when it hosts Memphis. The Mean Green will host Senior Day ceremonies prior to Tuesday’s 6:30 p.m. tip. Quoting Head Coach Jason Burton On the fourth quarter run: “When you look at it, they shot 27 more shots than we did, we shot 50% from the free throw line and they outrebounded us. We had to have an incredible stretch to win this game and we dominated the game in the last five minutes. We showed grit and stayed locked in.”

There have been discussions on here that if a player transfers out prior to graduation for NIL money or whatnot, they should not be eligible for HOF induction. Not sure if I would agree with this or not but it is an interesting take.

North Texas heads into Saturday’s game with an overall four-game winning streak versus the Roadrunners and having won five in a row at home versus them. UNT has won 10 of its last 12 versus UTSA, both of those loses were in San Antonio. During its four-game winning streak over the Roadrunners, UNT has won by an average margin of 16 points. However, in their most recent matchup, last season on Jan. 26, 2023, the Mean Green never led by more than nine points and needed a late run and a defensive stand to hold off UTSA as they won 63-59 at the Super Pit. Saturday’s game will be a 50th anniversary celebration of the Super Pit, which opened in 1973. UNT men’s basketball alums will be in attendance and are encouraged to come. Prior to tip-off on Saturday, there will be a pregame tailgate that starts at 1 p.m. CT outside of gate A of the Super Pit.
