  1. #13 Ole Miss is in some trouble. Their defense is getting picked apart. 30-14 Memphis
  2. So you,re saying we must rely on our ace in the hole........... The Pure Dumb Luck Theory.
  3. I have a second theory that may apply. The Blind Hog Theory: It states that even a blind hog eventually finds an acorn. In our case the Blind Hog Theory and the Overdue Theory are both in play.
  4. Don't worry. At first you'll get blisters, but later you'll get calluses.
  5. It's now 2015. Dickey is now OC/AHC at Memphis who went 10-3 last year, won their bowl, and ended ranked in both the final AP & the Coaches Poll. They are now 5-0, ranked, and scoring 48 points per game. After winning 4 straight championships and being named Sunbelt coach of the year for 4 straight years he had 2 losing seasons (while having some serious health issues as I recall), and he is still being debated on this forum, Wow. That horse is deceased. Take the saddle off of it, throw some dirt on it, and move on.
  6. I have a feeling that this thing gets turned around in a big way. Two or three years down the road the loss to Portland State may be seen as our moment of clarity. Call it karma. but we are due.
  7. Yes....but.......only if Canales wins some games and you can't find the guy you want. In that scenario he might turn out to be the guy you want after one full season. Portland crushed us with a one year interum hire. Who knows, Canales might be our Bruce Barnum.
  8. 5 thoughts about tonight 1. This team is auditioning for the next coach and whoever he is, I bet he's watching our games. 2. This team has talent at the skill positions that was not seen in the first 5 games. 3. The defense needs a total overhaul. 4. This team has enough talent be pretty good next year if the defense can be fixed. 5. Can a HC be in place with enough time to recruit the players he needs?
  9. Now there's a thought. Theron Fouts also had winning records as head basketball coach and baseball coach. We could solve 3 problems at once. He might not accept since we're demolished his stadium. However, if Justin Bieber were our head coach, the opening game would be a sure sell out. Since he never went to college, he should have 4 years of eligability left.............QB? HE COULD BE OUR FIRST PLAYER/COACH! Sorry, I kinda went off on a tangent.
  10. How would you like to play or coach for Bruce Barnum? Check it out as it's a great read. http://www.campusrush.com/portland-state-barny-ball-missouri-1403907396.html
  11. I haven't got a clue. Turn Canales loose and we may score more points.......but can our defense slow them down.....even a little?
  12. Really? Dodge in his best year he went 2-10. He was scoring an average of 17 pts a game and was 1-6 when he was fired. Canales averaged 34 pts a game over the last five games that year and went 2-3. Dickey went 3-9 his last year beating smu 24-6. We went 9-4 beating Baylor 52 -14 in 2003 I think his best year was 2002 when we went 8-5 with a bowl win. He opened the season with 4 of the first 5 games on the road at Texas, Alabama, TCU, and Arizona. The most points given up in a game that year was 33 at Alabama. He's now OC at 5-0 Memphis and averaging 48 points per game. Would he even be interested in coming back. No way in hell. He's happy where he's at.
  13. Willie Fritz has a great track record. Georgia Southern won the sunbelt 8 - 0 last year. They were the first team in NCAA history to go undefeated in FBS conference play while transitioning from FCS. They went 9 - 3 with a 24 - 23 loss at NC St, & a 42 - 38 at Georgia Tech. They are 4 - 1 this season. Chris Thomsen is young at 45, has a great track record, and has a Bowl win under his belt. He was TT interim HC for the 2012 Meineke Bowl win over Minnesota.
  14. IN 1997 TCU was 1 - 10 in the WAC. ......... The WAC. They hire a HC who had been HC at Southwestern, Pittsburg State, Southwest Texas State. and New Mexico. Franchione had 15 years of HC experience. He went 25 - 10 before he left TCU for Alabama. Gary Patterson had been LB coach at Tennessee Tech where Fran was OC. He was hired by Fran as LB coach at Pittsburg State. He was then hired by Fran as DC at New Mexico and then again at TCU. He was promoted to head coach by TCU. Does it sound similar to Boise? In 1996 Boise was 1 - 9 in the Big West Conference. Boise and TCU laid out a blueprint on how to turn it around. They hired HCs with success at smaller schools and later they promoted from within.
  15. He would be a very Boise State type hire. He has been a successful HC from a smaller school with local roots. He has shown he can recruit good Texas players to a small school. That's not an easy thing to do. He is now an assistant head coach at a big school. (Arizona State) He also was TT interim HC when they beat Minnesota in a 2012 bowl game. He is still early in his career at 44 or 45.
  16. Look at Boise. They will hire coaches from non FBS schools. Allen was HC at Portland St. Nutt was HC at Murray ST. Hawkins was HC at Williamette. Petersen was QB coach at Portland St and receivers coach at Oregon. He was hired as as OC at Boise and "groomed" for a few years. Harsin was HC at Arkansas St for 1 year. He had been Boise's OC when they had 2 undefeated seasons and was 61 - 5 as their OC. Boise became Boise by hiring good HC coaches from smaller schools. (with the exception fo Petersen) Look, how hard is it to recruit at Florida, OU, Alabama, etc. It may be misleading to think a coach from one of those schools is a great recruiter when the school is so easy to recruit to. A coach who has been successful as a HC at a school with limited resources, recruits well, spots talent that others overlooked, & has had success as HC. A non HC from a big school that is so easy to recruit to may be in way over his head here. Just my opinion.
  17. Gene Bleymaier from 1982 - 2011. Was fired and is now AD at San Jose State. Mark Coyle from 2012 - 2015. Was deputy AD at Kentucky. He was hired by Syracuse to fix their mess. Curt Apsey 2015. Was AD at Carroll College 2014-2015. Spent 16 years at Boise as associate AD.
  18. Boise HCs. 1993 - 1996 Pokey Allen was hired from Portland St. where he was 63 - 26. 1997 Houston Nutt was Murray St. HC where he went 11 - 1 and 11 - 2 his last 2 seasons. 1998 - 2000 Dirk Koetter was an assistant coach at Oregon. 2001 - 2005 Dan Hawkins former Williamette HC where he was 40 - 11 - 1. Boise hired him as assistant coach then promoted him to HC. 2006 - 20013 Chris Pettersen was a QB coach at Portland St. then receivers coach at Oregon. Boise hired him as OC then promoted to HC. 2014 - Bryan Harsin was a 1st year HC at Arkansas St. where he was 7 - 5. What would Boise do? Would they give Portland St, HC Bruce Barnum a look? Could he be a diamond in the rough? just sayin'
  19. Canales is in a near impossible situation. Let's hope he plays players with next year in mind and helps players keep their grades up. That would truly be taking one for the team on his part.
  20. OK So what would it take for Canales to even have a shot at being considered for HC? Pulling a rabbit out of his hat wouldn't be enough. But what if he surprised everyone and pulled out a really big kangaroo?
  21. Yes but we are ranked number 4 in the Bottom 10. If we lose, we can start to chant: We're number one ......while holding up the proper finger.
  22. What scares me the most about Portland State isn't Portland State. It's us. We've lost 4 games by 113 points. 67 - 180 Our closest loss was to Rice. We scored 2 late TDs to make it a 14 point loss. We've lost all 4 games by an average of 28 points per game. Sorry, but we're just not a very good football team right now.
  23. If they win, he might be a name to remember. An FCS coach who takes down 2 FBS teams in one year will have a job. http://www.goviks.com/coaches.aspx?rc=444&path=football
  24. As if the Portland State coach needs any more motivation........he has a chance to beat 2 FBS teams in the same year.
