  1. "Does every NT department just go out on their own, do their own thing without any on-campus inter-departmental coordination? " Jim, My sister worked for the University over 25 years ago. She worked in the department where everyone at North Texas makes a request for goods and services. Her answer to your question would be a resounding "YES! It's been that way for decades! "Makes me wonder how we will ever be organized, coordinated, unified and on the same page enough to ever raise money for the sole purpose of our getting a very over-due new football stadium which we've (basically) only needed for about 30 years now." Knowing what I know, and knowing what my sister has told me, I've always wondered if we will ever even closely resemble (spirit wise) any of the former SWC schools in Texas. Recent events here at good ol' UNT have shown me that not much has changed in decades. I'm convinced that if it wasn't for the GMG board there wouldn't be near as much growth in game day activity as we have seen in the last five years. And still, with all of the increase in participation that this board has brought about, we are still referred to as "THOSE PEOPLE" in official UNT e-mail correspondence.
  2. It never ceases to astound me about the journey that some of these threads take. Silly me! I thought this thread was about North Texas QB's. I've never seen so many easily-distractable-ADHD-people in my whole life.
  3. Jack, do you remember what the attendance at North Texas games was averaging right before they built Fouts? I know that the student population during that time was somewhere around 6K. They must have had pretty good attendance at that time to build something that holds 20K fans. They must have been anticipating a lot of attendance growth as well. At that time they were building something that would hold triple their student population. If we did something similar today, we would have to build a 90K seat stadium.
  4. Where the Willis Library now sits. In fact, the service road that runs around the NW side of the Library used to be part of the track that went around "Eagle Field".
  5. Jack, you are such a diplomat. BTW were you in any organization while you were at NT?
  6. Deep, that sounds a lot like the old "you can put lipstick on a pig" saying.
  7. Dang! They are moving a LOT of dirt. You'd almost think they were lowering the field.
  8. I would think that most people who grew up in Texas would turn to the HS section first.
  9. I was looking at stats on former North Texas QB's and was curious about a few of them. I was also curious about why these QB are rarely (or never) mentioned. For instance, our first thousand yard passing QB (since we started keeping stats anyway) was Richard Harvey. He started only one year, 1951. His stats were 131att, 61comp, and 1194yrds. He also had 14td passes that year. I guess this question is for GrayEagle. Do you remember Richard Harvey, and how does he compare to our more modern(since 1960) QB's. More recently, we have Joe Milton, who started one year (1970) right after Steve Ramsey left. He had pretty decent stats, 296att., 139comp, 1852yrds and 9td passes. I never saw Joe Milton play, but I'm wondering why (other than he started only one year) he's never mentioned. Also regularly left off any QB discussions are Vidal Carlin, who in two years starting (65 & 66) had 653att, 276comp, and 25td passes and Rusty Hill (1982) 292 X 177 & 9td passes. I watched Vidal Carlin play twice. I don't remember much about him other than the amount of passing that he did compared to former NT QB's that I watched (Billy Ryan and Corky Boland). I guess I was too busy watching his favorite target......John Love. Rusty Hill was a pure drop-back passer. I think he wore #22 and he might have played other positions before being pressed into QB duty. If anyone who saw these QBs' in action have any thoughts/assessments, I would like to hear from you.
  10. In the edge (I guess it's a tab area) of each of the pages in the North Texas section of Texas Football, there is a picture of North Texas students who are painted green. Now, I am SOOOOOO grateful to see that the students care enough about school spirit that they will paint themselves, and mug for the camera. However, the most visable student has the word "CAW" painted on his chest. The last time I heard, only crows go "CAW". How embarrassing.
  11. If this guy was too slow to play (or start at) LB, then is he still fast enough to play FB?
  12. Harry, you can add James Mitchell to that list as well. Whoever thought when he was signed that he would even make the team, much less start at FB. I've said this for years. I'll take a "physically average overachiever" over a highly sought-after physical specimen any day. SUMG's story about our highly sought-after recruit in 78 is another example. Milton Collins was a very impressive specimen of a RB (6'2"X230lbs). As a true freshman, he was in uniform and made the traveling team during the 78 season. But the starter at RB that year was none other than a skinny (5'11"X 175lbs) converted DB/WR by the name of Bernard Jackson. BTW, the super Wal-Mart in Saginaw has Texas Football.
  13. Very impressive and comprehensive list SUMG. On your list I would put Joe Stevenson ahead of Kenny Washington. I would have it #2 Mitch Maher, #3 Joe Stevenson, #4 tie between Kenny Washington and Scott Davis. Ken Smith and Glenn Ray are good additions. A friend of mine covered North Texas during that era (for the Gainesville Paper) and it was his assessment that both K. Smith and G. Ray were better than Washington.
  14. Fire? Now, how could I possibly "fire" at such a devoted and loyal fan. ......."needle" maybe, but never "fire". ......
  15. I agree that Scott was pretty fearless and could run or throw, but that also describes Jordan Case. Jordan had a congenital back problem that caused him to constantly play with pain, and in some cases, spend some days during his junior season on crutches. He had probably the best arm of any QB I've seen at North Texas. He threw "lasers" and "touch passes" with equal ability. He was probably the most nimble and deft scrambler that I have ever watched at North Texas. Your right about Jordan case having more talent to work with. His junior year (his statistical best) he had the services of the great (and late) Bernard Jackson. But what many people forget is that that backfield also had one of the best fullbacks to ever play at North Texas.... Fred Gordon (6'3"X 235lbs and VERY QUICK of the line and a great receiver, as well as runner).
  16. What rumors about Meager? Geeezz, I thought that the ONLY ONE being treated unfairly (by virtue of unfounded rumors and unfair critisizm of his QB skills) was JB? BTW, I'm getting the impression that OL "feels" that they are not getting enough, shall we say, attention/love from the fans. Of course, O-linemen are traditionally the most overlooked position when it comes to fan discussion on a football board.
  17. How about "Gene Pool" who played QB in the mid-80's for Corky. Mack Faggott has to go on the name list too.
  18. If this is going to be "since 1975" then I have to almost totally agree with you, with the following adjustments/additions. I would put Jordan Case above Ken Washington. I also consider Joe Stevenson (played the 1980 season....#10 on your program) worthy of being on the list of QB's. DT/NT- How can we leave Rex Johnson (#56 on your program) off the list? LB- Lester Harper- smallish but VERY MEAN. DB- Jay Saad (#17 on your program) solid player from El Paso who was ALWAYS in position and ALWAYS around the ball. Also, J.T. Smith (#44 on your program) probably the best safety to ever play at NT. PK- Iseed Khoury
  19. I tend to agree with that. I believe that, instead of retiring numbers, the athletic dept should designate those numbers to be worn by outstanding players.
  20. At the time it was DECATUR BAPTIST.......which eventually moved to Dallas in the mid-60's, became a four year school, and is now Dallas Baptist.
  21. I'm not very knowledgable about people who are at the job level that you're talking about (AD, Head Coach, Pro Athlete), but I have observed a couple of things. People at that level are driven by ego and money.....and records.....so that's three. In the case of a pro athlete, he wants to have the opportunity of continuing his all-star status while at the same time making more money. His records go with him, regardless of how many teams he plays for, so money would seem to be his main motivator. As well as the opportunity to pad his records/awards. Money figures in pretty much the same way with AD's, but to me, an AD's "record" would be established by program growth and facility growth. I can't think of a bigger "ego" boost than having the biggest facility and program growth in the history of a D-1 school happening on your watch. IMHO that puts you in line for much bigger jobs than the one at TCU.
  22. Lawyers regulate corporations for our own good? Not unless someone comes to them with a grievance that a corporation, or government agency, or individual, refuses to be reasonable (or negotiate) about. I have yet to hear of a lawyer that filed anything against a corporation for the greater good of the general public. Unless that lawyer was representing an individual or a group of individuals that were seeking some sort of compensation.....which the attorney would get about 1/3 of. <_<
  23. You're bragging on the Aggies? Don't they have enough "chest-pounding-blow-hards" of their own? What sort of favors have they done TCU lately? Bring your own stuff to the board......if you have any.
  24. Rudy, with all due respect, I agree with eeally. What have you been smoking and/or drinking these days? The only way we could have gotten Meyer was BEFORE he went to Bowling Green. I will say that Rick V. should look at some of the things that Meyer does at Utah to get the students involved. DD should also take a look at that offense as well. And finally. They (Utah) didn't renovate their stadium, they tore the old one down and built a new one on the same spot. And a good bit of that construction was done with olympic money.
  25. I hope that someone can come on and "spin" Dickey's comments in a more positive way. But I believe that what I heard Dickey say in his post game comments was that after the Baylor game "the fans (as usual ) cussed us, but we circled the wagons". Circled the wagons against who? The SBC? The World? Or was he talking about the North Texas fans? Who by the way (up to that point in the season) expect a better effort , both from the team and the coaching staff? I'm getting real tired of this "us-against-the-fans-bunker mentality". Someone tell me I'm wrong about this (and make a credible presentationi).
