Devante Kincade - Transfer QB Target
laxtonto replied to James329's topic in UNT Football Recruiting
Dumb question but does football do the same thing as basketball and provide instant eligibility for players transferring to care for family? -

Good for him and hopefully good for UH The issue with a deal like this is that it really puts all the risk on UH side at this point. At least they get a bigger buyout, but it is unlikely that Herman was going to leave for a "lesser" job anyways where be buyout language would be prohibitive. The worst case scenario for UH is that he craters and they are paying him like a P5 coach. Worst case for Herman is that he didn't get a raise and this could have been used against him in recruiting. Keeps the seat warm for him in case UT fires Strong next year but also provides him some protection from some of the lower-end school rumors to protect recruiting. Now all he has to do is win next year like he did this year to live up to the deal.

Either is a solid hire, but essentially this really means that Meacham is staying at TCU for a big raise and Cumbie is moving to UT So UNT got outbid by UT/TCU...

brett vito Monday afternoon coach search update
laxtonto replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
If this gets screwed up as well... I just dont even have the words to express my outrage at this point. The inability to get this wrapped up quickly is just one more sign of UNT's dysfunction. -
I just want one former HS only HC on the staff at a time.. but lets just say if they are big pulls in DFW and would give us a legitimate shot in the arm from a local recruting standpoint I could be convinced to have 2

From what I can gather, the Michigan DC is the top choice at Maryland, FYI- 25 replies

Ive said this once before, but it bears repeating. Smatresk is a hatchman doing a job that needs to be doing. He will always try to do these things in house instead of out in the public. He may not always get the accolades for fixing the mess of others, but that is what he does and does well. In the context of athletics, he will demand more because he knows that athletics is the public face and the media exposure arm of the university. As the President he understands the balancing act between large donors and the performance of the university and will play the game accordingly.I would hope that the disgruntled fans and public outcries are providing him ample cover to do what he does inhouse to once again fix a mess that is not of his creation instead of having to eventually force a messy public ousting. I would love to be able to say that I expect full fledged support from him to fix the AD immediately because he loves UNT athletics, but right now that is an unknown. I can state that he will fix the marketing and public relations arm of the university, and he considers the AD part of that. The timeline might not to be to everyone's liking, but he will fix it because that is in his nature.

Things to look forward to? What about running a progressive offensive system that has a complete design instead of a mishmash of concepts that dont really fit together. Some form of consistency in what the QB's are being taught from a read and route concept standpoint. Hopefully less 7 yard cushions by the DBs. More North South running and less E-W JimJim (going to miss his electric no clue what will happen next nature)

Not just "no", but "Hell No". Would not touch him with a 10 foot pole. This is one of the few hires I would refuse to ever back, and it goes well beyond his issues at Texas and his "recruiting" abilities.
-
Im in this boat, but I lean more towards Applewite because he is a bit more proven as a recruiter and younger. Either hire would make me very happy.

Please no Spav. Dont want the same type of culture that is around A&M to comes to UNT. Great from a shortterm recruiting idea, horrible longterm when dealing with adversity
-
Dont forget that this is also a way to engineer him a new buyout number to help UH get a larger bump is/when he leaves. Nothing wrong with it. His postion at UH, regardless what they pay him, will not stop him from being poached by a Big P5 school. As this really does is to increase the risk on UH is for some how he stays and his assistants leave elsewhere and he flops in the future. Then they are paying 3M for a meh coach.

I have received more calls in the last year from 3 different institutions I applied to for faculty positions than I have had contact from UNT's promotional arm. When I get a biweekly email from Ark State and nothing from UNT, we have a problem.
