  1. I'm with you, I hope Holmen and Knox get a lot of time as well as maybe Hall. Problem is that a lot of these laugher games turn out quite different.
  2. I am not sure criticism of the team is the same as not appreciating the job JJ has done and the great players this team has. Sure NT is 5-1 at this point and that is the best anyone could have asked. The issue with me is I envisioned this team as capable of being the very best at NT of all time. With the big three and Johnson and Hogans back, this could be that special team. Unfortunately, NT had a horrible year recruiting and I don't think anyone can challenge that. The season ending injury to Williams has further exposed a team with no apparent depth. I see a lot of references to team winning big with small rotations and starters playing big minutes. A lot of coaches believe in that philosophy and it works well for them. Your stars may be more tired but they are still better than their backups. The difference at NT is that it is not the preferable style, it is out of necessity and it is not a 7 or 8 man rotation, it is six. The odds of NT going through the rest of the season without injuries that require one of those six to be out a game or two are small. As most of you know it is not only that you may lose a player to foul problems but the fact that the players know the situation and the defense becomes timid because of fear of fouling out and having to play with an out of position or weaker player. Your ability to press and play up-tempo is also tempered. I can see with this current class that JJ may not have wanted to give a scholarship to a weaker player and forgo someone much better next year, but I do think he has severely jeopardized this season with that decision. Water under the bridge at this point, but I think we are all gotten be really disappointed with the season unless someone develops. Edwards is a mystery. I don't know if he is injured or extremely immobile. Knox looks like he has regressed instead of demonstrating all this potential that keeps being touted. I don't know what is up with Holmen, he has played ten total minutes in the last two games. He is obviously in the doghouse. I think or at least hope that one of the three begins to contribute a lot more. The guards are all good and as long as they all remain healthy and can play 30 minutes or more a game, NT will be stretched at guard but should be alright. JJ and this team has always came through, and I think they will this year. However, I don't see a top 50 team that could have been.
  3. Thanks a lot, NT is going to have some special players. Hard to believe that Chris Jones at 6'2 can dunk like that.
  4. Forrest Robinson scores 23 in Eastland 61-40 victory over Comanche South Grand Prairie (6-1) 59 Arlington Lamar 36, Trey Norris scores 7. Lakeview Centennial (5-1) over Jesuit 61-46, Chris Jones with 12. Casper CC 76-;61 over TAAC Academy Brandon Walton numbers in ten games: 14.3 pts (leads team), 4.7 rb, 1.9 asts., 77% ft pct, 37.1% shooting, 36.5% 3pt Solid not outstanding numbers for good JC team
  5. Unless you want to drop football or basketball you are not going to fund baseball with those savings. The track program can't be dropped because in NCAA numbers you would be dropping three sports which would put NT below the required minimum of 16 sports. Golf with 4 ships would not fund much and you would be eliminating our historically best program as well as the best now. Last I heard Dallas Baptist and UTA didn't have football teams, but there are plenty of schools that do that manage to have a baseball team. RV has consistently stated he wants a baseball program so it will probably happen. He has also stated that NT is in such good shape with Title Nine that he would not have to add a woman's sport. But I for one would like to get all our current sports up to a highly performing standard before that is addressed. I think we are getting there with most teams performing at a high Belt level. I think football is poised to turn the corner and new coaching hires in track may help there. Note, track is not a bad program just not one of the top ones in the Belt. WBB is the most down program right now but I don't think that a function of resources.
  6. I think they are just facing up to reality. I think NT's has the ability to dominate the Belt or move on. The big disadvantage that NT has had versus the Belt is that all the other teams receive state funds and obviously NT erred tremendously in the Dodge hire. MTSU, WKU and the Florida schools have been receiving more via student fees plus having state funding for athletics. Little Troy although not having great revenues has been able to compete with their unique recruiting and I think good coaching. The recently enacted student fees at NT and the probable substantial reduction in state funds for the rest of the Belt will give NT the economic advantage to go with NT other strengths. . I am not as enamored with RV as many but he has to be given credit, he has grown this program although he has benefited greatly from three straight athletic friendly presidents. Unfortunately, I don't think the Belt is ultimately who NT must be successful against, it is the Western Division of CUSA. NT's real competition is Houston, UTEP, SMU, Tulsa, Rice and to a lesser extent La Tech, Of course, NT has really not shown anything on the field yet and there will be a lot of bumps, but in my 40+ years of following NT, I do believe the time is finally here. There are only two times when NT had both basketball and football going in the right direction. When I was in school with the Ramsey, Greene, Shanklin, Hardman, and many others football team and the MVC basketball team that included Whitaker, Winfield and Hamilton. Both teams in my view were the best in NT history. The other time was the Fry and Blakeley led football and basketball teams. Both those eras lacked what NT currently has, an administration that really backs athletics.
  7. On second thought, I don't believe this was as bad as I and others are making it sound. I don't excuse the talkers entirely because some were just rude, there was one guy at our table that talked through a lot of it even though no one else was responding. The major problem was the poor event staging. For those that were not there the room itself was set up for dining with approximately half able to set at one time. The audio system was inadequate for the size of the room and what happened was as soon as McCarney starting talking their was group mostly standing that surrounded him effectively disengaging most of people in the room. The simple answer to a lot of the problems would have been to move the standing crowd to the side were at least he could have been seen if not heard by everyone in the room. A little better planning would have prevented this issue, however I do commend the athletic department for the event. An "A" for effort but a lower grade for execution.
  8. Deloach had a good run the first time he was here and he was obviously vastly superior to Mendoza. However, he has not performed in his second go around. Obviously lack of talent and maybe even neglect from the hc contributed to NT's poor defense. No one will ever know, but were Spencer, Kassel, Buckles, Kennedy, etc good because of Deloach or vice versa. I don't think he has a chance at staying and I do believe that McCarney can get a better dc. Deloach has been part of some great things at NT, but it is time for a change.
  9. Nelson seems like an emotional dedicated coach and given their background together; I feared he would be retained. The Gilmore, Cantly switcheroo between DT and DE just made no sense and certainly proved to be more than questionable and we saw a recurrence this year with McCoy. Maybe Nelson is better than I think, but he has made some very poor football decisions. His defensive tackles were actually good this year, but he never found the right combination at DEs. The good thing is that McCarney unlike Dodge has the knowledge to keep him in check and hopefully he will bring in an excellent Defensive Coordinator.
  10. I was there, and I have no idea why about 2/3 were trying to listen and the rest couldn't shut up; no matter how many times they were asked. From above, one said he couldn't hear in the back; well you couldn't hear in the front either. It should have send a signal that when someone has a mike and is standing in front of a room, he just might be trying to speak. Maybe it was the only basketball crowd that could have cared less about football, and resented the interruption of their social hour. It put RV in a hell of position, either possible alienate some of his biggest donors or let the fiasco of a conference with the new head man continue.
  11. Attendance is a very boring subject. I was actually happy in the past couple of years when NT really padded their attendance numbers. This year they don't appear to be doing that, why not? Honesty is not always the best policy, bogus or accurate; the attendance numbers are quoted as gospel. You see a lot of games both football and basketball that attendance is vastly over-reported to laughable numbers. Yet, at the end of the year, those are the numbers that are continuously quoted and to a large extent the heath of the program is measured by.
  12. Guys, a win is a win but there is no way that a young UTA team should hang with NT. NT defense was poor for most of the game, in the first half they got by with incredible shooting and awful shooting but often wide open chances taken by UTA. Playing primarily 6 players is going to take its toll, although I thought JJ did a good job with those six. Knox and Holmen got very little time and Edwards just cannot seem to handle the ball. Thompson had another great performance playing one of his best all around games. Odufuwa and Hogans were good, and Shorter tried but he just is not a front court player. White and Johnson were effective but got taken advantage of defensively. With Hogans and Odufuwa in foul trouble, UTA had an open lane to the basket. They were hitting their threes the second half and thankfully didn't concentrate on drives to the basket. Again a win is a win, but it is disconcerting to have UTA come to Denton with a much deeper team. NT second half collapse was no doubt aided by fatigue, but this team is going to apparently learn to play very short handed.
  13. The SPit is a fine facility so there should be no comparisons to Fouts. I can see it getting some major renovations, but don't think it will be replaced in any adult fan's lifetime. One thing you have to remember at NT is that basketball at NT is not even remotely close to breaking even. The ticket revenue does not even cover the coaches salaries much less any other expenses. The point is I don't see a lot of reason to spend more money only to increase the deficit. Adding suites would add some revenue but is there really enough demand for even a long payoff of those construction fees. NT also has the problem of the non-athletic ownership of the facility. How do you justify funds for private suites at a multi-use building? There is also an issue of can you use athletic fees for a non-athletic facility. If NT could maintain an attendance average better than 5,000 and have a season ticket base of 2,000 then improvements would be much easier to justify. As far as a center scoreboard, why can't they put up what they had before. A video screen would be nice, but I would just like to see the score and time without bending my neck and losing all vision of the game.
  14. Didn't think any hc would have retained Canales because of the divided loyalties it would create. I think this shows how confident that McCarney is with his ability. I am not sure that Canales won"t get a better opportunity, but a great first hire for McCarney.

  17. It will be great for TCU in football but should also quickly elevate their basketball team. Great move for TCU, I would have projected it would really harm their non-revenue sports; but the distance in the MWC did not hurt them at all. The bad part for NT is that TCU should have a great advantage in basketball recruiting over everyone in the state.
  18. Could be based on a career basis. I am not sure I have ever seen anyone as good as Jamario Thomas's freshman year. Cobbs was stronger than Dunbar but not as fast. Very close at this point. If Dunbar improves any his senior year, he should be the best all time.
  19. Oh, it's open ended; if he doesn't accept than NT goes into next season with no coaching staff. Sarcasm aside, in my experience; a candidate would get a relatively short amount of time to consider an offer and that time would be specified.
  20. No question, you would jump at it if the finances work and I think they would. The additional conference revenues should offset the travel expenses and the upgrade would be substantial. I doubt that NT will have an opportunity, but they could not refuse membership.
  21. Why are so many of you so opposed to the new coach? McCarney was offered the job and he took it. McCarney did not make the decision, he accepted the job to NT. It appears some of you expected him to decline the position because you prefer Canales. I liked Canales and would have been happy if he had been selected. But he was not selected, McCarney was. I really question some of the opposing stuff I see posted. A 15 year old abuse allegation that was recanted and there has apparently not been a hint of an issue since then.. Lots of bs about how bad his hc record was at Iowa State, completely ignoring the fact that ISU has got to be one of the hardest gigs in America. Yes, I think winning at ISU is a hell of a lot harder than winning at NT in the Belt. I think the majority of fans protesting the hire will come around and unite behind McCarney and NT. The truth is he is the most qualified football coach has hired since Fry and no one can agrue. He also gets a lot of support from ISU fans that seems to be ignored by many but I think it is very meaningful. A lot of you are really down on Rawlings and RV abvout this hire, either because you supported Canales or wanted a flashier hire. The facts are that no one knows if Canales, Fran, or any other coach would be a success here. I personally have big reservations about the approach Canales used working long term. As far as name coaches, I don't think anyone mentioned other than Leach would generate great interest in the NT program. I doubt if Leach had any interest and frankly that any AD would want to deal with him. McCarney is the new coach and no one here is going to change that. I guess ranting about the hire is therapeutic but would it be more rational to give the guy a chance before you renounce him. I think the NT fan base in general was more than patient with Dickey and Dodge. Why not let McCarney at least address the crowd, hire a staff, recruit and play a few games before you condemn him.
  22. In my mind, Dodge at least never ran down the program and from afar seemed to work very hard at righting the ship. Dickey was no doubt a better football coach but constantly put down the school and the fans. After his successes still in my opinion primarily based on one phenomenal recruiting class, Dickey put a lot more effort into getting a better gig than he did recruiting. His us against the world approach did nothing for the program and his constant put downs of his situation certainly didn't help recruiting. I know DD had health issues as well as personal, but DD basically fired himself. Your employer might put up with your arrogance when you are performing but when you can't out recruit Southland schools; a change has to be made. Did you notice a little difference in the way Dodge and now Canales handled their termination versus DD? I don't think people in general give Dickey enough credit for his on the field record of four straight championships and 26 conference wins. However, he was running the program into the ground his last few years and a change had to be made. Unfortunately, the Dodge hire was a disaster on the field but I really don't thing Dickey would have done any better on the field and the program definitely didn't need his baggage. As far as McCarney mulling over an offer, get real. Very few people don't take a while to think over offers even if it is their dream job. Most employers would be in shock if someone immediately agreed to an initial offer for a job of this level. As far as fan tolerance, there is not going to be much no matter who they could have hired, be it Leach or Canales. This is a very important hire for NT and hopefully they did all they could to insure it was the right one. NT is not in position to eat a big contract, no matter what the circumstances. I join you in hoping that McCarney is the right hire because if he is not, NT is going to miss a golden opportunity to grow this program.
  23. Comparative scores are nice and a large part of the rpi, but they work both ways. TTSM just got beat with 124 points no less by Lady of the Lake college a NAIA school. So if you are going to consider Rice playing UT tough as a positive sign, you have to look at Texas State's loss to lowly Lady of the Lake as the opposite.
  24. Go read the Iowa State message boards. McCarney was really well respected by the ISU fans. Many NT fans may not be impressed by his resume, but the ones who should know best in hind sight are well aware and appreciate the job McCarney did. The decision has been made, lets get behind this coach.
  25. I hate to break it to you, but the BOR had to approve McCarney's contract. By the way it is a contract, it does not get overridden and can't be voided unless you go through a legal process and have a legitimate reason like fraud.
