  1. Don't forget QB's are usually the best combination of intelligence and skill on high school teams and can end up at other positions (ie; Camper, Kassell, Carey, Hamilton, etc.). It may make sense to get several high school QB's and let them compete for QB and then convert some to other positions.
  2. Ouch, I don't have much interest in recruiting until a commitment is made but I do like to think that most recruits will honor their word. Obviously, NT wanted him are they would not have committed, and I like to think the coaching staff and resources coming on stream at NT will win most of battles against Belt competition. A loss IMO, but not a big one other than it is at a severe need position.
  3. Agree with most comments, but not all Boutwell may have out grew the de position but he could be a redshirt freshman as he came in as a gray shirt., way too early to be disappointed in his progress Bellazen - I think he played, therefore didn't redshirt Brown - A lot more than a role player, was lauded as best special teams player and played at both te and hb before injury, awarded ship last year Cook - One of a myriad of injured players last year, was starter when healthy and last year Graham - Ended up starting at safety, good solid player Miller - Played great for freshman walk on, made lot of plays at te; would like to see him at his original position; lb Phillips - I didn't see any slump at all; became a full time starter Prior - Played very well at HB, hope he moves back to lb, however Squieer - Small walk on that has excelled on special teams, particularly blocking kicks Sashington - Given ship shortly after slart of season; will battle for time in secondary Players I expected to see more of, some may have been injured Fitzpatrick - With lack of tes and hbs and on the more recognized recruits with a redshirt year, figured he would play Noble - Had some good early reviews but was a non-factor last year Franklin - I thought he would prosper in the ol, don't remember him playing at all last year Anyiam - Late ballyhooed signee, don't remember him even suited up; wonder if he was injured or just gone Cantly - Played but injury plagued; Gained too much weight during rehab and never really challenged for position Herron - Backup LB, but never seemed to excel as hoped Davis - Never has lived up to billing; reported overweight; not sure if he ever played or is still on team White - After wasting his freshman year redshirt, not sure if he played last year; could have redshirted Obi - Not a bad year by any means, but I hoped for more after a surprise freshman year Pleasant Surprises last year Chancellor - Frankly I wondered why he was signed, not even first team all district; had great year, can't wait to see if he can play receiver Miller - Looked like the best of the walk ons on paper and was very good for true freshman; Good candidate for a ship Abbe - I thought NT was grasping at straws, signing a hs offensive lineman and converting to dt; Reporting way over weight but showed a lot of potential Baine - Showed a lot of moxie as fourth string QB pressed into action, I don't think he will get many chances at QB; I wonder if he could play lb or safety McCoy - Out of nowhere, should challenge for playing time for next two seasons Leppo - Palyed well as freshman before injured Deans - Did relative well as punter when pressed into service Byrd - Looked great earlier as freshman; not sure he is the next great NT back but had a good year
  4. kimbell (20-1) wins New Orleans Sugar Bowl Tournament highschoolsports.nola.com/news/article/-9129593663692548031/riverside-falls-short-in-sugar-
  5. He also got a boat load of criticism., it always comes with the QB position; but that is escalated by the coach/son dynamic. I will never forget the number of football nitwits who blamed Meager for the SMU loss in which he threw for over 600 yards. Because of dad or not; NT doesn't get a lot of UT decommits and almost all the players are at NT because they didn't get a perceived better offer.
  6. Friday games South Grand Prairie (16-4) with easy win over Mansfield Timberview, Trey Norris with 18 Lakeview Centennial(20-1) 77 Sachse 48, Chris Jones with 10 In Sugar Bowl Tournament, Kimbell (18-1) 47 Imhotep 42 with Jordan Williams with 8 Had to look up Imhotep, it is a charter school in Philadelphia, PA According to one source was in nations top 10 at one time this year, Have 3 players with D1 ships to Robert Morris, George Washington and Niagara Big Time Win
  7. You can fault Riley alll you want as a ball player but calling him a spoiled brat is a different story. Fact, Riley was basically a wide receiver until the Tune injury, then he was put back into the QB rotation. After that I am sure getting Thompson ready to start was the emphasis not the back up QB. Harping on his performance at Army and ignoring the circumstances is over the top in my view. If you don't think that Riley was a major part of NT's play post the Dodge termination then you and I have a big disagreement. Evaluating gutsy QB's is beyond ridiculous; Riley played when a lot would not have and seemed to always conduct himself well. What other players did has absolutely nothing to do with it.
  8. Unless the "Pirate" also recruited for golf and softball, it looks like an overall Tech issue.
  9. Assumption it is a TCU fan that paid for the boards, and the odds are that may be right; but it could be anyone opposed to the BCS.
  10. ;Great, I hope you have the same view after a long and successful newspaper career, if that is what you want. Based on what I've seen, journalism is not that pure, people I,ve known in the business lament it is a constant struggle to balance economics and journalistic integrity and there are plenty of compromises. I don't think any would censor a significant story, but they do recognize that it may be more important to remain publishing than confronting key constituencies over relatively minor issues. Luckily, controversies also sell papers; so there is a build in balance. By the way I don't think the DRC is influenced at all in their NT stadium reporting, if anything they would side with the university if financially motivated. I just think your view that reporting at some level is not tied into generating profits although commendable is naive.
  11. I agree with most of your comments, however the number of injured returning makes it a little difficult to project. The severity of the injury the leg up given to other players during their absence, etc. There are actually three returning starters returning at center for instance; Leppo, Fortenberry and Johnson. Two promising corners in Ford and Sashington and saftety Cook all injured last year could all contend for db sports. Coaches will tell you that all spots are always open, but some are a lot more open than others. The most sure starters IMO are Tomlinson, Dunbar, Carey, Olen, Orr and Phillips. I think both the offensive, defensive lines and defensive backfield will be wide open. Joining Carey in the starting lineup should be Stradford and Bynes. Herron and Prior could battle for the third lb position. Olawale and Thompson are returning leaders for TE and QB but my guess is that nether will end up starting. An aside, I saw a picture on the athletic site of who I think was Abbe (don;t think NT has anyone else that big) with his arm in a sling.
  12. If you think advertising and subscriptions don't effect the newspaper's slant, then I don't think you know how capitalism works. Freedom of the press is a powerful tenet, and public opinion should have no effect on what is printed, but in reality any commercial process is ultimately dependent on its customers.
  13. Newspapers should express their view in editorials whether popular or not. However, in the real world that is disappearing quickly as print papers struggle to even exist. Without doubt, the DRC gives NT atheltes the best coverage of any outside outlet, so any boycott or such is problematic. Yes, I do think NT supporters who subscribe should make their view known and express their desire for more balanced coverage. The DRC despite giving NT athletics good coverage also seems to delight in putting down NT sports off the sports page. I do appreciate the reporting of Vito but I think he and the newspaper did a great disservice to NT and coach Dodge by their handling of the Dodge racism allegation. The allegation did occur so I can't really fault the newspaper for printing the story. However, when all allegations were dropped as unsubstantiated; the DRC and Vito were really much too silent. Again the DRC can editorialize all they want about the foolishness of NT athletics, but they have to expect some fallout. The stadium vs neightborhood debate reporting seems to be very one sided. Why not have a pro versus con editorial? Surely, there is someone on their staff (vito if no other) that can elaborate on the many advantages to the city of having a new stadium and successful athletic program. Actually, I find the Denia protest almost laughable, would they prefer a huge shopping center on that land. It would be perfect between the two highways. Instead of traffic concerns a few times a year for a few hours, they could deal with it daily for most of the day.
  14. If coaching decisions were made by message boards, no one would last past their first few defeats.
  15. . Kimball (17-1) beat John Ehret (La) 60-53 in Sugarbowl Tournament, Jordan Williams had 12
  16. A lot of I guess wishful thinking. Universities almost never try to get out of contracts. South Florida being an exception. Unless it is really something bad such as criminal activity, it is usually not going to happen. Making a bad hire is something that Schools have to pay for. RV claims that 5 year contract must be offered these days to attract a quality hire that includes apparently high school coaches and assistant coaches looking for that hc job . It does sound like the pressure is getting to Stephens, but this incident does not appear serious. The major thing in this game, is the team at least played a good half.
  17. A step back for sure. The Muts played well with a lot of emotion and hustle. NT has to expect that everywhere in the Belt, there are no easy away wins. Our lack of depth was really exposed and our secondary front court men definitely took a step backward.
  18. Could NT play any worse? NT's bigs are being abused. Edwards cannot play and I saw Holmen actually dodge a player driving to the basket. Lucky to be down only 9, Middle is a bad team but they are playing defense and hustling, more than I can say for the Green. Got to get better.
  19. What substantiates your assertion that Dodge would not be the lead QB candidate next year? I highly doubt that McCarney or Canales would discourage Dodge after the year he just had. The "fact" is that NT does not have an abundance of quarterback possibilities and I see no reason, unless its related to injuries, that NT would not want Riley back in the QB mix.
  20. Actually 30 points would be close based on SS's record against the Muts. I hope for an upset not only for NT but their coach is one of the biggest a$$es around.
  21. On woman's broadcast, Steve B. said Odufuwa to play tonight; great news.
  22. I was thinking of posting but was sure I would jinx NT. Great, almost unbelievable first half for NT. Hopefully this can be a turnaround game.
  23. Damn, we must have been watching a different Riley Dodge. I saw a player who gave his all to the program and was far from a spoiled brat, who if anything was very football savvy. Injury prone, yes but that only enhances my opinion of a never say quit player. His arm was not a cannon but adequate despite the injuries. I do agree that Todd Dodge was a failure as head football coach as the record certainly collaborates. However, Riley was far from a failure as a player and in fact saved this season from being a complete disaster.
  24. Right now you have one QB who suffered a bad injury last year and a commitment from a sophomore juco. I doubt Teegarden or Blaine will ever see the field again at QB unless another horrible string of QB injuries reoccurs. Thompson has barely seen the field and Osborne is a complete unknown at this point. Osborne will probably have the edge if Thompson can;t go in the spring. Both Osborne and Thompson appear to be far from dual threat QBs,although both are mobile enough to keep a defense from totally playing them to pass. I think there will be a couple more QB's signed that will be competitive.
  25.
