  1. It is rare for an incoming coach to retain any of the previous staff. Occasionally the recruiting coordinator will be maintained, but with the state of NT recruiting; that is not going to happen.
  2. Didn't miss your point; did you miss mine. Corky in his second year, first in 1-aa was playing with a team largely recruited at the 1a level, therefore had an advantage. His first game was against the team he had coached Baylor and it was a close game but he won I think 2 games that year. No doubt, Corky got the team up for the big oc games and did a better job against those teams then any of his 1a predecessors. He is also the only NT coach I've seen get into a fight with a player on the side lines. While I am not as nostalgic about Nelson as some, I do believe if NT gets the right coach he can be quickly successful in the Belt. NT should and could dominate the Belt. While overall the Belt has gotten marginally better, only Troy has really elevated themselves and I think their questionable recruiting strategy should be much harder to accomplish going forward with rules on the number of players that can be signed.
  3. Geez, being I saw most of those games, including the infamous win-loss against Texas, I am will aware of his record. The other side of the coin is that he did not consistently win against SHSU, SFA, McNeese, NE La, etc. I am not knocking Nelson, I liked him but he definitely had off the field issues and despite the last twenty years, I hope for more than a break even coach.
  4. I like Corky, but his legend grows the farther we get away from his time. You do realize that Corky first couple of years, he was playing in 1aa with a team primarily recruited at the higher classification, so he should have had a big advantage. Going down to 1aa was almost the death knell of the NT football program. I think the NT decision makers believed being one of the biggest and traditionally best teams in that classification, that NT would dominate. It never happened primarily because of much higher academic standards than the norm in the Southland. Both Nelson and Parker stated that they won almost every recruiting battle between NT and other Southland conference teams, but the problem was that NT just could not qualify most of athletes they played against. This situation was not remedied until Parker last years when the NCAA set minimum qualifying standards. Corky could get the team up for the big games, and the 1988 squad should have won the 1aa championship. That was a sophomore dominated squad that I thought was up for great things the next two years, but it did not happen. Corky overall was a below .500 coach with all but one year in 1aa, he had some great wins but he never really consistently won. It is amazing that NT has been so bad in football that Corky would be considered one of our best coaches.
  5. What in the world would be gained by naming an interim coach? All it would do is reduce your coaching staff by one, and put someone with no hc experience at all leading the team. The only rationale would be that you are auditioning one of the coaches for the future hc. Canales would be the only one that would possible be considered, but I don't see anyway that NT would want anyone associated with the Dodge experiment. I can't see any enthusiasm generated or any upward bump in recruiting generated by anyone already here Dodge is not Dickey, he is going to go out with class and give it his all to the very last game. If NT actually hires a new HC before season end, it might make some sense to name an interim to save Dodge the embarrassment and the AD the problems that would ensure if Dodge actualllly rallied the troops for some late wins. .
  6. I don't think there is anyway that Dodge returns unless the team start winning. There is no way that NT is going to open a new stadium with a coach with absolutely no momentum..
  7. I really don't know for sure, but I think NT still has a lot of players living off campus. It is one thing for Stallings to point out the issue but another to stop it. The facts are that most had rather live off campus and most likely do, to prohibit this could be detrimental to recruiting. I know I was amazed at how much SMU was providing Hopkins (the brother of the one who played basketball at NT) for off campus housing.
  8. My thoughts on the game and other comments: The game was a hard fought between two bad teams. Anyone criticizing Riley about his performance in the last two games, is either football ignorant or so wrapped up in "blame the Dodges" that they are blind to reality. Was I the only one that wondered why NT didn't go for two on their first td of the fourth quarter when they refused an off side penalty to take the extra point? Not necessarily because of fear of missing an extra point later on, but to make that extra point the winning score. The offensive line even with the third center should be better, I wonder how much a relatively inexperienced offensive line coach is a factor. Defensive ends are still a problem, I did like McCoy starting; but there was no pressure on the QB except on blitzes and NT paid dearly for those blitzes. Lack of defensive back depth was also evident in this game. Mason is a good QB but NT's defense made him look great. Is every team we play going to score on the first possession, I thought NT had them stopped three times only to have first downs made on penalties. Ex the final extra point, the special teams played maybe the best game in the Dodge era. Chancellor looks like the real deal. I wonder if Dodge spoke to the referees about the continued calling of offensive counts by the defense. This is usually something that is stopped when recognized. We now all see the reason that challenged plays cannot be shown at the stadium. Terrible calls by the refs. I wonder if they could really tell anything from their instant replays and didn't just reverse the call based on the big screen. Games balls to Dunbar and Dodge; Good games by Atkisson, Jackson, Robertson, Phillips and great plays by McCoy and Olawale. Overall, just too many bad mistakes to beat almost any team. T. Dodge fate was basically sealed with this loss. He certainly was not really for the job in the beginning, but I would have liked for him to have at least a fighting chance this year; but the injuries are just too much to overcome. Fans deserting the team, flogging the coaching staff, and otherwise expressing great displease with the state of NT football are certainly abundant and have more than ample justification. However, the team has had an unbelievable string of bad luck, the coaches fate is almost sealed, and change is coming. The team has not given up despite all that has occured. Based on those circumstances, why not continue to support the team and look forward to better days. I know you have heard that mantra many times, but unlike in the past there are actually some tangible reasons that things may be changing in the right direction for NT.
  9. Poor Dodge, when he loses: he gets the lion share of the blame, but a win and it is the great coordinators. I highly doubt, Dodge has turned everything over to his assistants; but even if he has, he deserves credit for the win. Everyone involves should share in this and I hope many more victories this year including Dodge.
  10. Thanks for the update, hope we can get about 6 more like them.
  11. Overall the defense had a good game, but they were really shaky at the end with the game on the line. FAU last td was what 3 plays, and they did not exactly shut them down on their last drive. I'm sure I am not the only one that thought here we go again when FAU scored on three plays after NT last td.
  12. Did NT really get a win with no major injuries? Maybe things are changing.
  13. I think NT is probably about the same, but much of the conference has caught up. Not a good thing, particularly when you consider that NT has improved it's soccer facility. If you look at the Belt teams now, many are recruiting the same club teams as NT. Others such as MTSU have used foreigners to close the gap. I think NT used to get just about have their pick of second level metroplex players and they have a lot of competition now. The soccer program has traditionally been the strongest sport at NT, but the trend is not good. This year's team is very young and has good potential, they have played tough; but they have not yet been able to beat good teams.
  14. Cooley, how does Norris look? RE: Phillips comments Most on this board have a lot of faith in Jones and Co., however he certainly can be questioned on recruiting; like having two unused ships for this year. Signing one of those easy to recruit off-guards would have greatly helped this years team. As far as the Wyoming sharpshooter, being that done of us as seen him or probably heard of him before his reported interest; I will trust in the staff on this one.
  15. A lot of talk about coaching, consultant reports and injuries, but very little about the game tomorrow. It is obviously the most important game of the year, it should demonstrate whether this team is going to continue to decline or pull together and be a factor in the Belt. Although with the injuries, NT's odds have certainly diminished from a promising open day showing. I think the team will rally and play tough. If Riley can get back close to were he was last year and the defense continues to evolve, NT will have a chance. Under the circumstances, I am not sure many would bet on the Green, but the team can still rebound and upset FAU. The defense and Dunbar will have to have big games, but that is certainly possible. Just remember that Dickey's championship teams were usually very bad in oc play, and the conference doesn't appear to be particularly strong this year. Most of us will continue to support the team no matter what, but until NT is eliminated from the league championship; there is still hope this year can be salvaged.
  16. No, this guy should have been this years recruit. Was much higher rated than the two from Mexico that are currently on the team. I don't remember his name but he was listed as a NT commit. He was also mentioned on the official site blog although not by name as a great commit. Both Jones and Spinella played in the first tournament.
  17. Great start, looks like a very good year ahead. As an aside, does anyone know what happen to the Mexican recruit who was rated number 16 junior in the world and had committed to NT?
  18. If I remember correctly, Neinas was paid $10k to 12K. Not sure where all this 250K is coming from.
  19. Very poorly done, however anyone expecting much in a written public report were very over optimistic. Hopefully, there was a lot more communicated than written. I really expected at least a more upbeat puff piece, but this document is totally worthless. The only real recommendation, I saw in this report was to market more to the imediate Denton area instead of the broader DFW. Problem is that I don't see NT doing much of either. I guess his main point and you really have to search is to consistently win in the Belt and not worry about conference affiliation. I don't know why you would want a consultant to list published reported budgets and compare them on a chart. First, someone with his background should know that this numbers are very suspect and should at least provide some insight in to what these numbers actually mean. I expected nothing but boiler plate and a few obvious recommendations and even on that basis, this report falls short.
  20. If he is like the vast majority of consultants, his number one recommendation will be to get more consulting. Based on the really limited engagement, expect the usual boiler plate and a few very broad recommendations. I had some hopes for his engagement primarily because he was hired by an interim President with no known agendas to promote. However, the contract is so limited that any worthwhile review of the athletic structure, personnel, and objectives seems unlikely.
  21. Brandon Walton Casper JC PPG 11.1, RPG 3.3, APR 2.2, STLs 1.2, FG% 38, 3FG% 36% Freshman stats not exceptional, but solid;
  22. I would think that the talent and the will of the team is a much bigger factor now, than the ability of the coaches.
  23. Small point, but why would you state a team that has lost 5 starters has it as bad as NT; who has lost twice as many. Lot of hewing and hawing by RV, but I don't know what else he could do in his situation.
  24. As much as I hate NT almost constantly changing the shade of green, I really don't like the current one. I vote go back to the darker green before Dodge. I also agree with most, go with the current eagle logo on a green helmet. Not much for uniform talk but anything is better than another coach thread.
  25. If Dodge doesn't get a miracle out of his remaining team, he will be terminated. However, he will be only the last in a long line of coaches that have not succeeded at NT. In the last forty years, there has been one coach; Hayden Fry that has achieved at NT. Some may put Corky on that list but that was at a lower level and his teams really never dominated the Southland. While if it had been my decision; DD would have been fired when he went public numerous times with his view that NT was the hardest place to coach in America statement. However, I would have fired him because his statements hurt the program not because it was not at least close to the truth. For a variety of reasons: isolation, administration apathy toward athletics, intense competition, etc.; NT has never developed the infrastructure necessary to be competitive in the fb division. At long last, NT is building the structure needed to be successful. Unfortunately, Dodge was a bad hire at a critical time; a big gamble that did not pay off. Dodge may finally be turning into a legitimate fb head coach but it is too late at NT unless he produces a miracle 2010. NT must have momentum going into next season either by a rebounding program or the hope for one through a new hire. In hind sight Dodge was not close to being ready to be a fb division head coach and his development has been slow so he probably will join Rust, Tyler, Parker, Simon, Moore and Dickey as coaches that have failed here. Next year coach will have advantages none of these men had and it is imperative that a sound deciison is made. With the renewed conference turnover, NT must improve the football program. Dodge is getting his last chance which is probably more than should be expected with his record. I think he actually had a good chance if the unparalleled injury toll had not happened. Dodge does not necessarily deserve better support but I think the team does. This is a team that has suffered through more than any team should; little success and unparalleled injury problems. I am hoping the team will not give up and the fans will not give up on the team.
