Men's Golf Has A Better Showing

I hate to be negative but men's golf has done little since Jackson became coach. Three of their top 5 are seniors. They have one good prospect from Argyle. Even if those three turn out to be above average compared to previous teams, it's not enough. You really need five good golfers and we don't seem to have them.

For a school that has four NCAA titles in our legacy, we haven't been even regionally competitive in a long time.

What other school that cares about golf doesn't have a golf course for their team?

We had a golf course that was a glorified goat ranch. These players have access to numerous local courses that are close to campus and have much better facilities than the old NT golf course ever thought about having.

Again though, how does that compare to other schools. Yes they have a better options than the teams 60 years ago, but so does everyone else. I know of 2 kids where that was a factor. they chose to go to a school where they could play a round any time they wanted and not have to drive all around the metroplex to go play.

North Texas finished eighth (out of 14 teams) at the Border Olympics. That's tied for their best finish this season, other than their own classic. They've been as low as 18th.

I don't think that the lack of an on-campus facility is the reason they do so poorly. They have an indoor practice facility and, if it were critical, they could probably get a working relationship with Oakmont or the classic course on the highway to Fort Worth. They might could even use Robson Ranch, which is in the Denton city limits but closer to Argyle. There are precious few universities that have their own golf course.

The greatest college program, the University of Houston, doesn't have their own course but they've won something like 17 national titles over the years. Dave Williams was not the greatest teacher ever but he was the greatest coach. He started working on getting talent while the golfer was still a junior in high school. He could spot budding talent better than anyone and once signed, saw that they had great instruction.

Even with our only national titles being in golf, we are still unwilling to devote the time and money to becoming a national power.
