  1. I just called the Director of Bands (Tu. 9-20) and asked if the Green Brigade was going to Tulsa. "For the game?" she asked. Anyway, I was sent to someone else. This lady told me that Tulsa had contacted NT and told them that there would be NO halftime show. There will be, according to this lady in the Music dept. a "Make a Wish Foundation" event. Not even the Tulsa band is performing. She said the GB had planned to perform and that busses ordered had to be cancelled. Now, when is the last time you went to a football game and there was NO halftime show. Aside from your kid's middle school game. So go to the Tulsa game and Make a Wish. My wish is a Mean Green win. GO MEAN GREEN
  2. I wonder how barbecued elephant would taste ? I'd love to find out Saturday night. Maybe the Tide players have read that they're 99 point favorites. Pass the elephant, please; GO MEAN GREEN
  3. September 15, 2011 National site uses UNT as a punchline, first in a series of Q&As 9:10 AM Thu, Sep 15, 2011 | Permalink Brett Vito E-mail News tips I keep mentioning what a long, tough road Dan McCarney is going to have to travel at UNT to pull it out of the hole that was dug in spectacular fashion over the last four years. I came across another example of why that is today. UNT is already in ESPN's Bottom 10 this week, and now CBS Sports used the Mean Green as its punch line in a story ... about Memphis ... in the lead. "Having followed North Texas for the past several years, I know a thing or two about bad football." Yikes. Here's a link: What does UNT have to do with Memphis?strong> Since UNT is playing Alabama this week and I am the only guy who covers the program outside of the student newspaper, I have been asked to be on two radio shows -- the first was last night -- and do a series of Q&As with the Alabama papers. Here's what I got back in my swap with Chase Goodbread, the fine Alabama writer at the Tuscaloosa News. If you want to check out his Alabama coverage, you can follow this link
  4. When a scholarship player quits the team, is he required to repay the University for the expenses he incurred ? If he's still in school, does he pay from here on ? GO MEAN GREEN
  5. Wright Waters was at the dedication of Apogee Friday night and was invited to speak. I didn't see anything from him Saturday night.
  6. Did I mention I had a great Saturday ? More imortantly, my wife and NT Alum had a great Saturday. I got to the Alumni Pavillioin and visited with old friends and met some new ones. I got my Apogee coin and then walked around to take in whole experience in. We got to the "experience" at 2:00 and did in fact have a difficult time finding our friends. There were so many OTHER friends tailgating. My favorite memory was the fans all wearing GREEN that kept coming and coming across the bridge. At one point, I mentioned that I thought it was the same people just making a circle around me. The students made the day. No question. It was the students. I just can't wait to show Indiana some North Texas hospitality. Apogee Stadium. The finest in America. GO MEAN GREEN
  7. I'm very glad I saw Pat Boone tonight. However, he did a lot more talking than singing. He had a piano man, but he also had sound tracks and on at least one song, he was singing along with himself. After hearing the concert, I don't think the Green Brigade was involved at all. He has recorded an album of patriotic music and i would guess the national Anthem is on said album. Again, I'm glad I went and the place looked to be about 90-95% sold.
  8. I've seen the BG wear T-shirts before, but this is the first time I recall them wearing GREEN shirts. Thanks.
  9. whhile we were at the Alumni Center before thee game, we heard "Pat Boone" rehearsing. When he "sang" the National Anthem, it was the same recording. Did you notice the band was standing, holding their instruments. I'm assuming he recorded it with the Green Brigade earlier, or maybe it was patched into a GB recording, but it wasn't sung live last night. Many stadiums do this to avoid the 1 or 2 or 3 second delay confusing the persormer, to prevent any risk of forgetting the words, or to prrevent some nut from making a statement with our national Anthem. I think it's actually a good idea for the above reasons. You still hear who you are hearing, just not live. I'm going to the Pat Boone concert this afternoon. I hope there is a large croud there. I hope there's a large croud with anything NT does. GO MEAN GREEN
  10. I know we're used to "in and out" at Fouts, but what do other "big program" stadiums do ? I've been to a lot of college stadiums but I'm not an "in and out" guy. Give me some specific examples.
  11. Apogee holds just under 31,000. I was disappointed that we didn't have fans wall to wall but the place looked great. And of course I was pleased in the anount of GREEN in the stands. The students made the atmosphere. Thanks all of you. See you in 2 weeks agains Indiana. GO MEAN GREEN
  12. I haad a great time. and my wife had a great time. The tailgating was incredible. We got there at 2:00 and had no trouble getting in. the area is so big and there were so many tents I had a hard time finding my group. As far as walking from Fouts, people kept coming and coming. Young men in green ties and shorts and ladies in shorts or skirts and cowboy boots. Very big college type. I loved our seats. I got a little bugged that we had to wait so long to get in the stadium. Great food and everybody was upbeat and ready for the new era of NT football we've heard about. Getting out was a breeze. We stayed for a while and visited with Mean Green friends. When we left, we were directed to go in front of Apogee and out the service road. Nuttin' to it. Great time. I can't wait to come back and win this time. And we're going to win some games. Thanks to everybody that made my first game at Apogee great. GO MEAN GREEN
  13. I listen to KNTU to hear of things going on at my University. Silly me. I think I can tell the professional broadcasters on Channel 8 as opposed to the student broadcasters on KNTU. I know they'll be pros some day. But yes, I can tell the difference. All I want is some University of North Texas coverage. I don't think that's too much to expect. GO MEAN GREEN
  14. First, congratulations to North Texas students and Mean Green fans everywhere for selling out Apogee Stadium. But they didn't hear about it from KNTU Radio. Listening on the way home tonight (F) I paid special attention to the KNTU sports report. I even took notes so I'd be accurate. The stories in order: 1. Ohio State gymnastics coach arrested 2. NFL Packers vs. Saints 3. Jets vs. Cowboys 4. Jason Garrett used to play for the Giants 5. Jay Ratliff got new contract 6. Serena Williams had a tantrum 7. Somebody shot a NBA Grizzlies guard 8. NASCAR Now I was told to wait until Friday and that there would be lots of coverage of the NT-Houston game and the opening of Apogee Stadium. Zip, nada, nuthin'. I know the "K" is a FCC assigned letter, but what in the world does "NTU" stand for ? 'Cause it certainly isn't North Texas. GO MEAN GREEN
  15. Thank you North Texas students and Mean Green fans everywhere. GO MEAN GREEN
  16. Dear Benny, Back in 1975 at Texas Stadium, you guys didn't even use the single digit side of your scoreboard. If you didn't use what was provided you then, why should we get excited about some boastful talk now ? GO MEAN GREEN
  17. As I've mentioned before, I listen to KNTU news on the way home. Tonight (W) I was especially anxious to hear about the NT-Houston game during the sports segment. I heard about Rangers, Cowboys, Stars, and NASCAR. During the news, I heard about the wildfires in Texas, the Republican Presidential Debate, and that former Secretary of Defense Robert Gates will be at NT tonight (I'm going). But nothing, nothing about what I consider the most important game in North Texas history. The opening of a $80 million stadium isn't big enough news to make it on the 5:30 KNTU news lineup. Does KNTU know the University of North Texas has a football team ?
  18. Wouldn't it be ironic if we were critized for not building Apogee big enough ? GO MEAN GREEN
  19. A couple of years ago, RV stated that we could net as much playing at home with "X" number of paid attendance as playing a big money game on the road. I don't remember what that number was (15K ?)but I recall it not being too too high. Hopefully, with the increase of season ticket sales and a renewed support of our students, we can play at Apogee instead of traveling. Do I understand as of right now we only have 5 games scheduled for next year ? And speaking of money games, I'd like to see NT raise the fee for money games. $1 million guaranteed. Too high ? Find somebody else.
  20. We, NT Athletics, has a legacy of "walk ups" and "I'm not going to buy season tickets." For decades, we, me too, have waited until the last minute to go to the games or come into the stadium. I haave arrived during the playing of our National Anthem many more times than I'd like to be reminded of. Those days are over. If you want tickets, plan ahead. Just like you'd plan ahead for any other event. We're the big time now. We've got to act like it. GO MEAN GREEN
  21. Remember these ? I used to see some that said "NORTH TEXAS" and some that said "MEAN GREEN" in rhinestones. Dr. Battile always wore one. Well now, I can't find them. I called the bookstore and Voertman's. No luck. Anybody got a source ?
  22. It's GREEN. Finally, somebody's thinking.
  23. That's it. I'm sold. I'd like to buy a GMG shirt. Where ? How much ?
