  1. Hey, here in Euless, we're supposed to be sitting on top of that gas field called the "Barnett Shale". But, I don't think it's any coincidence that there's a Pancho's right in the middle of where that "natural gas" is supposed to be.
  2. By reading this article, you can see the names of some Euless Trinity O-Linemen that need to be recruited by North Texas. The Trinity coach, Steve Lineweaver, has mentioned how much opportunity Dodge has opened for area players at NT. These guys need to be recruited, and NT needs the talent. Euless Trinity O-Line
  3. It's always good to see a home town favorite like Vittatoe doing well for himself; honestly, he's a good all around guy, and has worked very hard to get where he is. Like you say, Trinity isn't real pass happy, but Vittatoe made opponents respect the pass, which helped the running game work. Trinity coach Lineweaver knows you have to pass to win championships. I thought these game highlights from last weekend, Trinity vs. previously unbeaten Irving MacArthur, give a good idea of Trinity's offense this year. I was skeptical of a small guy like Samir Baker (20) at RB, but the guy can find the end zone! Here's the link; type "76040" for the zip code. Trinity vs Irving MacArthur, Oct. 20, 2007
  4. You guys make me proud to hold a geography degree from North Texas, (B.A., 1977), and a Rand McNally Road Atlas (1993). Dwayne Taylor
  5. Well, I think there's been some improvement in QB and defensive play, areas that have been much discussed. Honestly, I'm of the school of "Let's get some offensive line muscle in here". I did feel I took some criticism for advocating a recruiting pipeline to Euless Trinity for that kind of talent (like "I'm sure our coaches are looking at all the schools"). Simply speaking, UNT needs some hosses on the offensive line. I'm never sure offensive linemen attract as much attention as other players; Euless Trinity, now as in years past, has some good ones.
  6. At this time, I'm advocating improving the kicking game by whatever means it takes. The kicking game has always been important, but this year's rule changes, not to mention the close games decided by field goals this year, make the kicking game increasingly important. Haven't some pro teams used "kicking consultants"? I'm generally opposed to consultants of all kinds, but if it would help, I think it should be considered; the sooner the better.
  7. It's good to keep some perspective. At one point as an undergrad at then NTSU, I was foolishly attempting a music major. Fortunately, my piano teacher pointed out to me, "Dwayne, you're just not getting it, but our best students can only get jobs playing in lounges in Las Vegas. And then, some who don't make it will jump from the 6th floor of Kerr Hall." Years later, I'm ok with being a geographer, and do enjoy singing in the church choir.
  8. I just thought this was an interesting perspective from the recap of today's OU at Iowa State game. The link is interesting, but I like this quote, "Under first-year coach Gene Chizik, Iowa State took a major step forward in defeat. The Cyclones had been outscored 133-37 in their first three Big 12 games, falling to Texas 56-3 at home last week." Of course, OU went on to win 17-7, but not without a fight from a 1-7 team, led by a coach who was defensive coordinator at UT when they won the mythical national championship in 2004. I've actually been so far out in the North Carolina mountains in the last week that I could only read the sparsest tidbits of football coverage, but it does seem like in the last two games, we've (1.)Won our 1st game this year and in the Dodge era, (2.) Found a fine young quarterback, and (3.) Started seeing MAJOR improvements in defensive play. Am I so wrong? Of course I still want to see UNT coaches recruiting some offensive line talent from the Euless Trinity Trojans, but I'm a homer, and think these are some young men who have improved steadily this season. 9. Excellent find. I loved this quote: "Coach Mack Brown credits Young for helping chill him out and for removing what felt at times like a fear of failure. His personality infused everything about the Longhorns. Daniel elicits very similar praise in Columbia." I never had any real doubts of Coach Dodge's ability to take UNT to great success, mostly based on what Daniel has done for Mizzu. I'm just hoping they can beat OU; they may be as good as any D1 school in the country right now.
  10. Dude! That was brutal, but wicked good...
  11. Euless Trinity roster If anyone has an "in" with the radio announcer, and want to suggest ways to improve Polynesian pronunciation, let him know about all the Tongan football players at Euless Trinity. They could watch a game at Pennington field some Friday night; maybe the Trinity announcer could give them some tips; none of the announcers at the neutral playoff sites can pronounce their names well. Check out the link to the varsity roster at the top of this post; the Tongan names start showing up in the 30's.
  12. Again, not to harp on the kicking game, but I hope the 42 yard limit increases, through coaches mentoring the kickers or whatever. After the Cowboys game last Monday night, I was thinking back a few years when Jerry Jones talked about not spending money, draft picks, etc. on kickers...glad he changed his mind.
  13. I couldn't agree more; if 2 points was needed , it's just a judgment call whether to try it earlier or later. That's what head coaches are paid for. Making the one point conversion isn't guaranteed, as was already proven earlier in the same game. I read that a missed extra point kick by USC was what turned out to be the margin of victory when Stanford won Saturday. I agree with what I just wrote, Dwayne Taylor
  14. I think it's something reasonable to consider; I've started wondering if some of the major upsets happening this year are partly a result of the change in the kicking rules. There were some big runbacks in this weekend's games.
  15. I did advocate looking around for kickers to recruit and perhaps use a scholarship on during the off season. I do think the kicking game needs attention; missed field goals were big in the FAU game as well as last night (also for FAU against South Florida yesterday). Perhaps it could be done in a positive way; I've read somewhere that Dodge has a field goal kicking drill to simulate the stress of an actual game. If our kicker is not on scholarship, perhaps the possibility of getting one for him or whoever the kicker is for next year should be considered. Not to sound too high schoolish, but the Euless Trinity football program put on a variety entertainment night for the players and coaches to entertain each other as a unity building exercise (the Trinity assistant coaches did their best "Backstreet Boys" imitation. I would suggest any positive way to relieve the stress (which can be a big problem for kickers) these players and coaches must be feeling.
  16. Seeing Dodge being quoted in the DMN today saying Vizza is the quarterback for the rest of the season is quite encouraging to me. In this system especially, it's important to have a quarterback know he's the man! I don't think Dodge enjoyed playing under Darrell Royal with his "when you pass, 3 things can happen and 2 of them are bad" philosophy. I do think many could agree with another Royal saying; "A confused team can't play aggressively". Dwayne Taylor
  17. Hey, they're having college games on Friday as well; and people wonder why things are falling apart.
  18. I think if we had more speed on defense, the interceptions we had when struggling offensively would have been returned for scores.
  19. Hey, we've got some tough guys here in Euless. The first thing I realized when I moved here was "I'm not gonna whip anybody's a** in this neighborhood". I'm glad to watch the hard hitting from the stands!
  20. I really like the "no head lock" idea.
  21. My wife's side of the family has deep roots in Utah (yes, they're LDS, for the most part). I wish DD and the family I've met in Logan well! We could stay busy here focusing on our own problems!
  22. I've always heard head coaches and quarterbacks get too much blame and too much credit; I certainly have to think they won last night as a team and lost the week before as a team.
  23. I just thought this might be slightly amusing. Posted: 10/01/2007 12:54 PM Do our coaches even see what Doc and others are seeing? -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- johnnyo53 wrote: “LET ME REITERATE- WE ARE A VERY BAD FOOTBALL TEAM. BUT WE DON'T HELP OURSELVES WITH AN OFFENSE THAT REFUSES TO CAPITALIZE ON A DEFENSE THAT FINALLY SHOWED UP AND ACTUALLY MADE SOME INSPIRED STOPS. ARIZONA STATE IS VERY BEATABLE, THEY PLAYED LIKE THEY WERE EITHER LOOKING PAST US OR DIDN'T WANT TO WIN. WITH THE EXCEPTION OF OUR DEFENSE, BOTH TEAMS HAD THE INTENSITY LEVEL OF A SCRIMMAGE FOR MOST OF THE GAME. HARBAUGH'S PLAYCALLING AND OFFENSIVE PLAN (APPARENTLY) WERE REMINISCENT OF WALT HARRIS- MISSING ONLY A QUICK KICK. APPARENTLY HE WAS COMMITTED TO RUNNING THE BALL BETWEEN THE TACKLES. BRADFORD ACTUALLY LOOKED READY TO PLAY, BUT HE KEPT SHUTTLING HIM OUT- MOORE IS USELESS OUT THERE, AND SHERMAN IS STILL DOGGING IT WHEN HE'S NOT THE PRIMARY. OSTRANDER- WELL- PRITCHARD MUST BE REALLY BAD IF YOU STAY WITH OSTRANDER THE WAY WE ARE. OUR O-LINE GAVE OSTRANDER SOME DECENT PASS PRO, BUT WAS INCONSISTENT, AND OSTRANDER STARTED GETTING HAMMERED. THEY COULDN'T RUN THE BALL INSIDE AT ALL, YET HARBAUGH INSISTED ON WASTING SERIES TRYING. HOW MANY 3 & OUTS CAN YOU HAVE UNTIL YOUR DEFENSE CAVES? AND DON'T TELL ME THEY CAN'T GET OPEN, THEY DID AGAINST OREGON WHICH HAD MUCH BETTER SPEED... OUR SPECIAL TEAMS, OTHER THAN THE LS AND PUNTER: UNBELIEVABLY ABYSMAL. GIVING UP WAY TOO MANY YARDS ON COVERAGES, AND OBVIOUSLY DON'T BELIEVE THEY'LL BREAK A RETURN, AND ARE DOGGING IT. OUR DEFENSE? PLAYED WELL ENOUGH TO KEEP US IN IT FOR A LONG TIME, SNYDER HAD A GREAT GAME, MCNALLY A HUGE DISAPPOINTMENT, HE PLAYED LIKE HE WAS AFRAID OF #26 ALL NIGHT, DIDN'T COMMIT TO TACKLING, AND MISSED HUGE NUMBERS OF TACKLES. GREAT IMPROVEMENT IN #14- HE WAS IN POSITION ALL NIGHT. TACKLING IN GENERAL STILL A HUGE PROBLEM. THE DOC GOT UP AND LEFT THE GAME IN DISGUST WHEN HARBAUGH WENT FOR "THE" FIELD GOAL. WE ALL KNOW WHICH ONE. IT WAS EVERY BIT AS GUTLESS AND DUMB AS ANYTHING HARRIS DID LAST YEAR. SOMETIMES AN ENTIRE COACHING STAFF CAN HAVE A RELAPSE, YOU SAW IT LAST NIGHT STARTING AT THE TOP. THEY HAVE TO TIGHTEN DOWN THE SPECIAL TEAMS COVERAGES AND INSPIRE THE RETURNS- FIELD POSITION IS KILLING US. TAKE WHAT THE OTHER TEAM IS GIVING YOU, LAST NIGHT WE WERE ACTUALLY RUNNING TO THE PERIMETER PRETTY WELL, BUT INSIDE WAS SHUT DOWN EARLY AND OFTEN. WHEN YOU'RE DOWN 24 IN THE 4TH, AND INSIDE THE OTHER TEAM'S TERRITORY, IT'S 4 DOWN TERRITORY, WHAT HAVE YOU GOT TO LOSE WHEN YOUR OFFENSE IS ALREADY GOING 3& OUT EVERY, OR EVERY OTHER SERIES. WHAT HAPPENED TO THE TIGHT ENDS? JUST WHAT WAS THE OFFENSIVE GAME PLAN LAST NIGHT? WHY CAN'T WE AT LEAST TACKLE OR IMPROVE IN TACKLING FROM WEEK TO WEEK? DOC IS PISSED OFF.” ================================================== I missed the game but this post says it all. Maybe Harbaugh will read it too? Sounds like some tunnel vision is going on where we're forcing plays that have no chance of success but we continue trying them anyway. Tough to know for sure. Can others give us their take on the play-calling as well? Nor was I impressed in the least with the sets. We were plenty disorganized out there. On many occasions guys didn't even know where they were supposed to be.
