  1. I like this idea, but I would like to see the new stadium lit up at night in some way ALL the time. Fouts looks so much better since they put the back-lit advertising signs and players photos on it for all to see at night. A Giant GREEN Stadium at night would be very impressive, although half of it will be under ground level.
  2. UNT could really do something nice at that appex point near the bonefire site at the intersection of I35E and W. Maybe a tall clock tower with a top that resembles the Administration Building's clock tower to light green.
  3. From the NT Daily: Burgess: access key Representative speaks on Denton transportation Tyler Tamplin Staff Writer January 24, 2003 U.S. Representative and NT alumnus Dr. Michael Burgess said Thursday he is unsure of further university growth with the present state of transportation in Denton. Speaking from a private hangar at Denton Municipal Airport, Burgess said the issue of university access would be "key" in his upcoming report to the U.S. Transportation and Infrastructure Committee in Washington, D.C. Recognizing NT as a major commuting port, Burgess said any transportation improvements already made were reduced in efficiency by the growth in number of vehicles. "Although the number [of vehicles] is greater, there are still many of the same problems," he said. Burgess toured several Denton sites that city and university officials hoped he would recommend for federal funding in the interest of city development. The report will address several areas of transportation interests in Denton County. Areas mentioned were access to the Eagle Point Golf Club, the condition of Interstate Highway 35 in Denton County, and money for a rail system to connect the city with Metroplex development. Burgess added that his was purely a "preliminary" visit and would not give details as to the potential amount of money or work plans for the areas. Dr. Norval Pohl, NT president, said that although federal funding would provide no financial relief for students, they would have an "indirect benefit" from decreased highway driving time to campus.
  4. I still believe that UNT's stadium's biggest marketing advantage is it's location by I-35. It's a giant billboard waiting for some company to slap it's name upon it. Not many college stadiums get 100,000 vehicles a day passing right by it. UNT itself is not even taking full advantage of it's fortune, we should have BIG neon GREEN lights at night lighting up NORTH TEXAS on either Fouts or the new stadium. Such a waste of great location.
  5. I heard it on the radio broadcast...very nice!
  6. JJ will not let him mess up long. After the technicals the other night, I think one was Unjel trash-talking, he said he would take care of those problems quick!
  7. I think JJ can get his program worked out in fairly short time. If we had a healthy Hopkins and Roniger we would have won these last couple games. Remember, it was just in 2000-01 that under Trilli we lost 15 straight SBC games to finish that season at 4-24. JJ won't let that happen, even with all walk-ons playing.
  8. "Battlefield Earth" with John Travolta. What was he thinking; was he trying to ruin his career doing this movie?? It's so bad, I've never seen it all...and never will.
  9. Yes, I'm sorry I missed that. I did see K. Lyons at the game Saturday talking with Jimmy Gales in the stands. It was also great to see Tony Worrell, Bill Blakeley, Deon Hunter and many others back at The SuperPit. It was like a giant who's-who of old NT basketball there! Glad I went.
  10. I think JJ will have the men in "survival mode" and going all out. It's make or break time already.
  11. Is UNT still in the hunt for this Law School? Along with trying to start an Engineering School and begin an Athletic Complex, a Law School would be great too! All we need is $$$!
  12. Low scoring game....... OU vs. OSU game story & pic
  13. 2600 for the men, and actually about 20 Denver fans (they do exist)! I couldn't stay for the women's game so I'm not sure about their attendance.
  14. We held Denver to 26% shooting for the game, but we missed shots at the end and hit only 50% of our freethrows. It would have been a good win to build some momentum and fans with. Attendance was 2600.
  15. The SuperPit holds 10,000. The women this year hosted LSU and Indiana. UNT's men hosted TCU this season and will host Indiana in Denton next year (yes, those Indiana Hoosiers).
  16. UNT's image would really grow with an engineering school and then a law school.
  17. Today's DMN has an article about some Universities wanting to set their own tuition. It talks about a wish list local schools have for this year's funding by the Texas Legislature. One interesting item on TWU's wish list was: "Maintaining the university's independence from UNT or other state university systems". Hummm....think they've heard something or see the future writing on the wall?? The wish lists: University of North Texas: • More funding for administration of the UNT System • Debt service assistance for the construction of the new UNT Dallas campus • $4 million for UNT's new engineering college Texas Woman's University: • Maintaining the current level of financing, including special funding TWU receives for its large nursing program • Maintaining the university's independence from UNT or other state university systems
  18. Great article about Coach Blakeley. Half the fun of the games back then was watching him do something. He was a character, and it didn't hurt that his teams won 20+ games several seasons too. I'm lucky I went to NTSU when Bill Blakeley and Hayden Fry were coaching. Those were fantastic sports years for the Mean Green!
  19. UNT Notebook UNT to honor NCAA teams 01/08/2003 By Tim MacMahon / Staff Writer North Texas will honor the 1986 women’s and 1988 men’s basketball teams and former men’s coach Bill Blakeley during its doubleheader against Denver at the Super Pit on Saturday. The ’86 Lady Eagles and ’88 Mean Green are the only teams in the respective programs’ histories to make NCAA Tournament appearances. That edition of the Lady Eagles, coached by Judy Nelson, went 20-10, setting a then-school record for wins in a season and winning the Southland Conference tournament. UNT lost in the first round of the NCAA Tournament to Washington. The Mean Green, coached by Jimmy Gales, overcame a slow start to finish 17-13 and win the Southland Conference’s regular-season and tournament titles. UNT won 11 consecutive games before falling to North Carolina in the NCAA Tournament’s first round. Blakeley, who was inducted into the school’s Athletic Hall of Fame this fall, compiled a 134-85 record as the Mean Green’s head coach from 1976-83. Blakeley ranks second in school history in wins and fourth in winning percentage. Three of UNT’s four 20-win seasons came during Blakeley’s tenure. Foot injury sidelines Smith Center/forward Will Smith has developed an infection on the bottom of his foot that will sideline him indefinitely, coach Johnny Jones said Tuesday. "We’re disappointed because we thought he would be back," Jones said. "Now we’re not sure how long it will be before he gets back." Smith went to the emergency room late Sunday night because of extreme pain. Trainer Brad Anderson said Smith has reacted well to antibiotics and could be back on the court in a week. Center Justin Barnett, who did not make the Mean Green’s recent road trip because of a sore back, is participating in light conditioning drills. Anderson said he hoped Barnett could practice by Thursday. Point guard Scott Roniger, who underwent surgery Thursday to repair a torn lateral meniscus in his knee, will be out longer than the two weeks that was originally anticipated. Anderson said Roniger, who is currently rehabilitating in his hometown of Metarie, La., is targeting the Jan. 23 trip to New Orleans as his return date. UNT not on local television Saturday’s basketball doubleheader against Denver will be broadcast as part of the Sun Belt’s package with ESPN Regional television. However, the games will not be carried by any station in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Player of the week The Mean Green squeezed every possible ounce of effort out of swingman Chris Davis in the double-overtime win Sunday afternoon at Florida Inter-national. Davis also provided plenty of production in the Sun Belt opener. Playing all 50 minutes, Davis had season highs of 27 points on 8-of-11 shooting and eight assists. He also added nine rebounds in the Sun Belt Conference opener for both schools. Davis also played well in the loss Thursday at Auburn, scoring 25 points on 8-of-16 shooting. For his efforts on the road trip, he is the Denton Record-Chronicle’s University of North Texas Player of the Week. TIM MACMAHON can be reached at 940-381-9572. UNT 7-day schedule SATURDAY: Denver at men’s basketball, 1 p.m.; Denver at women’s basketball, 3:30 p.m.
  20. Ah yes, the Holiday Inn along I-35 in Denton. When I was in 9th and 10th grade in high school we lived in Denton in Southridge across I-35 from the Holiday Inn. We used to sneak across the freeway and swim for free all day. Those were great times! Nice pool, or it used to have anyway.
  21. I recall hearing that one of the players had a grandmother pass recently that they were very close to, it may have been her.
  22. The first SBC televised conference game and there might be 100 people in the stands at UNO, it really looks like a practice game that nobody cares about coming to. Really, why couldn't they show the NMSU @ ULL game first that was played the other night? I'm sure there were many more fans there, and wait to show UNO when their students return from the holidays. Poor TV planning.
  23. and another list........ another college board list
  24. Official attendance was 849. NT's shooting percentage was around .243, very poor. Perhaps youth was some explanation, and perhaps the opponent had something to do with the poor shooting too, but when only 18 out of 70-something shots go in, there's something very wrong. NT vs. LSU Boxscore
