  1. Best quote. CAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!
  2. Can't really dwell in the past with UNT football. It has never been consistent or successful. There have been high points, but those are the outliers. Those are the facts and it hurts me to say it. A move to Conference USA in the Dickey years would have been ideal. Conference USA today is a shadow of its past and is more similar to the Sunbelt Conference that we left. But we have league games in Texas now. Most fans would like us in the American Athletic Conference. I don't agree. At least not right now. The American Athletic ( the Conference USA conference of yesteryear) is a G5 conference with quality opponents but it still isn't much better than our current conference. At the end of the day we all want better for our team and curse the mis-steps of the past that are beyond our control. For now if we are just competitive in Conference USA and against middle of the road P5 teams it would be a huge improvement. Go Mean Green Beat Iowa!
  3. I believe the article highlights creativity not gimmicks. We aren't looking to emulate Millsaps College, other than garner some of the ingenuity that comes with a young, hungry AD. We have a beautiful facility, we have scholarship players, we are in a large market, we have a large student body, we have a large alumni base, we have a losing football team. Some part of that doesn't match up! Like it or not it is someone's fault!!!!!
  4. Still would like to see a crowd fund approach for those of us who want to give back but haven't made our first million yet! Strength in numbers!
  5. I actually laughed out loud! Well played sir. Well played!
  6. I am advocating installing it in the spring after we lose every game this season! The read option still requires guys we have proven we cannot recruit. Something has to be done. Our offense is awful.
  7. I transferred to UNT in 1994 to play men's soccer. Program was cancelled 2 days after arriving in Denton. Nevertheless the 1994 season was magical. I was hooked thereafter. However being a UNT football fan in masochism at its purest!
  8. This game is coming at a bad time. I fear it may cause irreparable damage to the confidence of the team. Not to mention the fanbase. It sets up a perfect storm of despondency for homecoming. To lose is one thing, but to get beat at home by a FCS opponent in front of less than 10K fans is a catastrophe. At least we have the Dallas Cowboys, oh wait.....
  9. Perhaps it is time for North Texas to adopt the Triple Option Offense. We have had little success in developing a pro-style QB and seem to enjoy a run first mentality. Embracing the triple option could enable us to recruit athletes from a larger pool of potentially overlooked kids. Georgia Tech and Navy are both triple options schools who are mainstays on the bowl circuit. If a service academy can be successful with that system shouldn't it at least be on the table for discussion. I even believe Paul Johnson, the coach of Georgia Tech, has a series of videos and seminars explaining how to implement the system.
  10. I don't want to throw this season away, it is only week 3. We have losses to a much improved SMU team who gave a top 5 opponent fits last night and a Rice team that should have beaten a Texas team that is starting to find its identity. Next week isn't going to be easy, if it were Iowa would pay us the money to come to their place. We looked better yesterday than we did against SMU. We have to look at the positive side of this. We may be competitive in league play. Right now there is just too much unknown. I am not happy, but I refuse to be despondent. Don't be too hard on the students. UNT has never had rabid fans. Those aren't the people who attend UNT. They attend TAMU. If we win then we will see an increase in student participation/awareness. Students want to have fun, unload stress and make bad decisions. If you can recall, most of us were just like that. However I do believe an increase in an athletic fee is warranted. Don't claim Denton is disinterested. This town is a juggernaut waiting to be unleashed. But it will remain dormant until we win. No one puts time, effort and energy into a losing cause. I would love an AD from UNT who has a marketing/sales background. We have an image problem. I don't know how to fix it, but I am sure there is someone out there who can! Go Mean Green!
  11. Regent Chairman: This is not a football vocational school. It's an institute for higher learning. Coach Winters: Yeah, but when was the last time 80,000 people showed up to watch a kid do a damn chemistry experiment? Why don't you stick the bow-tie up your ass? Quotes from the movie The Program. No truer statement was ever said about a college football team's role in the reputation of a University. Till the University realizes that a winning program is the greatest representative for the school then we will be having these discussions next year, and the year after....
  12. When you accept mediocrity you get mediocrity. In 1994 when I arrived as a transfer student to UNT it seemed that we were trying to break apart from our peers at SHSU, SFA, and Southwest Texas State. There was a concerted effort to establish a new identity for the university. It appears we are still trying. At times I wonder if we were too bold or have we just been hindered by small minded people. The upgrade from Fouts to Appogee seemed to show an investment in our team, but without a financial investment in the entire coaching staff and leadership who will not stand for failure we will always be just one step ahead of our peers in the past. We need money but it seems we don't have the deep pocket alumni like other schools. Moreover, we don't have anyone who is clever enough to come up with a crowd fund based donation system where a large group can almost take on the persona of a deep pockets alumni. I know the people on this forum do more than their part so I am preaching to the choir and lets face it; giving money to a losing program is like giving money to a junkie and thinking it is going to go to their recovery. It won't. If past behavior is an indicator than it will be wasted. Go Mean Green, against all odds, beat Rice!
  13. UNT wins 31-27. Special teams carries the day along with a defensive TD. Rice didn't protect the ball last week and will play too conservative. No way they are better at playing conservative than UNT.... I realize that this is based loosely on fact, but the truth doesn't have any place in a healthy relationship!
  14. Is the playcalling awful because the QB is bad or is the QB so bad the play book is limited? Chicken or the egg. Either way we get screwed so I guess it doesn't really matter. Sorry for the negativity. I am still somewhere in the 5 stages of grief after the loss....
  15. I totally agree. There was a lot of green and the SMU faithful should have been upset about that but were generally nice. If anyone was surprised with seeing the SMU boat shoe frat boys and their antics then you live under a rock. It is SMU!!! But to be fair, I was in a fraternity at UNT almost 20 years ago, not sure I would have made the best example for visiting fans! Home fans, anyone! At the end of the day we lost. Badly. They can "scoreboard" us all day. Considering how many fans we brought into their house I saw very little taunting. We damn near invaded and then got beat. We are all mad, but we need to look in the mirror before we say a thing about SMU. The SMU law student tried to pick a fight w/ 2 mid 1990's era UNT football players, who incidentially were the biggest men in the section. Thank god the UNT football alumni are adults and contacted the police. I fear that kid would have been seriously injured. Band looked and sounded great. I was never in a band, I don't understand why it matters if they wear shorts and polo shirts. Forgive my ignorance.
  16. Lance looked great. Never say die attitude. Loved it!
  17. I guess much has changed in Texas High School football. In early 1990's when I played we respected/feared the coaches. None of the guys I played with would have dreamed to attack an official. However, I don't think it should ruin their lives, but some responsibility and accountability are in order.
  18. I wish I had a solid comeback, but I am not sure we have a solid QB... We do have better looking women though!
  19. Wasn't that almost the exact situation last year? There was a small difference, UNT was the winner! Nice try on bating us with the North Texas State University line. Even smarter paying 100K for a 10K education. Smart move going to SMU. Real smart.
  20. Cougar King, I would wait till you get past Tennessee Tech. Two P-5 teams have been beaten by FCS teams. Sure they are the cellar teams of those conferences but it isn't like U of H is a blue blood either! The entire town of Houston has a culture of losing. You have had some great teams who have gotten close though... Before you say the Rockets, I could care less about the NBA.
  21. My concern is how UNT handles the game. Adjustments to game speed, penalties/false starts, defensive holding, etc. Lots of teams are coming out flat the first game. MSU had their hands full with Western Michigan. TCU was in a fight with Minnesota. Stanford may lose to Northwestern. We have no idea who we are in a real game. SMU has some to like and a lot to work on. We are a total unknown, even to ourselves. The first week bye may be the 12th man for the Mustangs. It doesn't benefit the Mean Green!
  22. Well said. It isn't appropriate to trash 18-22 year old men. It is far better to crush the 50 year old men.
