Michael Kelly said American Athletic Conference members have held several meetings with commissioner Mike Aresco over the past week. TAMPA — American Athletic Conference members have spoken about the possibility of adding schools left behind during the most recent round of conference realignment. USF athletic director Michael Kelly said Friday that he and administrators from other conference schools have been in communication with AAC commissioner Mike Aresco after six Pac-12 schools announced their departures for other conferences in recent weeks. The remaining Pac-12 members — Washington State, Oregon State, Cal and Stanford — would be considered among the best schools left behind by this round of realignment. Theoretically they won’t be kicking anyone out. They will form a new conference. So we will still be in the AAC but will have to backfill the teams that leave with CUSS and the Belch. Yuk!

So why are we limiting ourself to the Pac4? I have been saying all along we should go after the cream of the Mountain West schools as well. This reporter seems to agree there is some value there.

TV Contract Money/Exposure This category will not be changing at this point, but it’s still an important one because money accounts for a lot. The current AAC contract (almost $7 million per team) became the benchmark for Group of 5 media deals when they announced their new deal a year before the Mountain West. However, the contract will likely change once Cincinnati, Houston, and UCF leave. The Mountain West media deal is $270 million total, which comes out to about $4 million for the ten teams under normal circumstances (not Hawaii or Boise State), a massive upgrade from the $1.1 million in the past deal. However, more goes into the contract than just money, even though money is the bottom line, as this article explains a bit. The AAC took more money ($1 billion) for less exposure (most appearing on ESPN+). On the other hand, the MWC secured a smaller deal financially and traded being the late game on ESPN for potentially better time slots with Fox, as well as sticking with CBS Sports for their secondary game package. Another big difference is the length of the contract. The future of the remaining four Pac-12 teams is uncertain, as they could all look to stick together or some could leave to join other conferences. Stanford and Cal to AAC has now become a hot topic. There have been rumors that the Pac-12 could merge with a conference. However, according to CFB insider Jim Williams, Stanford and Cal could well go off on their own and just join another conference. Williams reckons Stanford and Cal are valuable schools for a variety of reasons, and the American Athletic Conference should add a couple more. The AAC has 14 teams, and bringing them up to 16 would make a lot of sense. Moreover, adding Stanford and Cal would allow the AAC to start broadcasting late-night games, which would increase their revenue further. Whether Stanford or Cal are interested in that move is uncertain at this time However, it makes sense for both teams to leave the Pac-12 and make the move rather than waiting to see if the Pac-12 merges with the Atlantic Coastal Conference or Mountain West Conference. Over the past decade, the American Athletic Conference has usually been the strongest of college football’s mid-major conferences, commonly known as the Group of Five. But entering the 2023 season and beyond, that may no longer be the case. The AAC was hit hard by conference realignment. Once the SEC raided Texas and Oklahoma from the Big 12, the Big 12 pivoted and added three of the AAC’s premier members — Cincinnati, Houston and UCF. Since the Big East dissolved into the AAC back in 2013, one of those three teams has won outright or had a share of the conference championship in seven of 10 seasons. On top of that, each of those programs has played in a New Year’s Six bowl game with Cincinnati even reaching the College Football Playoff. It was a major blow to the conference and its overall quality of competition.
