  3. I think those are teams in the first category: PAYING A GUARANTEE We (and SMUt) are in the second category: BUYING (Willing to play for a guarantee) The third group are teams looking for home/home games with no $ exchanged.
  4. Did UNT miss a chance to get the "Todd Dodge" of area women's high school basketball? It was funny though last night when Dale Hansen interviewed her and asked if she had "any concerns about playing on that stage?" at UTA. ............................................................................... Morrow named UTA women's basketball coach Thursday, May 17, 2007 By DAMON L. SAYLES / The Dallas Morning News ARLINGTON – Samantha Morrow considered herself "in a win-win situation." Morrow was introduced as the UT-Arlington women's basketball coach Wednesday evening. The former Mansfield Summit girls coach will take over June 1, athletic director Pete Carlon said. Morrow, 47, resigned at Summit last month to become an assistant athletic director for the Mansfield ISD. She said she was content with the position, but there was something intriguing about the UTA job. Samantha Morrow won more than 400 games coaching at Mansfield and Mansfield Summit. "People kept reminding me how much I loved kids and coaching," Morrow said. "After the phone call I got [Monday] with Pete, I had to go visit with some people and ask what they thought. "They said, 'You're crazy! You've got to do it!' I didn't get much work done in the last hour Tuesday. I just needed to think about it." Her reflections resulted in UTA hiring its eighth women's basketball coach – one with a revered high school track record. Morrow was 413-77 in 14 seasons at Mansfield (1993-2002) and Summit (2003-07) and won four consecutive UIL 5A state championships from 1999 to 2002. Carlon said Morrow hasn't signed a contract yet but has agreed in principle to coach. Terms were not disclosed, but Carlon said she has a three-year deal that includes performance incentives. Morrow earned 10 district titles, advanced to the UIL playoffs 13 times and claimed 30 or more victories in eight of her 14 seasons. She coached in her fifth state tournament in March, as Summit lost to eventual state champion Rockwall in the 5A semifinals. Carlon said Morrow was to Texas high school girls basketball as current North Texas football coach Todd Dodge was to football during his successful tenure at Southlake Carroll. "There's not a high school gym in Texas – in the country, really – that she cannot walk into and have instant credibility and respect," Carlon said. "I think that will bode well for recruiting." Morrow will replace Donna Capps, who resigned in April to accept an assistant athletic director position with the Mesquite ISD. Capps was 119-89 in seven seasons and left as the program's all-time winningest coach. Morrow called UTA a "gold mine." She inherits a team that finished 24-9 and made the NCAA Women's Tournament for the second time in three seasons. The 24 wins was a school single-season record. "I would not be coming to this program if I did not believe in it," Morrow said. "She believes UTA is a sleeping giant," added Mansfield ISD athletic director Debbie Weems, who Morrow replaced as Mansfield's coach in 1993. "There's a lot of potential here with the athletes in the area. "It's a great loss for Mansfield. Twenty years of success is walking out of our door. But on the other hand, we're very proud of her. It's a new direction for her." Twenty-nine of Morrow's former players have earned athletic scholarships, with 19 at the Division I level. Former Texas Tech standout Erin Grant, Morrow's most renowned player who is working out with the WNBA's Houston Comets, was happy – and somewhat surprised – with the move. "I didn't think she'd ever leave the high school level because I knew how much she liked teaching the kids," Grant said. "But I knew if the right opportunity came available, she'd make a great candidate." One player extremely excited about the hire was LaTosha Duffey, a 2006 Summit graduate who will be reunited with her former head coach. Morrow also coached Shalyn Martin and Tamara Simmons, who will play for UTA in the fall. "I found out [Tuesday], and it still doesn't feel real to me. I'm real excited," Duffey said. "I don't think it'll hit me until the first practice." Morrow credited Capps for building a solid program. Capps led the team to its first outright conference title last season. That success motivates Morrow for the upcoming seasons. "She started a reputation, and I want to grow it," Morrow said. "I want to win a [postseason] game. Then I want to win two, and then I want to win three. Let's step it up to another level." SAMANTHA MORROW Age: 47 Education: BS in Physical Education (Texas Wesleyan, 1981); Master's of Education (Tarleton State, 1987). Notable: Morrow was the named the 2002 national coach of the year by the National Federation of High School Coaches Association. ... Morrow's first state championship with Mansfield in 1999 capped a 38-0 season. ... The five-person selection committee included two former UTA players, Rola Ogunoye and Ashley Bobb. Both athletes played against Morrow in high school. PAST UTA COACHES Samantha Morrow becomes the eighth eighth women's basketball coach at UT-Arlington. Here's how the others fared: Coach Years Record Carla Lowery 1972-73 12-21 Jody Conradt 1973-76 43-39 Cindy Salser 1976-79 51-38 Connie Kelch 1979-89 117-172 Jerry Isler 1989-92 42-43 Mike Dean 1992-2000 115-105 Donna Capps 2000-07 119-89
  5. It looks like NT and SMUt are both on the "buying" list, ie wanting to play a road game for $$. Sad, but probably budget concerns outweigh fan support and rivalry purposes. That still doesn't explain road trips we took last year to places like Nicholls State in front of 200 people.
  6. Yes, I believe it's a combination of reasons, but at the top is Title 9, equal number of ships for men and women. If we add baseball, which I believe requires 13 men's ships then we must add lacrosse or another women's sport with 13 ships. So really we are now talking adding 26 ships, plus a baseball field and lacrosse field (or whatever sport), plus equipment, plus travel, plus paid coaches = $3-4 million startup without ever playing a game yet. Then consider a minimum $1.5-2 million per season to keep it going and within 3 years you have spent $10 million. $10 million of which could have went towards the $40 million new football stadium which would bring in the $1 million A&M game to Denton which Smut is hosting in a few years. Then you can start to build some real revenue to finance those extra sports like baseball. It's just a matter of $$ and choices with the limited amout we have. I want baseball too, but I want a new $tadium, and better conference first.
  7. If you look at quotes from recruits it most likely would be ranked: 1. coach and staff 2. early chance to play 3. location 4. facilities/opponents/TV 5. major
  8. Stanford, Jim Harbaugh, 1.5 He hasn't even coached a game yet at Stanford and is already up the scale.
  9. If JJ can land this Big man then it will be a good class. It worked out this year, but this recruiting process of waiting for leftovers from other programs seems a gamble to get what we need. Perhaps "Tic" can help secure recruits sooner?
  10. Tickets fly for NFL game in London Wed May 16, 12:10 PM ET NEW YORK (Reuters) - The first 40,000 tickets made available for the NFL's game in London were sold in 90 minutes on Wednesday, the league said. Tickets for the October 28 game between the Miami Dolphins and New York Giants were made available at first only to fans in Europe. The game, to be played at London's 90,000-seat newly rebuilt Wembley Stadium, marks the first time the NFL has played a regular season game overseas. "This is a game for hard-core fans from all over the world," Alistair Kirkwood, managing director of NFL United Kingdom, said in a statement. "Obviously the predominant number of fans will be from the UK, but there will be large numbers from the U.S. and Europe as well." The 40,000 tickets in the first batch were made available to fans randomly selected from registered ticket requests. The NFL said more than 500,000 requests were received within three days of the announcement of the game in February. Ticket sales in the United States to Giants and Dolphins fans were expected to begin within a week, with additional tickets being released in Britain next month.
  11. You could just re-read all the old "meaningful" threads. Until football practice starts in August there is little "new" football news.
  12. Didn't Univ. of Tulsa just open a new on-campus arena a couple years ago? Does the City of Tulsa really need two new arenas?
  13. The athletic site article said she just recently accepted a high school principals job? That seems like odd timing when the softball team was just eliminated last week. I do think the team improved a lot this season over last. http://www.meangreensports.com/ViewArticle...p;ATCLID=896786
  14. While an indoor practice facility would be nice someday, it doesn't add revenue like a new stadium would. We need to replace the 1952 eyesore first. I would even vote for a new baseball stadium over an indoor practice area.... http://www.tribalgrounds.com/belt/forum_en...&order=time
  15. Someone previously posted that package included basketball floor seats thus it's limited to only about 150.
  16. Full DRC Story on Josh White: ............................................................... Basketball: Mean Green lands all-state guard from Louisiana 11:28 PM CDT on Tuesday, May 15, 2007 By Brett Vito / Staff Writer When Johnny Jones took over at North Texas six years ago, he wanted to reach the point where he could recruit the top high school players in Texas and the Southwest. After adding Josh White to his latest recruiting class on Tuesday, Jones said he feels like he has finally reached his goal. White attracted the attention of several prominent programs across the country before they filled their scholarship allotment. UNT swept in and signed White, a 5-10 point guard Rivals.com ranks No. 10 on its list of the top 10 players in Louisiana in the Class of 2007. "This has been a long time coming for us," Jones said. "He is the type of player we need to be able to get from the high school ranks. This makes a statement that the success we had last year in getting to the NCAA Tournament really has helped us." White averaged 25.3 points, 7.0 assists and 4.0 steals a game last season, when he led Christian Life of Baton Rouge, La., to its second straight Class 1A state title. White was the overall MVP of the state tournament last season. In Louisiana, a state tournament MVP is named for each classification before one is selected the overall MVP. The Louisiana Sportswriters Association also named White the state's Most Outstanding Player. "I was sure that he was going to wind up at LSU or somewhere like that," Jones said. "When he didn't sign in the early period, I kept watching him. When LSU signed another guard, we went full throttle." Tulane, Long Beach State, Ball State and Loyola-Chicago all offered White a scholarship. "I felt very comfortable at North Texas, loved the facilities and liked my opportunity to come in and make an immediate impact as a freshman," White said. "North Texas came in late, four or five days before signing day, and told me that they thought I was going to sign with LSU or another major school. … I thought I was headed to Florida or USC. They both filled up their scholarships so I had to look at my options." White also named his relationship with Jones and the Mean Green's trip to the NCAA Tournament last season as factors that played a role in his decision to attend UNT. Todd Foster, the head coach at Christian Life, described White as a skilled offensive player who is equally adept at scoring and setting up his teammates. "Josh has a knack for scoring," Foster said. "He uses his body well and can score with either hand. He could have scored as much as he wanted to for us. He will do whatever it takes to win. That means more to me than anything." Foster said he saw a parade of coaches from prominent schools come to Baton Rouge to watch White play. Several of those schools didn't offer White a scholarship because of his size. "People doubt shorter kids, but he can score and run a team," Foster said. "He made 94 3-pointers for us this year and is extremely tough." Josh White is the younger brother of former Oklahoma standout Quannas White. UNT's latest recruit will join what is shaping up to be perhaps UNT's best signing class in Jones' tenure with the Mean Green. UNT has signed Brewster (N.H.) Academy guard/small forward Tristan Thompson, Midland College point guard Ryan McCoy and Mesa (Ariz.) Community College shooting guard Adam McCoy in addition to White. Texashoops rated Thompson the 18th best player in the state in the class of 2006 before he spent a year in prep school. Ryan McCoy was listed at No. 40 in the Class of 2005 before he went to junior college. Adam McCoy ranked No. 14 nationally with a 48.7 3-point field goal percentage last season at Mesa. Jones has put the class together after leading the Mean Green to a school record for wins in a season while posting a 23-11 record. UNT finished third in the Sun Belt Conference's West Division before catching fire in the league's postseason tournament, winning four straight games and the league title. UNT went on to lose to Memphis in its first appearance in the NCAA Tournament since 1988. "I am really excited to play with the other guys coach Jones is brining in," White said. "I want to help the team build on going to the NCAA Tournament last year."
  17. "This isn't the last of the UNT recruiting news for the night. Check back later for some news on a potential big man and a full story on White." How many ships do we have available?

  21. From NT history: In 1922 campus elections students chose eagles over the lion and the dragon as the school mascot. ................................................................................................................................................ ASU panel pondering nickname Pressure to drop Indians increasing By Kenneth Heard JONESBORO — A 33-member committee likely will recommend dropping “Indians” as the name of Arkansas State University sports teams, effective in 2008, to comply with NCAA guidelines, committee Chairman Jim Pickens said Monday at the panel’s first meeting. “Right now, it’s a no-brainer,” Pickens said, referring to the pending change of ASU’s team name. The Mascot Review Committee - comprising ASU faculty and staff, along with Jonesboro civic leaders - is expected to make its recommendation next month to ASU Chancellor Robert Potts. The chancellor will forward the proposal to the ASU board of trustees. If the board approves scrapping the Indians name and associated logos, the university will name another committee to come up with a new name and mascot, Pickens said. No alternative ideas surfaced at Monday’s meeting. ASU sports teams have competed as the Indians since 1931. On Aug. 5, 2005, the NCAA deemed the mascot “hostile and abusive,” along with the team names of 17 other universities and colleges that made reference to American Indians. Louisiana-Monroe, a Sun Belt Conference opponent of ASU, changed its name from Indians to Warhawks last year. Southeast Missouri State, an Ohio Valley Conference school based in Cape Girardeau, Mo., went from Indians to Redhawks. Pickens said the ASU Mascot Review Committee has three options: Ignore the NCAA rules and keep the name Indians, realizing it won’t be able to host any NCAA tournaments or events; challenge the NCAA rules in court; change the name. “It seems to me if we stay the way we are, we’ll hurt our student athletes,” said Bill Keedy, a committee member and radio announcer for ASU football games. “If we’re at the end of the battle, then so be it.” ASU first was known as the Aggies, beginning in 1911, and later went by the Gorillas and the Warriors. The school became the Indians in 1931. The university adopted “Jumpin’ Joe,” a caricature of a loincloth-clad Indian holding a scalp and tomahawk, in 1937, but changed that image to a more politically correct “Runnin’ Joe” in 1994. Three years later, ASU incorporated an Indian headdress into its logo and did away with the cartoon image. In 2003, the university reintroduced its “A-State” logo from the mid-1970s and added “Red,” a dancing creature that features toothbrush-like bristles sprouting from its head. In May 2003, ASU President Les Wyatt ignored a recommendation by the university’s Faculty Senate to do away with the Indian name and related mascot. The ASU board sided with Wyatt. “The sentiment to continue using the Indian at ASU is widespread,” Wyatt said at the time. At Monday’s meeting, most committee members indicated they favored a change, despite sentiment attached to the longstanding name. “When we first heard of this, it infuriated us,” Potts said of the NCAA ruling. “We used [indians] as a sense of honor.” Potts is no stranger to name changes. Before coming to ASU in October 2005, Potts was the chancellor of the North Dakota University System, which fields the “Fighting Sioux” in its athletic contests. North Dakota is challenging the NCAA decision and has spent $350,000 just in preparing its case, Potts said. “They’ll spend $1 million or more just to fight it,” he said. ASU Athletic Director Dean Lee said the Indian name already has had some adverse effects. The University of Wisconsin refused to schedule a football game with ASU this coming fall because of the Indian nickname, and some opponents don’t identify the ASU team by its mascot on public address systems at sporting venues, Lee said. The final straw came with a decision by the University of Illinois to forego its battle with the NCAA, Pickens said. The University of Illinois will keep its name the “IIlini,” but it will do away with its mascot and Indian imagery. “It was a wake-up call for us. Litigation is not a good option,” Potts said. The committee will meet again in June and vote on making a name change, Pickens said. This article was published Tuesday, May 15, 2007.

  25. Here's some help for you: WORDS WOMEN USE 1.) FINE: This is the word women use to end an argument when they are right and you need to shut up. 2.) Five Minutes: If she is getting dressed, this means a half an hour. Five Minutes is only five minutes if you have just been given five more minutes to watch the game before helping around the house. 3.) Nothing: This is the calm before the storm. This means something, and you should be on your toes. Arguments that begin with nothing usually end in fine. 4.) Go Ahead: This is a dare, not permission. Don't Do It! 5.) Loud Sigh: ! This is actually a word, but is a non-verbal statement often misunderstood by men. A loud sigh means she thinks you are an idiot and wonders why she is wasting her time standing here and arguing with you about nothing. (Refer back to #3 for the meaning of nothing.) 6.) That's Okay: This is one of the most dangerous statements a women can make to a man. That's okay means she wants to think long and hard before deciding how and when you will pay for your mistake. 7.) Thanks: A woman is thanking you, do not question, or Faint. Just say you're welcome. 8.) Whatever: Is a women's way of saying **** YOU! 9.) Don't worry about it, I got it: Another dangerous statement, meaning this is something that a woman has told a man to do several times, but is now doing it herself. This will later result in a man asking "what's wrong", for the woman's response refer to # 3.
