  1. Oh, okay. I'd heard of the practice but not the term. Thanks for explaining.
  2. You keep talking about the DFW market being the main attraction that got UNT into C-USA. I see why you'd think that. And yes, I do understand the concepts of "marketing" and "fan base" and all that jazz. I got my undergraduate degree at the third-largest university in this state, which happens to be in Houston. After the first season, in which I was a shy kid who only went to two games with a few friends from high school, the only game in Houston that I missed for the rest of my undergraduate career was when I attended a funeral. And that school, which had been having some pretty darn good football seasons and overall sports accomplishments, was flat shut out of the Big 12 when four former SWC schools made the move. (Was I confused? Yes. Bitter? Nah. I'm the oddball that always liked Houston's spot in C-USA better.) But my point is... By your logic, Houston should have been invited to the Big 12 instead of Baylor because the Houston television market is far more attractive than the Waco market. That obviously did not happen. Hell, SMU or TCU should have been invited instead of Baylor. Nope. Your argument in its context is invalid. This point is pretty silly. Fourth largest university in the state- just barely- with over 120 years of academics and many more than ten seasons of football. Every school has its frustrating, disappointing, maddening seasons. Those are part of the "dues" that we paid. Don't take this post as hostile. I like that UTSA has a football program. I like its spirit. I was so antsy during the first part of the Houston-UTSA game that one of my neighbors called to see what all the yelling was about. I can't believe you guys snagged Coker. But the dues... you guys just haven't paid 'em yet. And it ain't all y'all's fault that you guys got first crack at the big piece of chicken (sorry, I just couldn't resist that one, but it does fit here), but after seeing what Houston had to go through in the SWC years and UNT had to go through since I came here during the Dodge years- and knowing that longer-lived UNT fans have experienced much, much more frustration and disappointment and heartbreak than I- I'm just saying, man. Dues. Y'all haven't paid 'em. You guys were able to drive up to the window and *poof* Welcome to FBS... would you like mashed potatoes or another one of our fresh sides with that?
  3. Yup. There has been great progress in digitizing many historical documents, but there's still a long, long way to go.
  4. I think he stays here until he's done coaching- whenever that happens to be- and retires. He just makes it seem like UNT is a mission for him, more of a calling, than a coaching job. I like that about him.
  5. Hey KRAM, happy belated... Hope it was a great day for ya.
  6. *whistle* False start on the offense. Five-yard penalty; repeat the down.
  7. I like bowl season because if we're in one and there's any way at all my family can get to it, we go, and that's more fans in the stands, which is an advantage. And if the bowl game is in a place that we can't reasonably get to, or is scheduled at a bad time for us to go, I check to see if there's a program where you can sponsor someone local to go. If there is, I buy tickets and donate them. Forgive my ignorance, but..."grayshirting?"
  8. Mickey, I literally nearly choked on my drink when I read that... That's funny, right there. To get back on topic before the next person posts, it sure has been fun reading all of you guys' stories in this thread. Thanks, everybody, for sharing.
  9. I'm the "not at all" vote, because while it's true that I am not on GMG.com often at all, if I allowed myself to be, I would easily distract myself from being productive and getting work done on my thesis or other things. I don't allow myself to get too involved in any of the dozen or so forum sites that I enjoy when I'm really busy, but I do show up every so often to post and read for a few days. Then I remember that I'm supposed to be doing something else and retreat back into the library to read more microfilm. (See what I did there?)
  10. untjim1995, I'm gonna disagree with you on the "not one other school in Texas would have this issue." UH absolutely did when I was in school- constantly- and again in the late 90s. And when John and Rebecca Moores made a very, very large donation (sometime around 1992?), there was plenty of debate about how that would best be allocated; luckily, some of that donation came with instructions from the donors. I am not as connected at this moment with current campus and alumni sentiment there, quite frankly because I have had my head in my current school and my thesis, but while I can tell that support for the athletic program has improved dramatically over time, it would not surprise me one bit for the "academics versus athletics" argument to pop up again. And now... Meeting time... *stands up* Hello, my name is Rushn, and I use microfilm... Some sources for my thesis just haven't been converted into digital media yet. I have had more contact with library staff at UNT over the past one year than I did in my entire undergraduate endeavor at UH. We have some fantastic library personnel and I cannot thank the Inter-Library Loan office and our departmental research advisor enough for putting up with me. I support our athletics and our library. I'll bet our administration does, too.
  11. I like seeing all these folks mention Houston. The fans for both schools travel well to those games, and I know for a fact that lots of Houston fans who came up last time really were impressed with Apogee. That matchup makes things awkward for my family for a day, but it's fun. A military academy would be cool, but if I can be a spoiled brat for a moment, I would rather not see Air Force uniforms on the other side of the field. I got tired of Houston playing them a while back... It was 3 times in 2 years, or 4 times in 3 years. One year, we played them in the regular season and in the bowl game in Fort Worth. Which I believe was the second year in a row we played them in that bowl game. Yes, I am aware that North Texas is not Houston and this is all hypothetical, which is why I qualified this with the "spoiled brat" comment. And to the person who mentioned Tulane... Yup, hello, that one's all about the away city. New Orleans is always a road trip my family will make if it's feasible for us.
  12. My husband and I met in college someplace else and got married after graduation. I saw him through his advanced degrees and he got a teaching job at UNT. Now it's my turn, as I'm in grad school at UNT and love it. Our kids go to Denton schools and we have enjoyed living in this community. We have been season ticketholders for basketball since we've lived here, and the only time we aren't at a home football game at Apogee is when we've made a road trip to our undergraduate alma mater for a game there. In the dying days of the Southwest Conference, after Arkansas split and everyone else was solidifying plans for After Death, there was this one tiny little voice emanating from the southeast portion of the state, "Why can't we let North Texas in and keep this thing going?!?!?" Yeah... that was me. I ended up not only seeing the last-ever football game of the SWC- I also worked at it, selling programs and renting stadium seats. Programs! Chairbacks!
  13. That's such a personal question for me to ask some bird I don't know very well.
  14. What kind of quiche? I find it kinda amusing that the dude baked quiche this week, while the dudette (which would be me) made bacon-wrapped meat loaf.
  15. Huh. They sure did. 10-7. MTSU 24, FIU 0 at the half ECU 21, Tulsa 10 at the half
  16. Bummed that we can't get this game on tv. We were at the tailgate from 3:30 am cooking and just had to get out of there before we fell over from exhaustion. If we'd known we weren't gonna be able to watch it in tv at all, I could've convinced the crew to stay for at least the first half.
  17. Didn't see RV. Ernie left in the 2nd half, shaking his head rather disgustedly.
  18. Nope. Started college and played ball at Houston; transferred to and graduated from Tech, but didn't play there.
  19. Saw him wandering around the tailgate today. I like the previous Scrappy's look, but dirty, smelly and molting had to go. This one would be okay if they'd put a jersey on him, I think.
  20. Kansas State over Tech 49-26. UTSA and Tulane tied at 7 with 9:42 left in the game. Tulsa 10, ECU 14 with 6:44 remaining in the 2nd qtr. FIU 0, MTSU 17 with 6:44 left in the 2nd qtr. Marshall destroyed UAB 56-14. La Tech and Southern Miss start at 6pm.
  21. Great coach, great guy. Glad to have him with our program.
