  1. There are consequences to actions....being in the wrong place at the wrong time can bring consequences and making the wrong decision can bring consequences. It seems today that taking responsibility for one's own actions is rare. Today it appears with lots of folks that they are "entitled" to do what they want because they have some form of celeb status. That goes for college athletes too....if you play college sports you represent your school...you have a responsibility to act properly and that means not placing yourself in situations where "trouble comes looking for you"....Life "ain't" fair and you don't "get" respect, you earn it! Get real here folks, it is not a "right" to play college sports. Get in a situation...convicted or accused...and you just might find yourself suspended until it is all sorted out. Just as a point of reference, my kid played for one of the service academies, and the team rules were even tougher than for the rest of the academy population. You want to play at the academy...you darn well better follow the rules...no excuses! Seemed to me that it taught my son a great deal about living up to your responsibilities. Yep, he was an athlete, but because he was, he was expected to represent his academy in a positive way AT ALL TIMES! Seems fair to me.
  2. Not so fast there sport...the cost of travel for a baseball squad IN TEXAS would be more than for soccer out of state given the number of players, equipment and the number of games played. Plus Tulsa and New Mexico have Men's D-1 squads and they are not THAT far away...go east a bit and you find plenty. Let's see, the soccer team would play about 10 (maybe) away games a year...baseball...20-30...let's add all that up before you count the change. If UNT started men's soccer, I would think some other schools like Baylor, Rice, TCU, etc. might bring it back...even UTA and UT-San Antonio, UT-El Paso, etc. can be on the radar screen.....And, let's see...add a men's baseball field and all the annual cost of upkeep. I think, if memory serves me well, that we already have a nice soccer complex that we could better utilize...Hmmmmmmmm...let's keep adding the $$$$$ vs. baseball...it isn't all in the travel budget, sport. But, you don't have to worry....baseball is on the way...Men's soccer is only a dream at this point...and, remind me...what women's sport are we adding so Men's baseball can get started...that's a real question...I really don't know how we can do men's baseball and still handle Title IX...are we using up any "space" we have under Title IX with baseball??????? If you know...let me know...
  3. In case you haven't noticed...the DD era is OVER! Can we stop talking about the guy please???? Let's look forward to the TD era, and talk about that...give UNT $1mm and you can name what you want...Fine by me. And, so sorry about Andrew Smith, but, can we move on from that too? It was a tragedy for sure, but it too is in the past...we need to remember Andrew, but let's move on....not trying to be insensitive here or hurt anyone's feelings (wouldn't want to do that), but let's honor Andrew by winning some football games and bringing Mean Green football back to respectability...where it rightly deserves to be. Let's look forward folks...I am tiring of this "bacward stuff" that comes up time and time again. Too much positive to look forward to...bring it on!
  4. I think his squad will be prepared better than any team we have seen in the recent past...and, he'll be thinking it's an honor for OU that they got to play UNT.
  5. Lamar Hunt was a CLASS ACT all the way around...even if he was a big SMU supporter. I met Lamar Hunt one morning at around 5:00AM in the back of a pick-up truck. We were volunteers at a youth soccer tournament in McKinney (his son and mine played within the same soccer club, but on different aged teams at the time), and the call came out to help put nets up for the days games. I jumped in the back of a pick-up and there was one other guy there volunteering. I introduced myself and thanked him for helping....he held out his hand and said only "I'm Lamar Hunt". Couldn't believe it...one of the richest guys in the world, riding in the back of a pick-up volunteering at 5:00AM to put up soccer nets at a youth soccer tournamnent. PRICELESS! But, that pretty much says what Lamar Hunt was all about....we need some more Lamar Hunts in this world.
  6. Attended my first home game in 1966. Seen too many to count, and have no way of really knowing for sure, but I do remember some memorable...and some not so memorable times...I would say I been to 20 or so away games...those are a bit easier to remember when you throw in the UT games. I'm like greenjoe...about the only away conference games I've attended were at UTA when they had a team. However, am riding the Exes bus to OU and should be at the SMU game too (schedule permitting). GO MEAAN GREEN!
  7. I totally agree. We should send our promotions staff...do we HAVE a promotions staff???...to the Desperados to talk with them and get some ideas. The few AFL games I have attended have been fun and very family friendly. When we were in Denver for Jason Ball's game, the entire team came out after the game and stayed around for over an hour signing autographs for kids, etc. It was a hoot and reminded me of how much fun it was to attend the old American Football League games with the Dallas Texans at the Cotton Bowl when I was a kid.
  8. It's a sad day for the Mean Green if we offered this kid a scholarship. Won't say much for our program either. Got to see where this one ends up after all the dust settles.
  9. Jason ball...great kid...super kicker. He deserves a chance for an NFL tryout this year. Sure hope he gets an opportunity. He has a "leg" more than good enough for the NFL. We'll see if he gets the chance...also...he can punt. You just can't punt in Arena Ball, so he doesn't get the chance to show what he can do when it comes to punting. My wife and I went to Denver to see him play earlier this year...great time, great kid....priceless!
  10. Come on up the the Denton Chapter's Mixer on the 18th of July. We won't "check ID's"...I promise. See what the Denton Chapter is up to in an effort to build membership and participation. I am sure the Exes can tell you how/who to contact regarding the Dallas Chapter. Seems I have seen some "stuff" from them. Have you checked the Exes official web site to get Chapter info?
  11. As one can see...of few of "us" have fallen prey to the "PC mind set".....and so it starts! Whatever floats your boat, but just remember to give everyone a trophy at the end of the season. No hurt feelings you know. Don't want anyone to grow up with a bad self image! And the sarcasm flows...........
  12. GREAT! Glad to hear you signed up! The Denton Exes are planning a MIXER on July 18th at 6PM at the Athletic facility..."COME ON DOWN" and enjoy the meeting and meet some of your fellow Exes. The Sink Navy T-Shirts will be on-sale, there will be door prizes and refreshments...AND...a guest speaker which should be good. Hope to see you there...I'll be there!
  13. Glad to hear you are getting some response to the flag question. That's a start. I was told once that we "couldn't do it" on the square because the flags would get stolen! Ouch! Not true...I hope. I hope to get a flag myself and fly it at home on game days and special event days for the University. If we at least start, others may follow. Thanks for taking the lead in this "ShopMeanGreen". Please keep us posted on your progress and when flags might be available.
  14. This is what it comes too when "every one gets a tropghy at the end of the season" mentality takes over our culture. Wouldn't want to hurt anyone's feelings now would we? So, just who gets to say what is and what is not "offensive"? I have NEVER been asked! How about you? You know "Sooners" is not a "kind" word...it was meant to indicate those who cheated and went ahead of the "official start" of the Oklahoma Land Rush. Maybe the folks with ancestors who followed the rules of the land rush in Oklahoma should sue OU to get them to change their nickname. What do you think??? GIVE ME A BREAK...GET OVER IT PEOPLE. And, oh, I forgot...only "some" people can be accused of "saying the wrong thing"...other folks seem to get a free pass. Gee!
  15. The ratings were bad because no one cares about pro basketball any longer. A bunch of overpaid cry babies. What an absolutely boring game it has become. Did not watch 5 min. total of any of the final games with San Antonio, but am glad to see the Spurs win. I don't think any of them were arrested this year on a gun violation were they? The NBA needs more David Robinsons to bring it some class and to show folks that NBA stars can do something more in the off-season (and during the season) than get arrested, start fights on the court, etc., etc. O.K., so I am not a pro basketball fan. Could you tell?
  16. It's not just Denton's support...what about the poor and POOER support from UNT itself?????? Where are the students???? Where are the professors, administrators, etc., etc.???? These folks either attend the University or make their living from being employed by the University...where are they???? They do not even support the University enough to join the Exes in any great numbers. Hard to believe that...if I was a UNT grad and got my paycheck from UNT and would darn sure be an active member of the Exes and Mean Green Club. Thatw ay I could support various areas of the University...not just sports or just academics. I know many staff and faculty who DO support the University and are Exes members and do but season tickets (and attends games), but that is the exception...not the rule. And, for me...I am pretty darn tired of looking across at the "student" section at all the empty seats at both football and basketball games. What's up with that????? Come on...let's find out what we can do about that too. How about let's get some UNT flas out around town...especially on the square...when UNT plays at home....at least that might be a start...ever been to some of the Big 12, SEC, etc. towns on games days????? Denton needs to look like that! Part of the problem is that we (UNT) IN THE PAST has seemed to have an inferiority complex...we were the "communter school", the "music school", we were the "counter-culture school", etc., etc. where it was cool to not attend games, not openly support the school, etc. It's time we quit apologizing for anything and started letting everyone know that we are UNT....an emerging research institution with high quality academic and athletic programs...we should take second place to NO ONE and we should act like it! Me for one, am proud of being a two-time graduate of UNT! And...I let people know it!
  17. Got my "points sheet" too...interesting. Glad to see we are initiating something like this, but it is interesting to me...I don't recall any sell-outs at UNT games in the last few years....like say 20 plus years (some close calls, but no sell-outs)....and don't recall there being any cahllenge to get away tickets...the OU tickets are tough because they give so few to us...the visitor seats at OU are BAD and limited for everyone...hey, they sell out for their own fans...that's the way it should be at UNT, and maybe it will be one of these days...we needed to set up some system and this seems fair enough....I goofed when I did my President''s Council thing and forgot to send some of the donation to athletics...I send other monies for that...but it did "hurt" my points total...hey, live and learn. I know better now. I give a thumbs up to the athletic dept. for coming up with what appears to be an O.K. system...better get it in place now, as if things continue to improve, it will be "harder and harder" to get good seats for UNT home games...HOPE SO...that will mean we are winning! Go Mean Green...join the Exes and join the Mean Green Club. Tough to call it a club...doesn't do anything that I can recall as a "Club"...but, hey, call it want you want...just join! Support the GREEN! Am waiting patiently for Quoner's comments about all the "..." between clauses. Come on...I know you are out there somewhere just ready for a "Quoner" comment!
  18. Wow...brings back a bunch of great memories...enjoy every second of it..it will be a memory before you know it...my youngest is now 28! I do remember when he was young enough to think I actually "walked on water"...ha! But, great things continue...he just graduated from medical school a couple of weeks ago...serves as a Lt. in the Navy medical Corps. Stationed at Norfolk Naval Hospital for his interneship...I am trying to get him home for the UNT-Navy game on Nov. 11. Already sent him an Exes "Sink Navy" T-Shirt...he thought it was "pretty cool", but didn't think he would wear it on base! Probably good thinking....Congrats on the new Dad thing...it is indeed a GREAT RIDE...enjoy it!
  19. We SHOULD play SMU (and TCU for that matter) every year. Close to home games make for great traditions and BIG fan support. Even though I like beating MTS, Troy, etc., I just can't get as worked up over playing them as I can SMU, TCH, etc., etc. I still think a great "traditions" game beats all...take a look at the Army-Navy game, the Texas-Ou game, the Texas-Texas A7M game...and on and on and on....no, UNT-SMU may not have the same "feel" as Army-Navy, TX-OU, but the excitement and fan support is BIG just the same. This year's game at SMU should be FUN...especially when we beat them at their home this year! Go Mean Green! See you at the game!
  20. Very funny! That's the kind of new we could possibly get if we took a run at the kid Texas kicked off their squad recently. Not good, don't need it.....Nice Quoner...nice job!
  21. Hey, I saw a bit of Coach Hedlund's soccer camp...no, I do not have a daughter attending, I am just a "soccer guy"...had a son that played all the way through college...great game! Anyway, UNT is doing great things with great people. If you haven't been keeping up with the soccer program...you should be. It's winning and winning! The team is a real threat to go to the NCAA's every year! I remember when "G" took the job at Texas A&M several years and several NCAA tournament appearance ago.....He told me that Texas A&M has made a committment to win in women's soccer...well, looks to me like UNT has made a similar committment...we have an excellent coach, a nice soccer facility and a team of quality players...both on and off the field. You can see the results of building a good program by watching the girls at Coach Hedlund's camp. Anyway, this program and team has earned respect...and it has earned the right to have support from UNT fans...come out this next season and watch the team play...it's fun...and, cahnces are VERY good that you will watch a UNT victory! NOW IF RV WOULD ONLY RE-START THE MEN'S SOCCER PROGRAM! Come on RV...would cost a heck of a lot less than baseball...and, it's a much more exciting sport to watch! Baseball...let's see about 5 min. of activity in a 3 hour span...yep, that's my idea of an exciting spectator sport! Hey, don't get me wrong...I loved baseball when I played baseball....played it for many years... GREAT sport to PLAY...but, BORING TO WATCH...it puts me to sleep! Soccer, on the other hand...is non-stop...not many fat guys play soccer! Check out some of the bodies wearing those major league baseball uniforms these days....UGH...and, why do the managers still wear uniforms???? Go get 'em John Hedlund. Great job...keep it up! Well done ladies...keep it up!
  22. In case you haven't noticed...Oklahoma State is on the move...that Boone Pickens money is beginning to kick in....I think UNT could take a lesson or two from Oklahoma State with these football camps, etc. OSU just might be a great school to get on the football schedule...I think we would have a better shot at them than we would OU right now. I think with the "new sheriff and attitude" on the football field at UNT right now, that we would have a decent shot at OSU! Beat them in the past...let's see...who was that coach...Oh, I remember, an exciting...mix it up... entertaining...Coach named Hayden Fry Go get 'em Todd!
  23. I've got an idea....let's quit talking about the past and DD. It was...it's over! Whether he was a good recruiter, a bad recruiter, a lousy play caller, a boring coach, a lazy coach, etc. is all in the past now...THANK GOODNESS! Let's look forward with TD, get behind the team, buy tickets and go to the games. And, be part of the Exes...an active part...It's a new day and new era at UNT and I, for one, am 100% happy about that. I just want to look forward...the recent past with DD is just too BAD to even remember. I say...FORWARD!
  24. This thread is pretty funny...to even CONSIDER this kid id NUTS...plain and simple! No, I am not convicting him ahead of time (remember the Duke Lacrosse players?????), but appears this is not the first little incident involving this young man. He needs to get his act together somewhere else. UNT does not need this kind of stuff. Convicted or not...there is a character issue when a kid is found in two cars...neither of which are his....think about it...not just as a football prospect, but as a young man who seems to be headed in the wrong direction. He may need to consider priorities surrounding his life that do not involve football....No need to bring this "stuff" to UNT>
