  1. Are you talking about this Hilton? Hilton Houston Southwest If so, that's exactly the area I'm talking about. There's a reason the rate is only $65. The hotel itself is very nice - I haven't stayed there, but my company has held meetings there. It was undoubtedly built back when SW Houston was the place to live/work/etc. You'll be plenty safe at the hotel, but you're not going to want to spend any time walking around the area.
  2. Nothing is cheap in the Galleria area, and you wouldn't want to stay at the "Great Western Inn" on Southwest Freeway off of Hillcroft! Sadly, I work 2 blocks away from there.
  3. I understand that the Westin Galleria will be the team hotel, and the site of the Friday night "Pep Rally".
  4. Shiner or Saint Arnold, which is brewed in Houston and locally owned. They will be expanding/moving their brewery closer to downtown in 2009.
  5. I don't mean to hijack this thread, but it has occured to me that this year is the 25th anniversary of our first Southland conference championship. It's also the 25th anniversary of my graduation from NT in December, so the two events are intertwined for me. Has anyone heard of plans by the Athletic Department to honor that team, and Corky Nelson?
  6. Mac has been pretty good at spreading his advertising dollars around with all Houston sports teams, college and pro. But he starts out with a bang, and after a while his interest wanes, and eventually moves onto something else. Do you remember the "galleryfurniture.com bowl"? Then for a while, he was interested in tennis, then horse racing...
  7. From the Houston Chronicle: Rice has game plan for bringing in more fans "For the first time since 2003, Rice will narrow its focus on one football game with the belief that an intense marketing effort might yield a raucous atmosphere when the Owls host SMU in their season opener at Rice Stadium on Aug. 29." (Rice AD ) "Del Conte hopes to lure a sizable crowd to Rice Stadium that might enjoy the product enough to return when the Owls host North Texas on Sept. 27." "... furniture impresario Jim McIngvale will be recognized for his advertising contributions via Gallery Furniture." "Rice’s struggles with home attendance necessitate the hoopla. The Owls lured 27,832 fans with their previous Operation Sellout production on Oct. 18, 2003 against Navy."
  8. Was the call from the Mean Green Club, or from the Advancement Office? I recently upgraded to section E (and therefore gave an additional $250) and the other day I received a call thanking me for my donation. The young woman (I assume a student volunteer) only said she was calling from UNT, and didn't mention the MGC. And she wasn't asking me for another donation(!). So I guess that's now standard procedure. BTW, section E may be officially sold out, but there are apparently a few seats available here & there for existing MGC members who want to upgrade.
  9. A heavy dose of synchronicity: Woman receives 5 cloned puppies * The puppies are pit bulls * They are clones of "Booger" * The owner's last name is McKinney
  10. Well, let's see. First the earth cooled. And then the dinosaurs came, but they got too big and fat, so they all died and they turned into oil. And then the Arabs came and they bought Mercedes Benzes...
  11. Sorry, I think we're done chewing on it: http://www.gomeangreen.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=41837 I thought there would have been more comments, especially from those who think we're losing ground to everyone else, but maybe it's because UH is only adding to their existing stadium, not building a whole new one.
  12. http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/front/5916575.html "Of the $38.7 million cost, $18 million will come from private donations, said Dave Irvin, associate vice chancellor/associate vice president of plant operations. So far, $12 million has been pledged." "The university will kick in $5 million to cover 10,000 square feet of academic space, while the remainder will be raised through revenue bonds, to be paid with money from the sale of club seats and suites and rentals of a ritzy club area, Irvin said." "The addition could be completed by the 2010 football season."
  13. According to David Barron in the Chronicle: http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/sports...on/5906763.html Astros conflicts will delay broadcast of the Texas High school Coaches Association all-star games next week. The basketball game will air at noon Tuesday, and the football game will air at noon Wednesday. …
  14. Even Jerry Jones is doing this: http://lb.dallascowboys.com/paver/. I like the twist the Cowboys have added - you get a brick of your own, identical to the one that is installed at the stadium.
  15. It must be a Head Coach's affliction - you're apparently too young to remember that Tom Landry frequently mispronounced Gary Hogeboom's name "Hogenboom". Naaa... I'm betting it was the writer who got it wrong.
  16. Rice Stadium - Wikipedia In 2006, the end zones seats were covered with tarps, reducing seating capacity to 47,000. However, it can easily be reconfigured to its original capacity. Some interesting trivia: "The current Rice Stadium replaced Rice Field (now Rice Track/Soccer Stadium)[2]. The older stadium seated fewer than 37,000 fans." "As originally built, it seated 70,000 fans — more than the total number of Rice's living and deceased alumni. Rice Stadium was built before professional football came to Houston, and 70,000 fans might be expected to attend a college football game there." "might" being the operative word...
  17. Yes, I'll email or post the "minutes" (or both).
  18. one last bump - the meeting is tonight!
  19. Welcome back! We need the levity you add to the board. Maybe you should change your screen name to Green Grenade III now?
  20. Rick, you should send a copy to the staff of "The North Texan".
  21. Wow. The natives are restless! There's too much to respond to here. As a de-facto member of the Gulf Coast Chapter board, I'll just say that the chapter is going through a leadership transition; unfortunately this has been happening at the same time as the leadership transition in Denton. We just had our first meeting with Rob McKinney last month, and we're just now starting to plan for the Rice game. So let me invite everyone who wants to be involved with the Gulf Coast chapter, or just wants to help out with planning an event (events?) for the Rice game, to a meeting next Tuesday evening. When: Tuesday, July 1st, 7pm Where: Double Dave's Pizza, Greenway Plaza area, 3879 Southwest Freeway (between Weslayan & Buffalo Speedway) Please send me a PM if you are going to attend, or if you can't attend, but still would like to be involved. Harry, I know you're not in the Houston area. I'd like to hear some more of your ideas. And can you pin this thread? George French B.S. 1983, Computer Science major, Music minor
