  1. If you were at the bar, then you actually missed us. We were in the "patio room" beyond the bar (more than 20 of us) - and we did have the sound on. The host/hostess should have told you when you came in. I saw that there were a few screens at the bar with the game on, and worried that this might happen. I'm more than a bit irritated about that - I bet now you are too.
  2. Thanks to everyone who came - that's what made it successful. We had this party at Champps due to a committment by the Gulf Coast Exes president (before I got involved). But I'm inclined to have future parties at SRO - what do y'all think?
  3. ed - I'll assume that means you'll be there tonight? If you ever found the leftover "door prizes" from last year, bring them. I have lots more, of course. Do I remember correctly that you posted a few days ago that Nathan Dagley is a former player? He's my Nationwide agent, not that I've ever met him...
  4. B.S. 1983, Major: Computer Science, Minor: Music I started out as a music major, so I had more hours in my minor than in my major! I've been writing software for the insurance industry for the past 22 years (where has the time gone?), but I'm in-between jobs right now, thinking about a career change... I know a couple of people in the Home Theater / Home Automation / Consumer electronics field, most notably my old Bruce Hall roomate, who is editor of "Home Entertainment" magazine, so I'm considering something in that direction. Sound_Man, I've checked out your web site; I'd like to get a chance to talk with you...
  5. Houston Where: Champp's 1121 Uptown Park Blvd. 610 and Post Oak http://www.champps.com/ The game starts at 6:30; why not come straight from work?
  6. I found this on fanblogs.com: New Orleans Bowl off to "La.-La." land? For all you Mean Green fans out there, Lafayette is 428 miles from Denton, Texas (the home of the University of North Texas, which has participated in all four New Orleans Bowls since the game's inception). Bowl officials would be wise to consult with the folks in Denton prior to relocating the game.
  7. The only better scenario than Lafayette is a city capable of being the host of the Sun Belt's 2nd bowl once the New Orleans Bowl can return home. But that would probably be in Florida, and maybe it's best if the NOB's temporary home is in Louisiana.
  8. Sounds like a percussion ensemble with a wind section instead of a wind ensemble with a percussion section .
  9. Coming by myself, from Sugar Land; unfortunately my wife is under the weather. I was going hitch a ride with my friends (also from Sugar Land) whose son is a student, but no matter what event they go to they arrive just as it starts and leave immediately when it ends. So I'm driving myself, and hope to be able to get there around 3 and help the Greenbackers tailgate party however I can. I'm looking forward to putting faces to names. A positive note - my friends' son is a 5th year accounting student, and was one of those upset last year when the finals schedule was changed (He had gone to the 2003 bowl, so it's not like he hates athletics). Apparently he has "gotten over it", and is looking forward to the game. Hopefully he's representative of most students.
  10. Rhapsody in Blue - great choice, especially with at least a few jazzers in the band. But it'll have to be a "short version", the whole piece is 17-1/2 minutes! And they'll need a couple of hundred clarinets just so they can be heard .
  11. I saw your post just before 6:30, as I was about to go out to get dinner. I was barely able to pull in 88.3 in the car - lots of static. For those who don't know Houston, Sugar Land is in the southwest part of town; the station is in Conroe, in the north. No, they were playing Christian music. I really didn't expect anything other than the games would be broadcast anyway.
  12. At this point, I think we have a self-feeding system, where winning the 'Belt means we attract good recruits, and therefore we'll keep winning the 'Belt. Of course, we need to start winning OOC games, but that will start happening as long as we continue scheduling "mid-majors" such as Tulsa, La Tech and lesser "BCS" schools rather than top 5 schools like UT, LSU, & OU. But I voted for the stadium, since I believe that getting the stadium built will show that there is continued support from the administration and the BOR. If that support disappears, then not only will the stadium not get built, but RV and DD might decide to go elsewhere (not that I expect either to be here forever). And what kind of AD and/or coach would take over after that, with no BOR/Admin support? Instead of being on the way up, we'd be on the way down. In other words, the selection of a new president and the appointment of new regents are most important. I also think a new stadium likely will help with recruiting, improve attendance, and could make the difference in making the next step up to a new conference.
  13. You're absolutely right, and just described me to a "T". I came to NT from Long Island for the Jazz program, and ended up graduating with a Computer Science degree. I wasn't a football fan as a kid, and didn't even know NT had a football team (hell, I didn't even know about NT until the year I came to Denton). But the first weekend I was in Bruce Hall (in 1979), one of the guys down the hall came around trying to get people to come with him to the game. I said "why not", we whipped UTEP something like 49-3, and I was hooked. Even after I changed my major, I was in the marching band for another 2 years - some great times.
  14. Rivals MTSU's chief football rivals are the University of North Texas Eagles. The chief basketball rivals are the Western Kentucky University Hilltoppers. Can wikipedia be edited by anyone? Should we edit this to "University of North Texas Mean Green"? This sounds familiar: Trivia Alumni and boosters have repeatedly tried to change the university's name to the University of Middle Tennessee, but the request has been consistently rejected by the Tennessee Board of Regents. Though the official reason is not known, speculation centers on The University Of Tennessee's efforts to stop such a change, so "UMT" would not be confused as being a member of the UT system, the other higher education organization in Tennessee.
  15. When you say "it was not on", do you mean you couldn't get the station, or that they didn't have the game on? I don't get the station down in Sugar Land, but when I was leaving SRO last night (about an hour after the game ended), I tuned my car radio to 88.3, and the station came in clearly. It appears that the station is based in Conroe (check out http://www.tvradioworld.com/region1/tx/webcasters.asp?m=hou, but the transmitter may be elsewhere.
  16. I plan on getting there between 5 & 5:30. There aren't that many NT Exes to make it reasonable to have more than one party. I have RSVPs for about 15 people so far, with a few "maybes". I hope you'll be able to come to the Northwest Mall SRO. I just checked with the manager. Children accompanied by their parents are welcome, with a "curfew" of 11pm or the end of the game, whichever is later. You won't be the only one - my friends here in Sugar Land will probably bring their 8 year old daughter. BTW, Jim & Inez Dickey (DD's parents) will be joining us again. H-towngreen, how about that ride?
  17. I live in Sugar Land - you're welcome to ride with me. The only thing is, I need to be there a bit early since I'm the "host". PM me if this works for you. We chose SRO over Knuckleheads because Knuckleheads expects to be full of UT fans, and although we would get a screen, the bar's sound system would have the UT game, and it would be hard to hear ours.
  18. It's a scan of the logo from my old band t-shirt, sized in MS Photo Editor (Office 97), and cleaned up a bit using MS Paint. Here's another T-shirt scan (if I've done the attachment correctly): [attachmentid=172]
  19. Ah - Bob Morgan said someone had them, but he couldn't remember who. What do you have? Please send me a PM...
  20. See the "Houston Game-watching" party topic...
  21. BTW, I've been lurking for almost 2 years , and finally decided I needed to stop just observing and start participating. I've managed to attend a home game or two each year, and went to the bowl game against Memphis. As you can tell by my member name, I'm a musician, not an athlete, so I won't have much to say about football. But don't get me started about the band - I'm from the Winslow era!
  22. The Gulf Coast Exes (i.e. Houston) game-watching party will be at SRO - Northwest mall which is at Hwy 290 & Loop 610. There is a map at their web site: SRO Sports Bar & Cafe. I see that several of you were wondering - I just volunteered to organize the parties at the Gulf Coast Exes board meeting last Wednesday, scouted out locations yesterday, and just confirmed with SRO minutes ago. SRO is a great place - quite a few alumni groups have game-watching parties there. It's large, and is laid out with multiple watching areas, so that each group has its own area. I'd like to know who will be coming - I've given the manager an estimate of 15-20 people based on the couple of parties I went to last year, but if I know we will have more than that, he might be able to plan for us better. - George
