  1. Texas-OU weekend hurts with so many leaving for Dallas, but we could still get a good crowd with those that stay if we do some creative promotion-or ANY promotion for a change.
  2. Our school colors are green and white. Why is it so difficult to remember that? I suppose this will just be one more example of a UNT school tradition slipping through our fingers. I may just have to become a UT fan. At least they value tradition over trendiness.
  3. I thought of another myth that refers to SMU, but concerns us. I have often seen in print that SMU was the first "major" school to break the football color barrier in Texas with Jerry Levias. We did it a decade earlier with Abner Haynes and others. As far as "major" is concerned, we were in the Missouri Valley with such teams as Louisville, Cincinnati, Tulsa, etc. I think that qualifies as major.
  4. They could still play jazz tunes. Very few members of the SMU band are music majors of any kind, but they put on a hell of a show - THAT IS APPROPRIATE FOR A FOOTBALL GAME.
  5. Excellent points, Stan R (and some I have been making for some time). "Fly like an Eagle" has become one of my least favorite songs of all time. It is draggy, droopy, uninspiring, and lethargic - all the things we should be attempting to overcome at UNT. As far as getting the crowd into the game, we may as well be playing a Brahms lullaby. Great idea on "Cotton Eyed Joe"by the way
  6. I just realized that "Hold that Tiger" is "Tiger Rag". Sorry about that , but we do need a peppy song like that. We also need to realize that a football game is not a band concert. We are a jazz school. We need to jazz things up.
  7. Think of songs like "Hold That Tiger", but are not associated with a particular school. A lot of old familiar tunes are good at exciting the crowd. Hell play "The Charleston" and have everyone start DOING the Charleston. That would be new and unique. Other ideas: "The Wabash Cannonball", "The Orange Blossom Special". These are MOVEMENT song that might just get everyone moving. There are also Dixieland tunes. I doubt if anyone has an exclusive on "Tiger Rag" for example. Finally, if UT can do "Deep in the heart of Texas", WE can do "Deep In the Heart of Texas". They don't own the damned thing.
  8. That we are a commuter school. We are not, nor have we ever been a commuter school. Our dorms have always been full and we are almost constantly building new ones. There are probably enough student apartment units in Denton to service a city of the size of Ft.Worth. Do we have commuters? Of course, just as other school do, but our percentage of full time resident students who live on campus is very high. I have always hated that stupid and persistent myth. That we are short on traditions. We have many rich traditions although some were lost with the destruction of the old-OLD UB. Perhaps they can be recaptured with the building of the new Union. More on that later.
  9. You know, Mac likes to compliment Hayden Fry as a great coach and he was a great coach who took CHANCES. He was not conservative when he took over losing programs at SMU, UNT and Iowa. He was innovative and usually had his teams playing over their heads. It was a Hayden Fry team at SMU that prompted Darrel Royal to say "Those guys come at you like spilled bb's." His teams did all kinds of crazy things with limited talent and won many games he had no business winning. To hell with conservatism - get creative.
  10. Sometimes I think it is less frustrating to be really, really bad than really, really mediocre.
  11. Our lack of rushing yards should be a huge concern. Our backs may not be great, but they are better than that.
  12. Crazy game at SMU. I almost feel sorry for them, but I'm feeling too sorry for us. 14,000 actual, 19,000 announced.
  13. To all young would be Mean Green football fans - GET OUT NOW WHILE THERE IS STILL TIME. It is too late for many of us, but there is no reason for you to spend your lives in disappointment and heartbreak. I will be at Apogee next Saturday night, but there is still time for you to save yourselves. Listen to me, please listen to me for I pass this way but once.
  14. Since when is 5'9' and 185 pounds tiny? Unique is unique. "one of the unique" nullifies unique.
  15. I agree with Harry. This game is critical and may be a landmark game that reverberates beyond this season.
  16. Good point, but it was very close to launching and I think the official even warned McCarney about it. I'm glad, however, that we are being aggressive and hard hitting out there. If we go too far the flags will come.
  17. Temple is pretty bad but, hey, maybe they can provide SMU with a win against a 1A opponent this year.
  18. Great idea. The pavilion would be a very pleasant place to hang out and re-hash the game after the sun goes down. Why rush into traffic when we could make game day last a while longer?
