  1. The only way to go from Denton, Lewisville etc. is the train, but perhaps we should make sure that DCTA realizes that we have a bowl game that day and that there will be an increased demand. There seems to often be a lack of communication between DCTA and UNT events anyway. There was no shuttle, for example on that cold, cold UTSA game day. The last thing we need, for example, is for the Atrain to CURTAIL service New Years day because it is, in fact, New Tears Day. It has been my experience as a loyal ATrain customer that such a miscalculation is quite. possible.
  2. Good point. We may have gotten a bigger named opponent, but if we were outmatched no one would stay tuned to watch a lopsided game which would be an embarrassment at any rate. UNLV is not exactly Podunk U.They are well known (for reasons both good and bad)in college sports and beatable. Look guys, we are an up and coming program that I believe has turned a very important corner. We are not Notre Dame - yet.
  3. I remember a night game in the early 60's against Sam diego Navy or somebody when the temp was around 20 and sleet was blowing sideways. No one was left by the third quarter but the band and they were trying like hell to sneak away. My buddy, Jimmy Beam, and I stayed for the whole game and had a hell of a time. I forgot who won that night.
  4. I can't take much pleasure from an empty stadium for a storied old program. Remember, "Ask not for whom the bells toll...well you know. In the final analysis, along with our own loyalties, we all need to support college athletics around here. Would that we were Austin, Fayetteville, Waco etc. We are not.
  5. If we REALLY go to the HOD, then losing to UTSA (as some of you have pointed out) could be a blessing in disguise. The local press coverage, value to recruiting, the New Years Eve party etc. could be a real boon to the Mean Green Nation and great publicity for the school itself.
  6. I must hand it to the Mustangs, they gave it their all in front of a handful of loyal and enthusiastic students with a second string quarterback in a game in which it would have been tempting to have just shown up. Your right, Harry, UCF did look cold.
  7. No one is so gauche as to sit in the stands at SMU games anymore. They continue their "Boulevarng in their cozy, booze and hor d'voures filled stadium suites. It is like the Roman Coliseum games without the plebeians. Rome fell.
  8. Nice trivia, Harry. Come back Jesse Neely, Frank Ryan, Dickie Moegle etc. where ever you are.
  9. I agree, Mean Green Matt. Most fun since 1977. Although we didn't quit pull off a victory that snowy day, I will never forget that game. I love snow, sleet . ice etc. The neat thing about real football in Texas is that it is played outside and transcends three seasons. Think of the Idaho game and look at Apogee today, as well as all those autumn days in between.
  10. Return the real Scrappy from the 50's and 60's. He is vaguely similar to the Kansas Jayhawk and an original icon. He LOOKS like a scrappy underdog and that fits us perfectly.
  11. I would rather attend a Twiddly- Winks contest at Fair Park than the Super Bowl or anything else at Jerry World. I despise that suburban sprawl grotesquerie and think all amateur athletics should avoid its contamination at all costs.
  12. I agree The Fake Lonnie Finch. The way our defense played that day remains a mystery. It was as if they thought it was just too cold to play football until late in the game.
  13. Ok then umbrellas over the tables would do. As it is, no one uses the patio until October.
  14. Do at least as well next year as this year and beat SMU and UTSA.
  15. Five good reasons, emmitt01, There are few better settings for a bowl game than the Cotton Bowl at Fair Park in Dallas.
  16. Too true to you too, meangreendork. SMU used to fill the Cotton Bowl when Dallas was 1/4 of its present size and most of those fans had no degree from SMU or anywhere else. The last coach who made a concentrated effort to win back Dallas fans was Hayden Fry and that was a long, long time ago.
  17. In the meantime they could at least put an awning over the patio. It is unbearable out there at the beginning of the season.
  18. I feel sorry for SMU football in a way because I can remember when it was the only game in town (except the Dallas Eagles baseball team) and how fun it was to go to the House that Doak Built and see good college football in a great atmosphere. That was then, however, and this is now. No matter what aspirations it has these days, SMU can't continue to ignore and attempt to manipulate basic mathematics forever. The Mustangs lost their Dallas fan base years ago to the pros and are not likely to regain it with the snobbery and pretense that leads to calling tailgating "Boulevarding" while building more and more luxury suites in an apparent attempt to have more fans in sky boxes than in the stands. Such a topsy-turvy perversion must eventually collapse upon itself. UNT, SMU, TCU and UTA (basketball etc.) should play each other through some kind of round robin system in major sports every year. Those rivalries would could for college sports in this area, economically sound and a lot of fun. If, however, self centered attitudes prevail over the common good, those selfish attitudes will eventually reap the whirlwind. Indeed, the last time I attended a game at Ford Stadium it was rather sparse and windblown at that. Booze is fun but it is not the answer.
  19. Train station. Good idea. The Green Line stops right in front of Fair Park.
  20. Precisely my thoughts, jredallas, and I just thought of the obvious - a downtown pep rally at this very park. I was downtown during the tree lighting a few weeks ago and if the crowds that night are any indication of what might be down there New Years Eve, we could be looking at quite a party. The more I consider this possibility the more excited I become. Man, I hope we go to the HOD.
