Fannin County, Texas -- Rob Wiggins (Bonham, State Champion High Jump), Wade Hayes (Bonham, State Champion Pole Vault) and the 2013 Trenton Tigers State Semifinalist Baseball Team will be inducted into the Fannin County Sports Hall of Fame Saturday, January 29, 2022. In varsity track, Rob competed in the 400 meter dash, 1600 meter relay and high jump. His team was District Champs in 11-AAA Mile Relay in 1987 and he was a District Champ in the 400 meter dash in 1989. His senior year he came in second place in the Regional II 3A Track and Field Meet in the high jump with a leap of 6 feet 7 inches, which led him to the state competition in Austin, Texas. Injuries had kept Wiggins from performing at his best during the weeks leading up to the state meet, but when the big day arrived and the other competitors began to falter, Rob continued. He cleared 6 feet 10 inches to improve on his personal best by two inches and won the Class 3A High Jump competition. More importantly for his future, he hopefully caught the eye of a college coach who would allow him to continue to compete while gaining a higher form of education. This coach was Ken Garland from the University of North Texas in Denton who awarded Rob a scholarship in Track and Field. Rob lettered his freshman year and continued competing in High Jump. Jennifer Cowley, provost and vice president of academic affairs at the University of North Texas, will be the sole finalist for next president of UT Arlington, the University of Texas System Board of Regents decided unanimously Friday. The actor died on April 7 due to complications from Parkinson’s disease, according to multiple reports. He was 84. Hampton was best known for his roles in F Troop and Teen Wolf, as well as in The Longest Yard, for which he earned a Golden Globe nomination. He spent more than 50 years in the industry as an actor, director, writer and producer before retiring to his native Texas. The entertainer was born in Oklahoma City in 1936, but raised in Dallas. A native of Dallas, Blood and Thunder marks the first time grappling before a hometown audience in Nduka's burgeoning career. He'll do so in a venue a short walk from where the Dallas Sportatorium once stood, a venue that became something of a wrestling mecca thanks to the Von Erich family. Brothers David, Kerry, Kevin, Mike and Chris Von Erich attracted capacity crowds to the Sportatorium on a weekly basis. Kevin's sons Marshall and Ross are members of the MLW roster alongside Nduka. Updated Odds: Thursday’s College Basketball Best Bets - Action Network North Texas is 1-7-1 to the over this season and also plays at the second-slowest adjusted tempo in college basketball, per KenPom. It utilizes, on average, 21.1 seconds per possession on offense and forces opponents to use up an average of 17.3 seconds of their shot clock. The Mean Green also shoot only 31.5% from 3-point range and 47.4% from inside the arc. Since they have a top-40 defense, all of these signal under. In addition, UAB holds opponents to an average of 17.5 seconds per possession on defense. This basically says the North Texas possessions will be sluggish. Now, the Blazers do shoot 37.2% from distance. However, the Mean Green defend the arc extremely well with JJ Murray and Tylor Perry. They allow an average of only 28.1% from 3-point land. North Texas launches a ton of 3s, so if they don’t fall, it will not be in a strong position for much offense. UAB doesn’t shoot much from downtown, so expect this game to go under the total — as most Mean Green games have. The market has not quite caught up, so there’s still plenty of value in these unders. In an increasing now-or-never college landscape where coaching turnover is an everyday occurrence, USF athletics director Michael Kelly is preaching patience when discussing the future of the Bulls athletics department. “Like a wise man once told me, we need to take more of a 10-year view than a 10-game view,” Kelly said on Wednesday. “You can’t get too up or too down with everything that happens, and you’ve got to weather the storm and move things forward. Since arriving in 2018, Kelly has overseen fundraising efforts to secure nearly $30 million in gifts and commitments, resulting in several on-campus facility upgrades, including a $3 million renovation of the football locker rooms in the Lee Roy Selmon Athletics Center. He’s also overseen construction on the $22 million Indoor Performance Facility, with completion set for summer 2022. According to Kelly, the decision to extend the contracts of his coaches was made in the spirit of building continuity among the programs. It was important for recruiting and it showed a commitment to the coaches and athletes. One of the coaches who received an extension was football coach Jeff Scott. Scott wrapped up his second season with the Bulls and is 3-18 overall, including 2-10 in 2021. Despite the disappointing early results, Kelly believes Scott is the right man for the program, citing the challenges of coaching during the pandemic in his first season while also dealing with an NCAA probation from the previous coaching staff. Newton’s First Law of Motion talks about an object in motion will stay in motion and for the UNT Mean Green football program, the winter of 2021-22 means a time to continue the motion of the previous season. Despite a loss in the recent Frisco Football Classic (maybe the only time this bowl game will be played,) the Mean Green are moving forward with reloading their roster with the early 2022 signee class. The most interesting position that seems to have garnered numerous signees is the QB position with two transfer players set to join the UNT program. Stone Earle is a tranfer from Abilene Christian and was a bit of a surprise with his committment to the Mean Green. Earle is a 6’2″, 203 pound athlete who threw 101 out of 154 passes for 1,216 yards, 13 TD’s and four INT’s this season. With the Covid extra year of eligibility, Earle only played in two games as a freshman in 2020 and will more than likely have four full years of eligibilty, giving UNT a chance to reload at the QB position after the Mason Fine era (writer’s note: I’m a retired OK high school football coach and had the chance to coach against Mason Fine when he was at Locust Grove HS and he was fun to watch!) Adding to the QB mix this upcoming season is additional transfer signee JD Head. Head is transferring out of Louisiana Tech and the Pearland HS almunus played in only two games in 2020 and this season went 47 for 88 passing and garnered 559 passing yards with six TD’s and 3 INT’s. He’s helped develop Texas Tech’s first All Big-12 first-team receiver since Michael Crabtree, and also showed how well he can develop talent during his time at North Texas, where he coached current Los Angeles Chargers receiver Jalen Guyton. The radio show, which will be aired live on the Mean Green Sports Network (KNTU 88.1 FM or on the Varsity Network app), is an hour long show hosted by the voice of the Mean Green Dave Barnett. North Texas women's basketball head coach Jalie Mitchell and men's basketball head coach Grant McCasland each will recap the past week's games and preview what's upcoming. DENTON, Texas – North Texas student-athletes had a stellar fall semester in the classroom posting an overall 3.116 grade point average with 63 percent of its student-athletes registering a 3.0 GPA or higher. Overall, 12 of UNT’s 14 teams recorded a GPA of 3.0 or better, with volleyball’s 3.612 GPA leading the way. An impressive 63 student-athletes finished the semester with a perfect 4.0 and were named to the President’s List, with 224 finishing above a 3.0. With the strong fall 2021 semester, UNT has now completed five consecutive semesters with a cumulative GPA for all student-athletes above a 3.0. Mean Green freshman student-athletes totaled a 3.022 GPA, while international student-athletes had a 3.268 GPA. Additionally, 15 UNT student-athletes graduated at the conclusion of the fall semester.
