  1. LOGAN, Utah – LaMarcus Hicks has been named Utah State's cornerbacks coach, it was announced Wednesday by Aggie head football coach Blake Anderson. Hicks owns 10 years of coaching experience in the college ranks following a two-year stint as a defensive back for the Detroit Lions, appearing in 12 games from 2007-08. Prior to coaching at JSU, Hicks coached two years (2014-15) at North Texas. In his first season with the Mean Green, Hicks led the cornerbacks into record-breaking territory in 2014. North Texas had seven different defensive backs tally an interception, which was a school record for most DBs in a single season with at least one pick. Five of those seven were cornerbacks coached by Hicks. Two Mean Green cornerbacks had interceptions returned for touchdowns. Cornerback James Jones was named to the Conference-USA second team in 2014 as he was the second-leading tackler and led the team with nine PBUs. read more: https://utahstateaggies.com/news/2022/2/9/football-lamarcus-hicks-named-cornerbacks-coach-at-utah-state.aspx

  3. Name: DeAndre Torrey Position: RB College: University of North Texas Height: 5’7″ Weight: 200 lbs Twitter: @TorreyBoy1 Instagram: @deandretorrey What do you think are the keys to success on the football field? First thing is controlling the controllables. Attitude and effort. Next most important thing is knowing what you are doing. Knowing the ins and outs of your assignments so you can play freely and not thinking about missing an assignment. If there was a billboard with 5 of your traits on it which 5 traits would be up there? Selfless, tough, accountable, disciplined, and hungry. What sets you apart from other running backs? My ability to catch the ball out of the backfield , and also line up in the slot and run routes that aren’t running back specific. Also my ability in the return game. How do you handle challenges both in life and on the football field? I take all challenges in my life and on the football field head on. I try to see them as opportunities to do better or push myself harder rather than just an obstacle. read more: https://www.nfldraftdiamonds.com/2022/02/deandre-torrey/
  4. Coming off of a recovered 2021 season with five straight wins and a bowl appearance, the North Texas Mean Green are poising themselves to have a breakout season in 2022. Head coach Seth Littrell was busy this past week working the recruiting pipeline and adding more young players to the Mean Green family for the upcoming season. With spring practices set to start in less than a month, excitement and anticipation is building around the North Texas football program. The Mean Green didn’t have to look too far to find five top notch signees and stayed entirely in the state of Texas to find the newest members of the February Signing Day class. Three of the players hail from the DFW metroplex and two from the Houston area; four of the signees are coming straight out of high school while one is a JUCO transfer. Seth Littrell and his staff were able to fill out three defensive players and two on the offensive side of the ball. read more: https://dalsportsnation.com/2022/02/05/unt-signing-day-adding-to-the-mean-green-family/amp/
  5. LUBBOCK, Texas – This is a story that tries to answer a question: Can a high school guy make it as a college coach? But before that question, this one: Does Joey McGuire still count as a high school guy? After all, perhaps he was more well known for the 14 seasons and three state championships at Cedar Hill, but he had spent the last five years on the staff at Baylor, first as tight ends coach under Matt Rhule and eventually as associate head coach and outside linebackers coach under Dave Aranda. So, what exactly is the statute of limitations on being a high school coach vs. a college guy? “You know that’s a really funny question,” McGuire said two weeks before his first official signing day at Tech. “Because at one point [at Baylor], my reps said, ‘You know, Joey, if you just go to the NFL as an assistant for one year, then you are no longer a high school coach. You are an NFL coach coming down to college. So, yeah, it is funny how people can get labeled. “But what I would say first to everybody is this: I am a high school coach who gets to coach college football. That is just my DNA. And it’s one reason we are going to be successful here. I really believe I wouldn’t be here without my high school background. So, I’m going to wear that badge with pride. I think it is my DNA. I think it will help me relate with our players, but I think it will help us in recruiting, too. I’m going to carry that banner with pride.” read more: https://gazette.com/ap/sports/texas-tech-is-betting-on-joey-mcguire-to-reestablish-its-football-identity/article_95a4d283-0aaa-573f-af47-018315117405.html

  11. Coach McCarney was offered and ultimately accepted another rebuilding job in November 2010. “Like always, assistant coaches get opportunities,” McCarney said. “That’s what happened to me at Iowa, that’s what happened to me at Wisconsin, that’s what happened to me at South Florida, that’s what happened to me at Florida. And then I got a chance to be a head coach at North Texas where Hayden Fry had been many, many years before.” This time, it was the University of North Texas in Denton. The Mean Green were nowhere near as mean as the moniker intended when Coach Mac took over the job, as North Texas had no more than three wins every season since 2005. “They were in the bottom 10,” McCarney said. “We took them to a bowl championship in 2013. Nine wins. We were voted the best team in school history last year. Then I rode off into the sunset and said ‘You know what? I could have never dreamed of the opportunities, the success and the wonderful memories I had in my time as a football coach.” read more: https://www.widerightnattylite.com/platform/amp/2022/1/31/22890407/legends-series-dan-mccarney-reflects-on-his-life-and-iowa-state-football

  14. In the two decades since the University of North Texas at Dallas opened in the southern part of the city, the school has provided an education for local students who graduate and largely return to work or continue their studies in the surrounding community. Now the school wants to amplify higher education resources in a region of Dallas that has long been underserved and under-resourced. Most of our students come from Dallas and the surrounding communities,” said Mong, who is a former editor of The News. “This goes hand in hand with our vision to serve this area.” The center’s opening signals a period of growth for UNT-Dallas, which started offering degree-related programs in 2000. The higher education institution received $100 million for the construction of a science building during the most recent legislative session. Plans for the building are in early stages. The building is expected to open in 2025. read more: https://www.dallasnews.com/news/education/2022/01/27/emmitt-smith-unt-dallas-celebrate-opening-of-new-center-in-southern-dallas/?outputType=amp
  15. Garza also has past stops as a defensive backs coach at Tennessee (2009) and USC (2010) before resigning from the Trojans’ program before the start of the 2011 season. According to a Yahoo Sports report from that year, Garza was tied to an NCAA investigation involving scout Willie Lyles. Lyles told investigators Garza wired him $1,500 for travel expenses for a running back recruit and his mother to fly to Tennessee’s campus for an unofficial visit in 2009. Garza eventually received a two-year show-cause penalty, which is among the harshest penalties that can be levied by the NCAA against coaches. This means any school looking to hire said coach must appear before an NCAA Infractions Committee and “show cause” as to why they shouldn’t be punished for the hiring and how they’ll monitor the coach post-hire. After a two-year break from coaching because of the penalty, Garza returned to the college ranks as a defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach for Pearl River Community College in Mississippi for the 2013 season. His first job back at the NCAA level came in 2015 when he was hired as Prairie View A&M’s linebackers coach. Garza has also been arrested twice for alcohol-related driving offenses. In 2003, as the cornerbacks coach at TCU, he was arrested and charged for driving while intoxicated near Forth Worth, Texas. And in 2019, as the safeties coach at Wyoming, he was arrested and charged for driving under the influence, which led to his resignation from that school. “Coach Garza has made some mistakes in his past,” Vigen said. “Mistakes that he would own up to, (and mistakes) he does own up to. And I have the ability to move on from that because I know the type of man he is, and I know the type of coach he is. I feel very comfortable that we made a tremendous hire today. read more: https://www.coastalbreezenews.com/sports/national/montana-state-football-hires-willie-mack-garza-as-new-defensive-coordinator/article_3f35d297-ee94-54aa-96d8-176359fbaf5c.html
  16. The Saskatchewan Roughriders announced Monday the signings of a pair of American players. Receiver Darvin Kidsy and defensive back Will Sunderland agreed to terms with the CFL team. Kidsy signed with the NFL’s Washington Football Team as an undrafted free agent in 2018 and played in five regular-season games with that team over two seasons. In 2020, the 6-foot-0, 180-pounder signed with the Seattle Seahawks and spent most of 2021 on the team’s practice roster. The 26-year-old played three seasons at the University of North Texas and one at Southern Texas University. In addition to playing receiver, he also handled return duties. read more: https://www.ckom.com/2022/01/24/roughriders-announce-signings-of-receiver-defensive-back/
