  1. --It might be cheaper for the WAC teams to pay LaTech to leave, it would save a lot on travel money.... Hawaii is a long trip too but it sounds good to recruits to get to play in Hawaii... but Northern Louisiana... naaah, no great attraction. LaTech's bank account is about to take a big hit unless they leave or are encouraged to leave. ---The MAC is the most compact it appears and was even more-so before allowing Temple in. ---It looks like every university on I-35 slid to the east a few miles. Tech is now in Tulia even worse, OU and OSU switched campuses. ---Notre Dame is now the only non-military academy not in a conference... and it will not change as long as they have that NBC contract......but NBC may get tired of them if they don't start winning big again.
  2. ---I did not realize that had changed it from Warriors.... They had those unusual basketball uniforms when they won the NCAA basketball championship under McGuire. ---Hmmmmm.... so Indians (make than Native Americans) think they are the only Warriors around. I can understand the "Redskin" objection but the rest seem stupid to me. I suppose those of Northern European heritage should object to the Minn. Vikings using those horned hats since they supposedly didn't use them either. ---Sounds if many alums didn't like the change either...two offered a million each to change it back... I wonder it the administration ignored the alums/students when they changed the name in 1994. This is a case of political/social corectness gone TOO far plus ignoring the desires of their students/alum which they represent..
  3. ---Polo or Lacoste... whichever.... I had a freshman frat suite-mate (at UNT) for one semester that was extremely concerned about the label or the little horsey or gator on the front of his shirt. It fits many people's image of SMU as well. Funny stuff. He also spent more time in the mirror than most woman I have known. He thought he was real lady-killer.....LOL Re: ties--times have reallly changed... In the 60's most people sorta of dressed-up to go to games and often wore ties even .... thank goodness that has changed. (look at old movies or sports films)
  4. The Cinn. game...... observation...... Cinn. had poor fan support but was able to move to the Big East. Football sure wasn't the reason, I guess for basketball reasons.
  5. It should work...... it worked for everyone else......nine members now. all small letters, no space: northtexas
  6. ---Midland Texas....apprx 350 miles ( one way, no stoplights after the two in the first two miles )....my kids live in Richardson & Allen. ...... will likely see 2-3 games this year. Went to UT, Baylor and one Denton game last year..... saw two in Denton the year before. ---The past few years there has been several Midland kids (Brewster only last year) playing that I knew as well.. none this year. "Have car, will Travel".
  7. The Sunbelt is a 4-year old football conference.... patience.... we (as a conference) need to start regularly winning non-conf games....plus stop the blow-outs...... then respect and attention will come. Any MAC mention... nope....... Personally I think we are a better conference or soon will be.... we are the football crazy South.
  8. repeat-------8 members now....could use some more competive Mean Green players. Read first post for settings and times... very close to Yahoo settings with return yards added
  9. ---It seems the worse stadiums were constructed during th late 60's and 70's. How many of those NFL /MLB stadiums have been destroyed and replaced. Many were cheaply built, while many older stadiums are still in use but have been modernized and basicly have a good structure. It is also interesting to note the worst quality US cars where made in the 70's and into early 80's as well and then foreign cars really pushed into the market with better quality. Makes you wonder why. ---Just guessing but the 50-60 year olds at that time (who were running things pretty much) grew up during the depression and seemed to have done things on the cheap and not paid as much attention to quality and stadiums only lasted 30 years.... There are more 50, early-60 cars running than 70 models, most of them were falling apart from day one.. --I realize this isn't football but a lot of stadiums constructed then (3-Rivers, Riverfront, Patroits, Buffalo, Seattle-dome, etc.) have disappeared because they became junkpiles.
  10. ----I had a North Texas shirt on in San Fran last summer and while touring the Giant's stadium the guide who was really an Giant exec. commented on the shirt and stated he had gone to a New Orleans Bowl and watched NT defeat Cinn. A few people on the street commented on it and asked if I was from Dallas. (They knew where it was, near Dallas). We are not as unknown as some here think we are.
  11. ---The fact that players graduating before 1980 only played three years is often overlooked. Freshman played on freshman teams before the late 70's.--- The fact that Ced Benson passed Earl Campbell in rushing yards is not as big deal when you look at it that way, Earl had more yards per year. I don't think anyone is close to Ramsey as QB. None of the others had a decent NFL career and he started for Denver several years (replaced by Craig Morten) and was successful at NT besides.
  12. I can honestly tell you that you are not in the business world. A fraternity is really a business internship. I dont think you can be adequatley prepared for the business world without being in one. as far as statistics go there has only been three presidents who were not in a fraternity (coincidentaly the three who didnt go to college) somthing like 85% of all senators and representatives were in a fraternity (I dont remember the exact stat but almost 100% of either democrat or republican were, the non fraternity memebers were almost all independant so you can insert joke here). also some large percentage of controlling officers of froture 500 companies were in a fraternity or sorority. I know that none of this really addresses the question of what virtues they have, and that is because it is a really tough thing to quantify. you learn lessons in how to deal with all types of people succesfully. you learn what networking means and how to do it well. you learn how to handle it when your best freind is the root of a problem that you have to deal with. you learn that that guy from that house down the street that you are working on a project with may be smiling and shaking your hand now but he is trying to bed your girlfreind when you look away. and you learn how to deal with a boss (the school) that thinks you (the fraternity) are wortless and more of a nusance than anything despite the fact that greek alumni donate on average 1000% more money to their alma-mater than non-greeks. no there is not an extra zero there and that number is about right on. there is a ton more I could type on this but I am taking an early retirement.
  13. This post won't make any friends but when I was at NT the term "Frat-Rat" really fit. One of them was having a Christmas Party in Dallas and set the hotel on fire... they were kicked off campus. Another had an incident where some "brothers, several" went to a TA residence on Oak St. and threatened him (his life) and apparently stated they would be back and now it got real complicated, several shots were later fired and the results was the graduate TA shot a plain-clothes policeman when he thought it was the returning frat boys to beat up or do him in. The policeman was seriously hurt but lived over it. Nothing happened to the TA because he thought he was defending his life. . Good-by frat #2. Another serious incident happened after a frat meeting when a bunch of them went to Oklahoma and came back loaded, two of them were Viet-Nam vets. The group went on a rampage about 1:00 AM, threw some people through some windows, beat up a couple of others, and finally wound up at the College Inn where I lived and broke in a room swung a bottle at the resident but hit the wall before hitting him in the face. It blinded him in one eye and the group were sentenced to jail or prison for quite some time... It made TV news in Dallas.......Good-by frat #3. A couple more had GPAs resembling "Delta House" and they were removed as well. I think there was only 3 remaining active frats at the end of my senior year. The Sororities did not seem to have the same problem. Frats in general had no respect then, they were viewed as rich drunks. Both of sons later joined a frat when they were in college and their groups seemed much different and they got a lot out of being a member. Both joined at A&M and one son transfer to UNT later but did not care for the same organization in Denton and never became active
  14. --Probably no one mentions Harvey because the NT was extremely small then (4000?) and also a lot the students of that era don't use computers and post and several are no longer with us that remember him. --- Vidal Carlin was QB when was a student at NTSU. I was impressed by him and the games were very entertaining.... pass, pass, pass. He was drafted by the NFL but didn't do a lot. One game I saw had about 100 passes thrown between the two QBs (Tulsa I think). The SWC at that time (except Baylor) was run, run and run. Baylor had Don Trull and Elkins which threw a lot. The Missouri Valley ( Tulsa, NT, Louisville) had several good QBs and throw a bunch. That Tulsa QB was highly successsful in the NFL. We got very little media attention then because college football in Texas was all SWC.
  15. The Sunbelt is a powerful conference with strong teams..........
  16. ---Quinn's ESPN play of the week against Arkansas State ( a one-handed diving catch in the corner of the end-zone) was unbelievable.
  17. ----QB is the one position that we shouldn't have a player with eligibility problems. We need a guy back there with good reasoning power that won't make dumb errors. (know when to throw the ball away, eat it, or how to manage the clock when needed). I would take a little less athletic ability to get a person who can make good decisions.
  18. ---Odis Mitchel's wins. Coaches don't stay put long anymore, especially at schools that aren't top tier such as Bowden at Florida State.... plus coaches that are very successful for a rather long period are sought after by higher paying schools. On the flip side in todays world alums are not happy with 6-7 wins per year either so those guys could not hang around long enough to get that many wins either. RE----The sacks---- I guess it helped a lot that Joe Greene was playing beside him (Cedric Hardeman) and how does anyone stop both of them.... impossible task. Wonder how many Joe G. got that day.....poor QB.
  19. ----We now have 5 members (all NT alums) and need more. It is set for 16 but may cut the size if we need to do so. I would think we have several members here who are COMPETIVE) It is free!!! If you have never done it before you will find it makes watching the NFL more interesting....after all, it is your players that are playing. Most are using their GMG ids but it is not absolutely required. This the FREE version, not the Plus version...(which is not free) League no: 156 password: northtexas The draft is a long time off so I will sent reminder to those who provide email but we need to get people committed to see where we are. Must have an even number, 12, 14, or 16.
  20. A long time until we draft.... Aug 30, and drafts at 9:30 PM... about a week before season starts. There are no earlier evening times left, will move up to 9:00 if possible later. We have 4 members now, all UNT grads, and at least 3 post on GMG some. I suggest that you use your GMG ID but don't have to do so. League no: 156 Password: northtexas ( One word, no capital letters) Settings are same as Yahoo with these changes: 1. 16 teams (hopefully, rather large league, lots of us, should be different) 2. Return yards count at the same rate as yards rushing and yards receiving. 20 yds worth 1 point. (creates more players worth drafting, often #3 receivers are returners which includes Dante Hall ) 3. One WR position changed to WR/TE (can use backup TE as WR when needed) 4. Added a RB/WR position. 5. FIVE bench players instead of Six. (will create 16 more players on available list which is needed with 16 teams) Have done this before... just keeps teams from rat-holing players to keep from others. I hope this explains the settings.....
  21. The NCAA is far from perfect but it does keep in control somewhat... Things would be a lot worse if they did nothing. ---A&M under Sherrill was a rather rotten program (same era as SMU problems) but I think Slocum later tried to run a clean program. That deal in the mid 90's was no fault of the university of the coaches but was an over-zealous alum providing some jobs for little or no work. Switzer at OU was a problem child also and his many of his athletes were near criminal types. The SMU death penalty resulted after repeated warnings and even assurances by SMU alum and Gov. Clements tht things were being cleaned up..... They weren't. I think the penality got a lot of other programs attention and they have straightened up a lot since then. http://espnradio.espn.go.com/page2/s/list/lies.html for more details.
