  1. RE raise: I actually don't understand how anyone that gets a public paycheck can support these guys currently in office Austin..... They are doing nothing for education. ---These special sessions are about cutting property tax which benefits those which own a lot of property.. (ie. the wealthiest 10%) and raise sales tax which effects the rest of us.. these "special sessions" are not about helping public schools or universities as they claim. No more and maybe less money will be available. Tuition has and is going up because the Texas Legislature and Governor cut university funding the last session by 3/4 Billion dollars so colleges had to increase tuition just to make up for their losses..... That is the largest reason for all the increases. I understand what you are talking about, I work at a public community college, the same is happening to us. I am 61, And they can't figure how why college professors make bad comments [ supposedly we are pagan-liberals ] about their political party. The biggest thing they are "conservative" about is not spending money for education. This may sound political but it is more about supporting education... both public schools and public universities. They don't--- except say they do. --------------------------------------------------------- Trivia question. Six of the past 25 years the U.S. Government had a surplus, the other 19 they spent more than they took in in taxes. Which ones? ________________________________ Ans: 1994-1999 , ie 6 of the 8 years the "conservative spending" party was not in power nationally.
  2. This is from a Southwest Ariline email I received today... Flying to Houston or San Antonio and then to Nashville might be cheaper. Maybe a better deal in next weeks email. Nashville, TN $59 one-way, to/from Baltimore, MD (BWI) $34 one-way, to/from Birmingham, AL $65 one-way, to/from Chicago Midway, IL $55 one-way, to/from Cleveland, OH $53 one-way, to/from Columbus, OH $84 one-way, to/from Detroit, MI $99 one-way, to/from Houston Hobby, TX $74 one-way, to/from Jacksonville, FL $55 one-way, to/from Kansas City, MO $55 one-way, to/from New Orleans, LA $99 one-way, to/from Orlando, FL $119 one-way, to/from Phoenix, AZ $64 one-way, to/from Raleigh-Durham, NC $99 one-way, to/from San Antonio, TX $99 one-way, to/from Tampa Bay, FL
  3. We need to convince BILL GATES not Robert Gates to help us. He has 50,000 million (50 Billion). We would even name the stadium for him. After all.... we the first accredited computer science school in America (true).
  4. ----If you ever had a II-S (or II-A) classification instead of I-A you had a deferment. You did not exactly request a deferment. North Texas and other colleges automaticly mailed your draft board a statement of enrollment. It was in you college registration papers (at least that is the way it was in (1962-66) and (67-68)) that you receieved each semester. You were suppose to carry the classification card in your wallet at all times... that is the card several people burned instead of their draft registration card. If you never had a card then maybe you didn't register for the draft...which was a crime if caught but I suspect you registered because getting caught was easy, especially if you attended college.. You may not have been called for a physical because of the lottery system put in later (Fall of 68) and you had a really late number.. The second option was you were older than I am and got to age 26 before they needed you. My physical was before the lottery system was put in place.
  5. ----I managed to avoid "the trip". I took my physical at age 24 (during the Tet offensive) and only one of the 12-14 guys of my age passed the physical (he was 22 and in construction) meanwhile all of the 18-19 years that took it that day passed. That era was so ridiculous, it was obvious they didn't really want us that were older and more educated (and harder to push around). I have later read the average recruit in Nam was 19.5...... in WWII the average recruit was 26. The USA sent as bunch of kids, not men as in other wars. I respect those who went just no respect for those who sent them, especially McNamara. Those whiz-kid, Ivy league advisors (first appointed by JFK) were misinforming LBJ left and right --especially about the events in the Bay of Tomkin. ---About the only good thing it accomplished was a lot of guys in my age that may not have finished college got degrees because no one wanted to be draft-bait.
  6. ----Maybe Bill Gates would like a stadium named for him... He only has about 50,000 million (ie. 50 Billion) He could afford it.......After all the Nobel Prize winner for the integrated circuit (Kilby, who died last month) which is the basis of the modern computer was from Texas Instruments which is located a few miles from Denton and is staffed by a lot of North Texas grads.. It could be "Microsoft Stadium" filled with a "Gates-Kilby Field" in it to honor him as well. Not a bad tax write off. Unfortunately I don't know him personally.
  7. Amen.... ---We who were not athletes knew we had to take responsiblity for ourselves. They need too as well. They have advantages that the regular students don't have and they still mess up... They need to take things more seriously or else they don't belong in college. Some people just don't belong there and just can't succeed..
  8. Absolutely------I have received 3-4 emails (one today) telling me that Mars is getting close to earth and will appear almost as large as the Moon this next month. The problem is it happened two years ago and it only appeared as a very bright star, not the size of the moon--- thank goodness. If true we would change orbit and the tide situation would be insane. Can't believe people believe and forward these crazy things, especially these goofy political ones that appear.
  9. ----Uniforms aren't all about looks.....Many coaches and QBs like white (especially helmets) so that QBs can quickly spot receivers down the field. Note: the Cowboys always wore white Jerseys unless forced to do otherwise and Indy (who has Manning and once had J. Unitas) wear white helmets and pants-- and are known for their passing game. Dark jerseys (especially Aggies maroon are good for RBs and QB to disguise the location of the ball during handoffs. I suppose Green ( which blends in with the field color) helps a defensive back not be spotted by theopponents QB when he is under pressure.
  10. ---This an example of goofy stats........ If they rated us (Sun Belt) on non-conf. ONLY games we would be near the top... When you rate conference teams low to start with then consider we play many games against each other of course we would rate extremely low on strength of schedule...... ---"Pussy- Cat" non-conf schedule for this year has to be Texas Tech...........Florida International, Sam Houston State and Indiana State....... all were I-AA last year and Fla.Int. is now making the transition to I-A and will not be all that strong this year. Five of the first six Tech games are home games. Their coaching should be shot and hung if they fail to have a winning season. Baylor is not much better... they play SMU, Army, and Samford (a I-AA team from Georgia, not Stamford). A&M's non-conf is a "little better"--SMU, Texas State and Clemson (good but not rated). Meanwhile we have: LSU, Kansas State, LaTech and Tulsa.......much more difficult non-conf games than they have....The bad news for them is they have Texas and OU as a conf. foes. ____________________________ ****LSU is rated #16 in preseason AP and ESPN polls....much below what we have seen lately in game #1.
  11. Be careful... this seems to fit (received as an email) __________________________________________ RETIREMENT It is important for men to remember, that as women grow older it becomes harder for them to maintain the same quality of housekeeping as when they were younger. When you notice this, try not to yell at them. Some are oversensitive and there's nothing worse than an oversensitive woman. My name is George...... Let me relate how I handled the situation with my wife, Julie. When I took "early retirement" last year, it became necessary for Julie to get a full-time job, both for extra income and for the health benefits that we needed. Shortly after she started working I noticed she was beginning to show her age. I usually get home from the Golf Course about the same time she gets home from work. Although she knows how hungry I am, she almost always says she has to rest for half an hour or so before she starts dinner. I don't yell at her. Instead, I tell her to take her time and just wake me when she gets dinner on the table. I generally have lunch in the Men's Grill at the club so eating out is not reasonable. I'm ready for some home cooked grub when I hit that door... She used to do the dishes as soon as we finished eating. But now, it's not unusual for them to sit on the table for several hours after dinner. I do what I can by diplomatically reminding her several times each evening that they won't clean themselves. I know she appreciates this, as it does seem to motivate her to get them done before she goes to bed. I really think my experience as a manager helps a lot. I consider telling people what they ought to do one of my strong points... Now that she has gotten older, she does seem to get tired so much more quickly. Our washer and dryer are in the basement. Sometimes she says she just can't make another trip down those steps. I don't make a big issue of this; as long as she finishes up the laundry the next evening, I'm willing to overlook it. Not only that, but unless I need something ironed to wear to the Monday lodge meeting, or to Wednesday's or Saturday's poker club, or to Tuesday's or Thursday's bowling, or something like that, I will tell her to wait until the next evening to do the ironing.. This gives her a little more time to do some of those odds and ends like shampooing the dog, vacuuming or dusting... Also, if I had a really good day on the course and it was wet and muddy, my clubs are a mess, so I let her clean them, you know.....get the grit off the grips and a little light Brillo on the club faces at a casual pace. My golf bag is heavy so I lift it out of the trunk for her. Women are delicate, have weak wrists and can't lift heavy stuff as good as men. But I did tell her I don't like to be wakened during my after-golf nap, so rather than bother me, she can put them back in the trunk when she's finished. Another symptom of aging is complaining, I think. For example, she will say that it is difficult for her to find time to pay the monthly bills during her lunch hour. But boys, we take em for better or worse, so I just smile and offer encouragement. I tell her to stretch it out over two or even three days. That way she won't have to rush so much. I also remind her that missing lunch completely now and then wouldn't hurt her any (if you know what I mean). I like to think tact is one of my strong points. When doing simple jobs, she seems to think she needs more rest periods. She had to take a break when she was only half finished mowing the yard. I try not to make a scene. I'm a fair man. I tell her to fix herself a nice, big, cold glass of freshly squeezed lemonade and just sit for a while. And, as long as she is making one for herself, she may as well make one for me too, and then take her break by my hammock. That way she can talk with me until I fall asleep. I know that I probably look like a saint in the way I support Julie. I'm not saying that showing this much consideration is easy. Many men will find it difficult. Some will find it impossible! Nobody knows better than I do how frustrating women get as they get older. However, guys, even if you just use a little more tact and less criticism of your aging wife because of this article, I will consider that writing it was well worthwhile. After all, we are put on this earth to help each other... Signed, George EDITOR'S NOTE: George died suddenly Thursday Feb.3. He was found with a Calloway extra long 50 inch Big Bertha Driver II rammed up his posterior, with only 2 inches of grip showing.. His wife Julie was arrested, but the all-woman Grand Jury accepted her defense that he accidentally sat on it, and died.
  12. Cobbs is too small...???? From last years program.... 5'9".... 205 ___________________________________ From Yahoo profiles: Ladamian Tomlinson.... 5"10".... 221 Priest Holmes ..... 5'9".... 213 Shawn Alexander.... 5'11"...225 Tiki Barber .....5'10"... 200 Brian Westbrook... 5'10".... 205 Clinton Portis..... 5'11".... 208 Michael Bennett...5"9"..... 209 Rudy Johnson .... 5'10"....220 Tatum Bell ..... 5"11"....213 Julius Jones .... 5'10".... 205 plus Emmit Smith and Walter Peyton were not all that large ( the two with the most yards ever) ------Unless that NT program exagerates a lot..... he is large enough to be successful. This a list of pretty good current RBs and most aren't that much larger plus Cobbs will likely increase in weight some.
  13. Let us hope that after this season over we have a QB that makes us think of Byerly as a future TE or other position. (if he is ever elgible again) I want an intelligent QB.
  14. objection.......!!! I hoping there is an explosion in the near future when Fouts disappears from the face of the earth will be deafening.!!
  15. It shows that patience pays off.... and not always the best "person" in the contest wins everytime. He failed to win his first 200+ attempts but finally won. ...Never give up... We can win games we are not expected to win.......
  16. It is good to be the target instead of the near automatic win..
  17. ---Just a guess on my part but I am guessing that Meager will start the season and by the end someone else (a freshman) will be seeing a lot of playing time. Who plays may depend on what type of defense we are playing against. A QB with limited passing skills will be fine when the running game is working but if it isn't then someone with good passing skills will be needed. I expect to see 2-3 QBs with a fair amount of playing time. I just hope we can find one (or two) who can handle the pressure of the first two games. The first is against a very tough team and the second is a "need to win" game.
  18. .....and for that I am eternally grateful. I proudly (did you hear that Rick? I said PROUDLY) call myself a liberal, and I hung out with a lot of hippies back in those days. But for the life of me I will NEVER understand why the administration allowed the "flower child" faction to make a decision about the name of the school's mascot. Organizing "Earth Day" activities is as about as much as they should have been allowed to do.
  19. ----I grew up in Brownwood and have heard Gordon Wood say several times that he prefered to have take a smart kid with good abilities and make a QB of him rather than a kid that had "great" abilities that was not that great of a student. The QB position is all about decisions and a "dumb" one will make dumb decisions plus not have the respect and leadership qualities that an intellegent one will have. Guess he knew what he was talking about.. he sure won a lot. ---Where I live now we had a QB one year with great skills but dumb as a goat (and a semi-outlaw)... We went 0-10 and some of his decisions were awful. ____________________________________ --------I think Scrappy became Eppy during the 70's (Scrappy looked and sounded too violent, LOL, politically correctness) Then later became Scappy again later. Dumb deal....
  20. .....The National Inquirer makes up stories...... OH NO.!!!!...... At least I can depend of the "World News Weekly" to tell me the truth facts of World events...... Anyone know when Bush is meeting with those space aliens again?
  21. ----It appears that USC will start the year in the NCAA football "Yellow Jerseys" this year. Personally I doubt anyone will make up any time on them either. Too many bodies return for the 2005 ride..
  22. ----I doubt that the name Mean Green could have been copywrited. Mascots etc are used by many schools and doubt anyone owns rights to their name. The three most common in Texas are Eagles, Lions and Bulldogs and most schools that use then have existed since the 20's or 30's when schools first adopted names. Monahans in West Texas also uses the term Mean Green some in addition to Lobos.
  23. Cuts them..... ???? I knew I lived in WestTexas for a good reason.... I have heard of that only once.... probably someone from Dallas must have been in town. In my opinion the gasoline price should include water, air and window cleaning fluid. Most places when they close remove the hoses. (easy) 24 hour places usually have them visible from inside. I hope Dallas area restaurants don't rent you glasses and charge you for water when you eat. [Why would you go to a place that charges for air/water when the place down the street charges nothing and has the same price for gas?] __________________ ---Gasoline funny..... Today my wife notices a grocery store [ HEB] has gas for $2.06 [ it is $2.29 across the street]. She decided to buy a few items first and comes out 15 min later..... The price has jumped to $2.19 in 15 min. Should have brought before she went in instead of after. Still cheaper though...... and they do have free air. We could all be rich if we bought oil stocks about 5 years ago [before Bush was elected].
  24. I refuse to buy gasoline from a station that changes for air when there are stations nearby that don't. Not many in West Texas charge but it seems that most near Dallas do.
