  1. ---Agree.. that is probably one of the stupidest thing any coach ever did. ---Some of the Training Camp sites that the Cowboys used weren't all that bright either (Wichita Falls in July--geeez). Landry and now Parcell picked rather cool areas to work near San Francisco and learn instead of seeing how many players they could kill off instead in 100+ Texas. ---I actually went to the Junction site this Summer for the first time.... It is now owned by Texas Tech and they were having summer classes there..... geology and others. Nice place now.
  2. Agree.... UT today just increased coaches salery "a ton". http://sports.yahoo.com/ncaaf/news?slug=uw...uwire&type=lgns
  3. ---Thanks ... unrelated but I see Rex Grossman broke his leg and is gone for the year... Guess what--- Chad Hutcheson appears to be QB in Chicago now. Lord help them.
  4. ---Coach you are probably right about the indoor facilities being built largly with donations. I think new and large weightroom facilities here were contructed pretty much the same way... mostly donations. ---Now maybe NT can get out there and find someone with a lot of money to give away.... while donations are still tax deductable...... that is on the table in Washington as well (eliminating donation deductions was in Bush speech last week). First we need a stadium however. ---I understand the safety issue.... Midland Lee had a football player picked off by lightening about 30 years ago.. The coaches fortunately had already dismissed the players but one was hit directly before he made it to the building. Even a coach I taught with was struck in his front yard, .... Amazingly he he was ok..... goofy for a couple of weeks but he did come back to work and was fine. He thinks it probably hit a steel post about a foot from him but he was knocked out and really messed up for a while. His hand was on the post.
  5. ---Amen Coach.. You obviously work in education... some posters are thinking I am getting too political... Really I am just telling the truth. Perry has been the worst enemy education has ever had. (Dolph Briscoe years ago was close). ---Mad hatter... name one US representative that is not from a town 100,000 or larger, Other than district 1 in far East Texas there are now almost none that well represent or speak for agricultural interests which is a big deal in this state.. Those sessions were about redistricting the US Congressinal districts and improving DeLay's situation not State legislative ones. Those guys left the state after Perry stated he would send the Texas Rangers after them if they "broke" quorems. He was the FIRST Governor ever to threaten representatives or State Senators that way. By leaving the state the Rangers could not reach them. Those special sessions are his (and Delay's) fault, not the members of the Legislature of either party. ---Tradtionally until then to break quorem they just stayed in their offices, the coffee shop, or at home. It has ALWAYS been a common practice to do that. When Perry ordered the Texas Rangers to drag them out of Ardmore, the Oklahoma Gov. stated if they came he would have them arrested for kidnapping. Your profile shows you are rather young.. You don't realize what Perry has done that others have never done before. Public Education is really getting screwed over, including University funding which has caused all these tuition increases. ---North Texas and other universities have increased tuition and have been hurting because of his actions... "This topic is very NT related and affects our funding". These sessions are about cutting taxes on property which really helps those with huge property interests (Ross Perot and others) . It is not about helping education and it will not help the average person because of increases in sales taxes will offset the difference. Coach--- I work in education as well and my salery is also funded by local and state tax money. Perry is messing with us everyway possible, many schools will now not even have needed textbooks when school begins because of his crazyness. These sessions and the last ones have spent money needed for schools and univerities. The only reson for these sessions is Perry vetoed the education/budget bill passed in regular session (by BOTH parties). If you think this is political.. check out what I am saying. Everything is true.
  6. ---If every place paid the same then about no one would teach in Van Horn, Marfa or some of these really remote places. That is what attracts people to go there......more pay. ---Midland has a harder time attracting young teachers than McKinney for example. College towns usually pay less because a lot of people want to teach there (hubby in school, can work on advanced degrees, more fun things to do, etc.)
  7. -----{ Now they are rolling in the money. They have so muh money that they do not know what to do with it. So they build things like indoor practice facilities because what else are they gonna spend it on? }---- ---Again this is the reason that ROBIN HOOD exists. There are districts that are taxing to the maximum rate but have such a low tax base that don't have money to replace school-buildings that are falling down. That idea may not be done correctly but something is needed to help those areas. ---If the school districts mentioned and shown above have that much money surplus they should cut taxes, --each Independent School District sets their own rates, especially if the taxes are that high. They apparently have so much surplus cash that they are not passing bonds to build these things and are just using available cash. The individual school boards are responsible then, not the state.
  8. ---I am pretty sure that "Indians" is a variety of peaches. I haven't seen it in a while but it was when I was a kid ( my parents had several trees of them ). Guess that makes you a fruit as well..... LOL. ---Now you won't need to change your name just use a guy dressed as a peach as a mascot.
  9. ----I am shocked at that theft...... At least we used something very original...... Eagles. --To be politically and socially correct I guess we will next have to use to Fruit or Veggie mascots.. NT Green Beans, MTSU Blue-berries or LSU Pussy-Willows. Surely they can't object ...much.
  10. ---The legislature passed a budget which included education in the regular session.... but Perry vetoed it and starting calling special sessions... expensive. Blame him. ---In 2003 Perry called all those sessions to redistrict the state and increase his party's power.... besides the opposition l party losing in the deal, there now are almost no representatives that represent rural Texas anymore. Meanwhile colleges and public schools are getting their budgets trimmed.
  11. ----Lottery income goes into the "general fund" and education expensives are paid from this fund ... as is prisons, highways etc. Techically they are correct Lottery money does go to education but education spending has not increased like the expensive of prisons etc. If what I read a few days ago is true Texas has more people in prisons than Vermont and Alaska has people. That is the problem with being a border state and the drug traffic..... that problem also costs us and education a lot of money. The prison population is many times what it was 30 years ago. The state only has so much money available... the US government is different (they control the mint) and has overspent 19 of the last 25 years with six (6) balanced budgets ( actually surpluses) during the 90's.
  12. ---You are probably right about I-A colleges.. but those facilities were mostly built with alum donations not tax money unless they are using them for many other purposes and I don't any problem with that. I don't know where you are reading but a HS with indoor practice facilities are rather unusual, maybe not in your neighborhood, but most places they are. ---Next time you support more tax cuts (especially state ones) what you are supporting is less money available to public schools and colleges. The last Texas session in 2003 cut university funding by $700,000,000 so universities were forced to increase tuition to MAINTAIN their condition. Colleges are having to get more agressive in seeking donations now to offset those reductions. The problem now is there is talk by those in Washington to eliminate donations (also mortgage interest) deductions which will reduce the incentive to make donations to education (and athletics). Please think when you vote what the eventual outcome means. God know what those loons will do this time..... all Perry wants to do is cut more taxes, not help education. Only one state collects less taxes per capita than us now.
  13. ---I don't know of a single indoor practice area in West Texas (except Texas Tech). Most teams practice in the morning and late evening. it is really hot but only for about a month and most coaches use their heads and consider the temperature when scheduling activities. A few activities can be held in the gym when neccessary. ---Schools have a lot of other needs... including text-books which the state government (the last two governors especially) have red-lined from the budget several times. The last time I looked the history textbooks being used listed George Bush as President (the first one). I love football but what happens in the classroom deserves some priority. Again I love football but school is not ALL about football or sports. ____________ **** The above list of schools explains why the "ROBIN HOOD" tax program came into existence. Some school districts can spend money on a building to keep their tough football players in the cool while some districts can't even build decent classrooms and put good supplies in the classrooms. ________________________ ---We need a new stadium.!!! ---not a practice facility that is only needed a few days a year.
  14. ----Can't read this.....without signing up. I am aware that a person suggested we post links instead of articles and the reason why... but when it can't be read without signing in ---maybe the article should be posted anyway, especialy from a source that is a likely one time deal anyway.
  15. ---500,000.?? One thing for sure there are a lot of people in the area. Filling the stadium with fans should not be a problem if we can ever get "name" teams to appear in Denton. .... a vicious circle...... few fans in attendence, no stadium and no name teams.... Get a larger better stadium somehow and the other two things should take care of themselves. ---For years (decades) UT and Aggies played on Thanksgiving. I don't think they do anymore because of the two NFL games (Cowboys every year) now play on Thankgiving plus many families like to meet on Thanksgiving Day. I think they now play only on Friday or Sat. Army/Navy is usually that week-end too.
  16. This appears on Yahoo.... taken from Ft. Worth Star Telegram apparently. It contains some comments from Dickey and some others. http://sports.yahoo.com/ncaaf/news?slug=kn...night&type=lgns
  17. NO SPOTS LEFT--Unless someone changes theri mind and withdraws later...
  18. ---Not a bad deal... I expect that we will lose one or two that we shouldn't and may win one (K-State) that we don't expect to win. ---That is why the games are played......I don't expect to sneak up of LSU but I hope we keep can it reasonable. It will take a very bad day by them and rather good day by us to pull off an upset so I am happy with a reasonable score. --- We look rather unpredictable...... Our RBs will excell with a good line but do we have one? An average QB who can throw will keep the opposition honest and let us hope that works out as well.
  19. We still want two competitive players... we have 12 which joined about a month ago when Yahoo opened up..
  20. ---The metroplex and bumper to bumper driving drives me nuts now. Out here (West Texas ) people think close counts when it comes to green lights. Better look both ways after it changes because a lot of folks just go through them after they change. ---The most dangerous item are women 18-40 with a SUV and a cell phone. They seem to think lights and stop signs disappear when they are on a a cell-phone, then they look at you like you are an idiot when you almost run into them. --[no I am not a chauvenist pig...well not too much]
  21. ---Texas recently withdrew the offer for several colleges due to lack of "sales" or interest. Interesting to note on the professional list there isn't one for the Spurs (NBA Champs) or Rockets and no baseball ones for Astros or Rangers. --and yes I have a UNT one. _____________________ Stang----I realize you aren't really a native Texan but putting anything extra on a license plate is considered illegal (especially if it is something to alter a "number"). I do see a few small longhorn stickers on them but if you get stopped you can are likely to get ticketed.... besides it provides another excuse for them to stop you.
  22. We have 12 members in a 14 team league.. need two more competive people __________________________________________________________. League # 156 Password: northtexas (one word, no caps) I think all members are North Texas former students. Same setting as Yahoo except: 1. 14 teams everyone plays everyone once and one team twice (first and last week) 2. one position added, a RB/WR position, and one WR positon changed to WR/TE 3. bench is 5 instead of 6 to stop rat-holing and to increase available list slightly. (14 players more) 4. Points given for return yards, 20 yards gives 1 point, same as running or receiving yards. [again adds a few more players worth drafting inc Dante Hall, often these are #3 receivers] ________________________________________________________ If you have never done this before it makes NFL games more fun to watch since your points are based on how well your players do.. I promise to not draft Rickey Williams.. you can have him.
  23. ---Joe Greene....great player and class person. It would be interesting to see Joe and Cedric Hardeman side by side again. We will survive very well with a decent QB considering our running game. Ramsey would be fun to see again though. ---I am wondering how often we will see both Cobbs and Jamario together in the backfield... will we see the 2-back pro set used so much suring the 70's by the NFL? It is not that dated of an offense at least at the college level. Running something slightly different that most teams run can be an advantage since the opposing defenses are not that accustomed to seeing it..
