  1. Good get for SMU.

Sorry, but I can't pat SMU on the back too much on the GMG.com board. Let the Ponyfans do that... So, I'm going to hijack this thread and make it about Mean Green basketball.

With our class ace Jordan Williams down at Kimball now, I'm hoping he gets into Jarion Henry's ear and convinces him to come up for a visit.

Are we not going after Keaton Miles? I haven't heard anything about him around here.

And finally, with the addition of C. Jones to go along with Trey Norris, are we still going after Trey Davis?

  2. I also think it should be clarified that while the jaw is technically broken, it's a very small hairline fracture. Not that it makes any real difference, but when I heard "break" originally, I thought "broke in half."

    ***********************************************************

I'm not trying to defend Dunn here.

Huh? I mean seriously. Does it matter? If her jaw is broken, then her jaw is broken. That takes a pretty good slug... your jaw is bone!

When I was first married, my wife and I got into an enormous fight one night. My father was one of those guys that yelled and yelled so I tend to like to remove myself from those types of situations. Just my auto-response. As I was trying to remove myself, my wife got increasingly angry and kept grabbing me saying, "Don't you dare walk away from me while I'm talking to you." Finally, she grabbed me so hard that she pulled me down to the ground as I was walking away, causing me to hit my head on the way down. Never in my life have I felt the type of blood boiling rage that I felt at that moment. I put my fist through the wall right after that. Not once did it ever cross my mind to strike her, of course, but someone with lesser control might have. I don't know if Dunn's situation was remotely close to mine. It doesn't make it okay, no matter what happened. But I do know that when my wife later told my parents that I put my fist through a wall that night, everyone assumed that *I* had the anger problem. That frustrates me to this day as I have never in my life done anything like that before or after and also because I was trying to get away from the situation when it occurred and was, quite literally, dragged back into it.

Maybe LaceDarius should have excercised your kind of show of force, then restraint. Instead, he put his fist through her jaw. The dude should be put away. Normal guys like you or I would...

  3. I'm a big Jones fan. Great get for UNT. Always thought more of him than Gotcher, so I expect him to play well early, especially if his hand heals up properly. Good pull.

I actually like having you around. I know alot of people rag on you, but it's nice to see what a knowledgable SMU fan thinks of our class. I hope you stick around. You seem really connected to the local AAU circuit, so I hope to hear alot more from you in the coming month. We've got alot more targets & schollies!

  4. Any students out there seen Edwards at practice at all? How does he look? Is he gelling with the rest of the guys?

I thought Edwards was a face-to-the-basket kind of player and he was being turned into a back-to-the-basket player at Nebraska and he didn't like that. I can't imagine we'll see alot of post play from Edwards, unless he recently changed his mind. Not to say he'll never play back-to-the-basket, but he'll probably be on the wings alot looking for lanes, shots or a slashing TT/Josh/Dom.

  5. If you wanted to be real, you would understand that this team was 5-32 entering this season and had not won back to back games in the Dodge era.

Funny how you assume that the talent we had before the injuries would have magically blown out these first three conference opppnents when the same talent last year lost to all three.

Dude, please just admit you were wrong and give everyone some peace.

    ??

Riley, Tune, Thompson < Chase Baine?

    Johnson, Leppo < Aaron Fortenberry?

    DaWaylon Cook < John Shorter?

Stradford, Bynes < Willie Taylor, Brelan Chancellor?

I kinda think he's onto something... Completely ignoring the injuries is plain dumb. I totally agree that with a fully healthy team, we're 3-0 in conference play right now.

That said, Dodge is now up against the wall. At 1-5, his chances of reaching 6-7 wins are shrinking quickly. He needs to make lemonade.

  6. I think the only real threat is if North Texas goes to Baton Rouge and spanks the Tigers, then wins conference again and shows up in the NCAA's. LSU may fire their staff, and Johnny would probably bolt to LSU even if they only offer him a five dollar bill. We all know about the Auburn offer that was shunned. I think Johnny has his eye on one job only... in the meantime, he's doing great things for UNT!

  7. What does any of this have to do with Drew? The kid screwed up. That has nothing to do with the coach. Coach can't be there 24/7. And it's Lace's first offense ever. It's not like he had a long list of issues before he was recruited and the coach risked it anyways.

As to the sarcastic remarks about Drew, I would love for someone, anyone, to post a recruiting infraction that Drew has committed. Go ahead. I'll wait.

Actually, I won't wait because I'd be waiting for a very long time. Truth of the matter is, Drew has always been a stud recruiter. He pulled in Top 25 classes to Valpo, a school that averaged maybe 3000 in attendance in a conference no one around here knows exists. No one accused him of cheating then. Everyone thought he was great. He comes to the Big 12 and is put in a situation where every rival coach was telling recruits and their mamas not to go to Baylor because you'll be shot. Never mind that it was under a previous coach, with completely different players, under completely different circumstances.

So, yes, Drew had to do some negative recruiting in his early days and that pissed folks off. Of course, they didn't see themselves as recruiting negatively towards BU, but we'll just ignore that. Add to it that Drew never played basketball at anything beyond the junior high level. Throw in that he pissed off Coach Knight with a flyer that was factually true and he heard a lot of hate from Coach Knight supporters (including media types). Yes, at one point he hired someone's AAU coach when it was perfectly legal to do so.

But at the end of the day, nothing Drew did was illegal or an infraction, yet people drag him through the mud all the same.

    North Texas > Baylor.

  8. I have always taken the view that T-shirt fans are fine--as long as you don't put another team above your alma mater. I grew up a huge Kansas Jayhawk fan. Obviously, that has worked out great for me in hoops, not so much in footbal over the last 30+ years. I wear KU gear from time to time, but when KU and UNT play each other, there is no pull for me to cheer against my alma mater at all. The problem most of us have with T-shirt alumni isn't supporting another school you like. But, when OU, UT, A&M, or Tech play UNT and the alumni of UNT openly cheer for those other schools because they are cool, they have history, they have a winning team currently, or because Grandma is from there, that is where the line gets crossed.

MeanGreenTexan Storytime (ignore if you don't like heartwarming stories about the Mean Green):

I grew up a UT fan my whole life. My uncle graduated from there. When I came to UNT, I must admit I fell into that trap and would wear my UT cap all the time(everyone else was doing it!!). I went to a few UNT games and was very excited about our team getting to the NO bowl in 2001 after "The Miracle in the Desert". In 2002, I went down and visited some friends in Austin and went to the UNT game there. I was going to root for UT AND UNT at the same time.

Once there, I couldn't make myself wear burnt orange. I wore red. Neutral. UT was playing well and we couldn't get anything going in the first half. By the 2nd quarter, my heart was tugged and I began pulling for North Texas in my head and under my breath, trying to stay neutral on the outside. By the time we sacked Sims for the 4th or 5th time in the 3rd quarter, I was openly pulling for my alma mater and was rubbing-in the fact that Benson was going nowhere on my defense, and that Booger was going to be in Sims' nightmares that night. I got razzed a little by the longhorn students around, and my friends were shocked that I would root against UT, but mostly there was alot of, "Hey, your defense is really good..." and "Good luck the rest of the year...". Then, after the game I remember Davis saying that the UNT defense didn't deserve any credit and that they beat themselves on offense. That was all I needed to hear. My heart belonged to the Mean Green Eagles from that day forward.

I still pull for the Longhorns as well, though I don't like Davis. I was going crazy when Vince ran in to seal the Rose Bowl game. I think Barnes is a brilliant b-ball coach.

I don't own any Longhorns apparel, so I can't be a T-Shirt alum, but I have somewhat of an allegiance to them. I'm a FAN of Texas.

I own all kinds of UNT gear. I'm an actual alumnus. I have a diploma that I'm incredibly proud of. I AM Mean Green

I wish all of the other UNT alumns had the kind of experience I did. I'm glad I have you guys to share my love with.

Maybe winning a few ballgames will give some students that experience.

  9. Really anxious about today. On paper, this is ours, but it all comes down to CJ's control and command.

I too am a little anxious about CJ. I'm betting that the anxiousness is heightened in TB right now. How much confidence would you have in Shields?

CJ likes to get up for big games. I think he'll be fine... but if he starts getting hit, get him out ASAP because he seems to rattle quickly.

Gotta believe that the Rangers hitters are locked-in right now and are licking their chops to get at Shields.
