  1. -1's!!!

Damn, this is back-firing...come on people! I'm wasting your time and making a mockery of KingDL1...let the rage flow!

OK. I treated your pandering like I do KING's and gave you a -1 on your first post. I think it's cheating to post multiple posts with the same pics.

Can you dig over to Rayzor Ranch and take some shots down there too?

  2. PS: OK, if Canales beats KSU after a run through a very weak 2010 Sun Belt Conference you put him right up there with the top 3 or 4 coaches with Name ID and FBS HFC experience. UNT cannot afford a "shoot from the hip" kind of hire because a few on this board get off on post game pep rallies. Last time I checked, such things as that never really got coaches hired at FBS schools, especially at this very important and crucial time of our own school's athletic history.

    GMG!!

OK. After twisting your arm, I think we wound up on the same page. I agree (and I think most of us here do as well) that the win over WKY does not vault coach Canales to frontrunner status. But, give him time to see what he can do here... I think he's due that consideration.

  3. Unlike KingDL1, I don't have a plane, high-powered camera, or pilot's licence...

What I do have though is a shovel, a disposable Fuji and a little bit of good old-fashion American ingenuity and elbow grease.

Do I give you a +1 or a -1 for this cutting edge investigation? I like what you're doing here.

  4. Even outside GMG.coms Who To Hire Poll by Harry which is as much a mandate for a HFC with name or FBS HFC experience as what the Republicans and Independents pulled off Tuesday.

Sure, the handful (and I think looking a the poll that best describes it) on GMG.com who want another project will no longer change their minds on Canales than the majority of us in the poll would change ours as we prefer another direction that has worked before at UNT. Some of you who have obviously gotten to meet and greet with Canales have all but lost your objectivity about this hire and seem to have forgotten what has "NOT" worked in Denton for the last 3 plus decades.

It's not any of our's hire as it is: UNT officials will decide on one that meets the full meal deal criteria of which most who voted on this board still think is the coach with name ID or FBS experienced HFC. If we were going to stay at Fouts Field another 10 years then gamble with project hires till the cows come home but Fouts Field will soon become powdered concrete. We have this new football palace debuting that needs to make us really start getting serious about now climbing up the NCAA FBS totem pole--if not, then what a waste of money many will say.

But what kind of coach gets the borderline/average college football fan in and around Denton excited to give all this yet another try or chance? (They've had so many others that did not pan out for UNT and we've all seen them come and go once they saw what we had hired once again that was no different than all the others).

I think pressure from Big and Small Donors will keep Canales from getting this job and Rick V has to answer to (especially) the Big Donors (of which I'm not) and the Board of Regents with this next most crucial hire and I can't see our "always thinking ahead" UNT AD taking a professional gamble on any assistant coach from a losing program this season or the last 6 seasons for other UNT assistants (DeLoach?) who still might decide to apply.

Both Coach Frans on the same staff at UNAT is my shot in the dark choice, but I think 2 or 3 others with the right background would be fine, too. (That small group has very high numbers of votes in Harry's poll).

    GMG!

    ???

It's a simple question PMG: If Canales runs the table for the remainder of the year, would you consider him a frontrunner for HC?

  5. Harry's Voting Poll thread still suggests the majority on GMG.com want the name or (at least) experienced FBS HFC to take this job, but at UNT and looking at our past mistakes in hiring, the obvious too many times can become a huge obstacle in Mean Green Country.

My vote in that poll is for Fran. I will stand by that vote. However, IF UNT were to win 3 of the remaining 4, I would waver on this. IF UNT were to win out, I think my mind would be changed.

Is that fair? Would you be on board with this, or would you still like to run Chico off in favor of Fran, Leavitt, etc...?

  6. 17 home games including the exhibition and 11 of those are on weeknights/weekdays. Maybe there's a mini-plan to cover the 6 games that are on weekends.

It's really not that big of a drag to drive to Denton on a weeknight to make a 7pm tip, unless you live on the south side of Dallas or work until 6-7pm. Maybe Chuck Neinas(sp?) was on to something when he said Denton's 30 miles from Dallas, but Dallas is 200 miles from Denton (or something like that).

I make the round trip drive daily from Denton to Garland (right around 78 & PGBT). I get off work around 4:30-5, stop by my house, get the boys ready and head to the Pit with plenty of time to eat our pizza and let the boys play on the bounce house before making our way to our seats to hear the starting lineups.

Agree. And looking at our member map, it appears there are very few people in DFW who live south of I-30.

  7. Please, I would own you in a -1 contest...like how the Sandinista National Liberation Front now owns dead Ronald Reagan's head and uses it as a hand-puppet to promote gay marriage, drug use, rock music and Shanice Stephens.

Already pandering for -1s? Game on?

I'm so interested to watch this train wreck. To me, this will be the most epic GMG.com battle of all time.

I've already started both of you on your way... -1 to each of you. Good luck be unto you both. :clapping:

  8. I think a general consensus from most of us is:

Let's see what coach Canales can do and compare with what the other coaching candidates have done/can do. We need a bigger sample from coach Canales. Personally, I think 6 games will be plenty.

I'd love to see him win out and put the coaching search to bed myself. For now, this is still a possibility, but with each loss, his chances will get smaller and smaller.

  9. Thought I read on here that Dodge/Rick V/someone said they were hoping to get a medical redshirt for him since he was on the field for, what, 2 plays?

But I guess my question is:

If he is able to go now but the coaches intentionally hold him out, is he actually eligible for a medical redshirt? Seems like the NCAA would see that we are just trying to skirt around the rules and not allow him to have the redshirt?

I could understand if he broke his leg and was out for the rest of the season, but if he's ready to go now...?

  10. I disgagree.

If this is the case then why not drop down to Div II (or whatever it is) so we can win? If it is solely about winning that gets everyone on board then this should work right??

Winning is important but almost equally as important is the quality of those wins.

Because we're sucking in the SBC I refuse to use it as a barometer because as soon as we start winning we become content...until, of course, we start losing again.

I'm not saying that. I think I would rather lose every game every year in 1-a/FBS (think Eastern Michigan) than go back to 1-aa/FCS again.

I think from where we are right now, a win against TROY would be a quality win. Do you disagree with that?

Now, once we start beating everyone in the SBC again (because this WILL happen), creeping into the top 25 polls and such, then we can start talking about moving conferences and all of that stuff.

Speak for yourself when becoming content if we win in the SBC. I would want to push for bigger and better things if we can win here consistently. The key word is consistently. Look at TCU, they're beating everyone pretty consistently now. In doing so, they're garnering interest from the Big East. Maybe they'll get an invite? Do you think they started out when Gary Patterson took over thinking, "What can we do to get to the Big East? Since, barometrically, we think we're on par with the Pitt's of the college football world." No. They took it a game at a time and built up a winner in the MWC. The rest will take care of itself for them.

I know the University of North Texas can do the same thing.

  11. When you aren't winning your league and having a 6 year window when you don't get to 15 wins total - you're damn right the SBC is a good barometer for success. Maybe if we win the conference a few times we can set different expectations, but damn. Reality check is right.

I can't agree with this more.

Dominate the Belt like everyone's favorite comparison, Boise St. is dominating their conference, then we can talk about upgrading barometers to the non-mercury, all-digital barometer.

  12. What do y'all think?

    I'm going to say:

    UNT - 24

    Troy - 34

It should be a good game, but I'm expecting Troy to be focused against us after what happened to them last week. MT lost last night, so they should have their sights back on the conf. championship.

If Canales can get the guys ready to play and prove me wrong (I hope they do!), then this board will be crazy next week.

  13. After the Clemson game there were reports that he was out for the year. Then, there were reports that he would be ready after 6 weeks.

Does anyone know if Steven Ford is ready to return? If so, will he, or will they try and get him a redshirt?

Can you get a medical redshirt if you are healthy enough to play but the coaching staff holds you out? Obviously, by starting the Clemson game, a normal redshirt is out the window...

  14. do you think any so called name canidates could beat troy and k.state at home, mtsu and monroe on the road with this years crippled team? i don't think so. so why demand coach chico do it?just asking.

Dodge was held to that standard. He couldn't do it, so his termination was justifiable.

Why not Canales? Are you worried that he cannot do it? Why don't we just wait and find out if he's up to that challenge or not?

If he's a good coach and can get the guys on the team to respond to him, then they'll win. In that scenario, PLEASE give coach Canales a very serious look.

If he cannot, they'll lose 3 or more and we need to look elsewhere.

  15. Is there the possibility that RV brought in Canales this season as an opportunity to get an upclose look at what he could do as OC and HC (if he was hedging his bets on releasing Dodge mid-season)? I thought it was interesting at the time that Canales would move to Texas for a 1yr turn as an OC on a very down FBS team.

    (can't forget this)

    No. Dodge brought Canales here.

  16. 1) Is there a number of wins ultimatum during his stint as interim coach?

    2) If yes to Question 1, then what is that number? and what game(s) does he need to win?

    3) If no to Question 1, why not?

    4) Is there a way or part of the game that you would expect to see managed and/or performed differently under Canales than Todd?

    5) Do you feel that Canales can turn the recruiting around, and begin getting more legitimate players like they did and currently do at USF?

    6) IF Canales were named Head Coach after his interim stint, what current assistant coaches would you like to see stay? Which ones would you like to see go?

    7) Do you feel that Canales is a legitimate candidate right now?

    8) Million Dollar Question. Do you have the confidence that if Canales performed well the rest of the year (up to your personal standard, whatever that may be) that he would be able to lead the program from 2011 forward as any other potential candidat?

Good Survey! Insightful questions. I'll give it a go:

1 & 2) I would like to see him get 4 out of 5 (He already has 1). If 3 out of 5, then KSt. must be one of them. This, to even be considered...

    3) If he fails to win 3 games, then I think we can do better.

    4) I expect to see all aspects of the game improve if he is to be considered for the HC position. Offense/Defense/ST's/clock mgmt/player mgmt...

    5) Not right now. But if he starts to win (especially if he beats KSt.), then maybe.

    6) I'm not married to any of them. What coach Gandy is doing on the recruiting trail in MS and LA is pretty impressive. I think I would like for him to stick around, but not as ST's coach. Go back to coaching RB's only. Sounds like DLo is already gone after this season. I would want him to keep the guys that the players are responding to best. If he knows other coaches who could come in and do better, then by all means, bring them in.

    7) Not right now. Win against Troy and I would START to consider him.

    8) Yes.

  17. ...I'm not saying that the job should be handed over to Coach Canales on a silver platter after this one win. But he needs to be considered very seriously if he can find at least two more wins. If someone else is hired simply to make a "splash," and that guy goes on to fizzle out like every coach I have ever seen at North Texas, I will be upset that we let a winner go.

I would push this number to 3, and give extra consideration if one of the 3 is KSt. End the year 4-2 with the 2 losses being competitive and I'll pay closer attention to what RV does with coach Canales.

I also think our last "splash" hire was based on our smaller budget. All indications show that we are going to up our coaching staff pay scale to compete with the big boys as far as "mid-majors" go. This pay scale should provide a bigger splash with better wake afterwards.

I'm beginning to wonder if coach Canales would remain if we were to hire Leavitt. If he won't, then I'm not nearly as interested in Leavitt.

Chico appears to want to be a head coach. I don't know if he would want to step back behind Leavitt yet again.
