  1. Fine, you can tell me (as a donor) that I have no say in the hiring and firing of coaches, but I can also refuse to donate based on who is the current coach and let it be known that I will not donate until there is a replacement. We'll see who wins in the long run.

I'm sure a part of your job performance as an Athletic Director you are judged on retaining/expanding your donor base. If you start seeing a decrease in your donor base, you might start to think that maybe all those donors I lost were right when your raise wasn't what you were hoping 'cause your ability to keep your donor numbers up fell a little flat.

Just understand that I have something you want ... money to pay that coach you for some reason want to keep.

    PLEASE, EVERYONE UNDERSTAND THIS:

Regardless of how you feel about Dodge, Villareal, or anyone associated, please understand that when you withold supportive funding to the program (especially the MGC), you are throwing the baby out with the bathwater. No one sufferes more when you do that than the student-athletes. They don't deserve to have your frustrations taken out on them by reducing their scholly funds!!

UNTFan23, you're argument above completely overlooks this. I hope you reconsider.

Get on here and piss, moan, & complain all you want. Heck call for Dodge's head all you want, but to withold financial support to the students because you're not happy with the coaching situation is awful.

  2. Mean Green Nation,

The last time I attended a UNT football game, I made a drunken ass of myself. I drew the ire of donors and alumni alike, and I deserved it. Since then I've been listening and watching online away from the fray. UNT now finds itself in a crossroads, and this is where I find myself. I am a student in the #9 ranked program in the nation for graduate accounting in taxation, and they are trying to systematically kill me appropriately. I'm surviving with a good GPA, and I've got a couple really good interviews lined up. I've appreciated what the university has done for me. Really I want to support this university.

Now I've got to be honest. I stay at home listening to and watching this football program and I say things that would certainly get me thrown out of Fouts. For this reason, and my complete embarrassment for my behavior the last time I attended a game, I cannot attend another game during the Dodge era. For this I somewhat apologize, but I feel the way I feel.

That said, when I see the criticisms towards Rick, I cringe. I know Rick well, and he has done very well by this university. I will make no apologies for his hire in the football program, but nobody is more dedicated to its success that he is. I would cite this beautiful $68 million stadium that's starting to dominate the Denton skyline.

When a change in coaching staff is made, I'd like to experience the gameday atmosphere at UNT again. If you'll have me, I'll be there. If not, I understand.

    Sincerely,

    Tony

Are you grovelling to us? Who are we to grant you admittance? Just read the past few days threads. You have no reason to apologize for anything. We're all crazy. Now, get back in the stands ASAP so you can support the guys. Support the coaching staff or not...that's up to you.

  3. For those of us that are MGC Members (or thinking of joining), are you willing to donate more if we get a high profile coach, like a Mike Leach? OR If we hire another coach like a Dodge or Dickey, will you keep your donation the same or less????

Personally for me, I have reduced my MGC donation based upon the performance of the football team, right or wrong....that is my reasoning. If we hired someone like Leach (high profile), I am willing to make a pledge to increase my MGC donation.

    Honest question here:

Are coaches salaries determined by the MGC?

I thought this was solely for student schollies (my impression).

If No, then you lowered your giving to the scholarship fund for all student-athletes because of the product on the football field? This doesn't make much sense.

  4. I never officially adopted a player, but I think this is as good a thread as any to mention I love our DTs, and it looked like Jeremy Phillips was a beast yesterday.

I saw at least 3 missed tackles yesterday from Phillips that were just terrible. I like his potential, but he's got alot of improving to do.

  5. This whole thing went wrong in Year One when Dodge screwed over Daniel Meager for the sake of playing Giovanni Vizza.

I agree with this. Especially after the SMU game at Ford. Meager should have finished out that season. Bad decision by Dodge.

Then, he brought in his son and played up the fantasy that he was a college QB, running off Vizza.

I couldn't disagree with this more. Vizza saw someone coming in with all kinds of accolades, got scared, cut & run. The guy is a tiddy-sucker and I'm glad he's gone. Vizza was not "run off" by anyone but his own cowardice.

  6. Nothing good can come of leaving him on as an interim guy. Absolutely nothing positive. But it could work out to be a negative decision.

The most obvious one (to me) is Dodge's propensity to burn potential redshirts. Brelan Chancellor got his shirt burned today so he could execute a 2 yard punt return. Anyone who thinks Dodge saw Arkansas State last year as his last game and last shot at a win was particularly upset about the Derek Thompson decision because Dodge would never have to deal with the potential consequences. I don't want to open up that can of worms again... But if it had turned out to be Dodge's last game, the fallout would have been more real and justified than anything we heard about black jerseys.

I'm sure a lot of other people can point out other examples of guys who played a handful of snaps on special teams or got throw in the fire for no apparent reason late in the year as true freshmen. NT03 mentioned John Weber's action last year when I saw him at the Pourhouse today.

Anyway... When he's got nothing to lose for his own future, I don't want him determining the future eligibility of our players.

When we broke camp this year, we had Nathan Tune, Victor Gill, Esteban Santiago, and Craig Robertson starting as 5th year seniors. Whatever anyone may think about their performance so far, they were starters because the coach who inherited them chose to play them. And he had the choice to play them as 5th year seniors because the coach who recruited them allowed them to redshirt as freshmen.

I want to make sure that the next coach, if there is a next coach, gets the same opportunity to use as much of the talent on this roster as possible.

It's already too late for Aaron Bellazin, Brandin Byrd, Brelan Chancellor, Drew Miller, Zach Orr, Richard Abbe, Ryan Boutwell, Zach Olen, Jose Serrano, Derek Teegarden, and Will Wright.

But it's not too late for Ricky Broxton, John Dodson, Blake Dunham, Shelton Gandy, Jared Harrison, Graylan Hawkins, Joshua Hunt, Antonio Johnson, John Noble, Wesley Racht, Konockus Sashington, Nick Summerfield, James Tandy, and Mason Y'Barbo.

As soon as loss 6 hits, you appoint an interim and inform him that anyone who is still redshirt eligible (and the list is dwindling, just 3 games into the season) is untouchable. Because I don't trust Dodge to care about the long term future of this team if he's already been fired.

I think alot of these guys are playing not because Dodge enjoys burning redshirts, but because they are contributing/producing, or playing them was out of necessity:

Orr - I love what I'm seeing out of this guy.

Olen & Serano(who I thought already used a redshirt last year) - You have to try anything with this kicking game!

Byrd - touted as having a fantastic camp and can contribute to the team this year.

Wright - I'm not so sure we would have seen this guy if Ford didnt' go down.

I think I agree with your argument that if Dodge were to be fired, he should step down immediately (lest black jerseys and the like show up), but I don't think Dodge would do/has done that kind of stuff as a great big middle-finger to the program/fans. Nothing in his history has demonstrated that.

  7. Maybe ignored isn't the right use of wording, I don't know. What I do know is the preseason Doak Walker lister is not getting the ball. Everyone wants to know then, why is it that we have a system in which if you go by a certain read then it leads to the stud of the offense only carrying the ball 12 times? Seems if I'm a D coordinator I would simply give that read to you all day? Maybe with our second string QB coming in that is exactly what Army did. Make the backup whose starting his first game beat you? If so, we played right into their hands.

    Rick

    I'll bet you're right.

If that's the case, then the heat really needs to be turned up on Riley himself. He's supposed to be a playmaking difference-maker...a guy you want with the ball. He definitely was not that guy yesterday.

  8. I don't care what you think about my delivery. I care about voicing my displeasure with this football program. Again, I don't care about what you think, I care about UNT football.

I've never ignored anyone on this site before....until now. Your technique is not working.

  9. THIS is just another reason why I believe Canales is not completely in control of our offense. We tried that how many times last week vs. Rice? It worked so well then we decided to roll it out again today.

What a joke - losing 24-0 at Army is a JOKE.

Gotta believe that if coach Dodge is sabotaging coach Canales' playcalling, then Chico would up & quit himself. These play calls are Chico's. Sorry folks.

  10. What's interesting about this list is that Tim Brewster listed on hot seat #2 was a guy that had been mentioned as a possibility for our job before Dodge was hired. Also, has Butch Davis #4 ever really done anything? This guy has been living large off his stint as a Cowboys assistant back in the day.

    *Beat me to it GreenMean...

Butch Davis assembled all of that talent at Miami(FL) that Coker won with. He also coached in the NFL (although his stint there was not as good). He's a heckuva coach.

  11. New & Improved WilltoWin,

Many big things happened prior your colossal 180 in philosophy. We need to revisit some of your stances:

What are your thoughts on UNT joining the WAC?

What are your thoughts on Dr. Battaille's resignation?

What are your thoughts on the hiring of coach Canales?

What are your thoughts on the aesthetics of the Business building?

What are your thoughts on the phrase "Im not saying... I'm just saying"?

    What sucks?

What do you want to do instead?

    Thanks in advance.

  12. I'm thinking it is. If we can't beat Army - a school with an offense so skewed to the run - I think the players will be mentally done.

Many people are talking about injuries. It doesn't matter. We have had five seasons in a row of losing. Injuries? Well, if your team is deep enough, you can still get by. I just don't think the recruiting has been such that we have that kind of depth.

If Army beats us, it means we can't defend the run. And, as much as I loved Deloach's defense in the early oughts, it will be hard to defend any coach on the staff, from the top on down, if this thing goes badly tomorrow.

At the beginning of the week, I still had some confidence that this thing could take off. After seeing very strong performances by upcoming opponents, even in losses, I'm now not sure we can so much as break even in the Sun Belt - even if we were at full strength.

I hope I'm wrong, but I'm teetering again towards reality. Reality is as I said it was last year: Our football program doesn't exist in a vacuum. Everyone else has been practicing and getting better as well. All things being the same, we still are what we are, and Troy/MTSU/FAU, etc. still are what they are. And, that's not good for us.

I'm glad the game is early, so we'll have a clear picture by the afternoon of whether this team has any fight left in it for the long haul. If not, four years of this regime and six years of losing is enough. RV should then do the right thing at that point and start calling real pros at the college football game.

I expect a UNT win this weekend. I think the make-or-break game is next weekend at FAU. If we can get back to 2-2, then we may be able to salvage the year. If we're 0-4, then yes, the team's confidence is probably shot and we'll only see 2-3 wins in SBC play followed by a blowout against KSt.

  13. I hate the Wave, but I don't know if I hate it as much as this guy... maybe I do.

There's nothing that says... "Hey players we are supposed to be supporting, we're bored and dont give a crap about what you're doing. We need to create our own entertainment"... better than "The Wave". Total idiocracy.

I just wish the cheerleaders and whoever those dudes are in the wranglers & white shirts would recognize 3rd & 4th down for OUR team is a time to be quiet, and 3rd & 4th down for the opposition is time to get rowdy. PLEASE!

  14. Put it this way...i grew up in New Hampshire and my Dad in Boston...he raised me as a DIE HARD Red Sox Fan... to this day i am still a die hard Red Sox fan but have now lived in Texas for 5 years and really enjoy the Rangers. I'm still a Sox fan first and even though i do go to ranger games from time to time with Texas gear on...if they ever played Boston i would have my Sox hat on and be booing the rangers...but it doesn't mean i cant be a fan of the Hometown team. The rangers needed the fans and so does North Texas.

    Thank you for your courage.

Now, please accept this -1 from a Rangers fan due to your admission of openly rooting against the Rangers. It's like spanking your child. It hurts the parent more than the child. I still love you though.

  15. Well then, don't make your first 14 posts about firing the head coach and nothing else.

Correct. Thanks Rudy for spelling this out after the hints did not work. :)

In other news, Barry Switzer is still available for coaching! He has National Championships & a SuperBowl Ring!!

  16. I like our offense against this defense. If our defense continues to play the way they have been, then I think we'll win. If our special teams can limit mistakes to 1 or less, then I think we could win going away.

Of course, we can't count on any of those things, so I'm going to keep it close.

    Mean Green - 31

    Army - 27

    GO MEAN GREEN!
