  1. A quick search pulls ACLJ as the "American Center for Law & Justice". They are a religious rights watchdog.

What's the harm with having this as a law? $0 tax dollars are spent on it. It's not a law that is enforced in any kind of way... If you don't believe in God, then don't pray. How is it different than any other normal day?

And for those that do believe, they're praying for the strength of the country in which you live in. What's wrong with that?

Also, I don't believe it specifies any certain religion, so there's no favoritism. If it were the "National Christian Prayer Day", or the "National Buddhist Meditation Day", then I could understand.

Sadly, thousands, if not millions of dollars were spent on this useless ruling that could have been redirected elsewhere. If the "National Day of Prayer" (the Government version) gets struck down and removed, then the religious organizations of the US will probably continue it as a grassroots movement, and nothing will have changed.

I think there are plenty of other issues that the courts could be tackling instead of this.

  2. The Coaches page for football on meangreensports.com lists 11 coaches including the strength coach and Director of Operations. I made a spreadsheet with $600k for HC, $200k for coordinators, and $125k for all other assistants. It comes to a total of $2,125,000. To put that into persective, according to USA Today (see link at bottom) in 2008-2009, the latest data available, UNT paid ALL their coaches a total of $3,255,410.

I would hope that we would be able to at least have a pay scale as I've listed. However, I also realize that there are other costs involved (retirement, healthcare, etc) that may or may not have to come out of the athletic budget. Also, any payments made to Dodge probably will come out of this budget. But if you look at only salary for current coaches we would need about $2.1 million to have this type of pay scale.

    1 Head Coach: $600,000

    2 Offensive Coordinator: $200,000

    3 Offensive Line: $125,000

    4 Running Backs: $125,000

    5 Wide Receivers: $125,000

    6 Defensive Coordinator: $200,000

    7 Defensive Line: $125,000

    8 Defensive Ends: $125,000

    9 Cornerbacks: $125,000

    10 Safeties: $125,000

    11 Director of Operations: $125,000

    12 Director of St & Cond.: $125,000

    Grand Total: $2,125,000

    HC Total: $600,000

    Off Total: $575,000

    Def Total: $700,000

I hope we don't skip on a Special Teams coach again...

  3. I would rather take UTSA over Tx State from marketing and sports power ratings.

Taking a quick look at the Southland "Commissioners Cup" standings over the last few years, it appears that UTSA is a better overall program. However, these numbers appear to be skewed by their track & CC teams (as well as Men's Tennis). They don't have football, and TXSt has a very good football program (for the Southland).

I think I would rather see TXSt. join the belt over UTSA.

  4. "Alonzo Edwards looks like the real deal to me. He can play in the paint and facing the basket."

This is critical because we will be asking alot of Alonzo to replace some of Tramiel's production.

"Holmen appears to have extended his shooting range."

Same as above. This is good news. I'm hoping for a breakout year from Jacob this season.

"Dominique Johnson is back to being who he was last year before breaking his leg."

To be expected. It will be nice to get Dom back in the lineup. Hopefully he's not too rusty.

  5. I'm convinced many on this board would find something wrong with Bear Bryant, Vince Lombardi and Tom Landry, even if they had applied for the UNT HC position while they were in their coaching prime.

It would cost too much to exhume these guys, let alone hire two guys to walk them around like Weekend at Bernies.

And do you know how rude these guys were to their players? Have you seen Junction Boys?

JUST SAY NO TO BRYANT, LOMBARDI, & LANDRY!

  6. If Bower is hired and at the announcement RV says, 'I did contact Coach Fran. Mike Leach, Jim Leavitt, the Bowden Brothers, and all those high profile names mentioned on gmg.com and none of them were interested' would everyone still be frustrated with Bower? Of course if you start throwing out a bunch of 'sexy' names Jeff Bower becomes very boring. But if, as I suspect, none of them are intersted, I'd love to have Jeff Bower.

    No.

Of course, I doubt he would come out and say that. I think it would be up to Vito and Phillips and the media world to find out if they were in fact contacted.

If they were NOT contacted, then my answer would change to Yes.

I would love to see Coach "C" play both QBS Baine and Dodge....keep WKU guessing...Baine in the "wildcat" and running the option. RDodge to throw. We will need them both the rest of year since the line is giving all the have to pick up the Blitz on everyplay.

Baine is in to run...wait no he just threw it down the field !!

RDodge is in to pass.... wait no he just ran for 30 yards!!!

Let the fun begin for the next 5 games.

I admire Baine for being a trooper and stepping in to play, but I hope for the team's sake (and our sake) that he does not see the field anymore this season at QB.

Why on earth would you want to put Baine in as a wildcat QB over Dunbar, or even Riley??

  8. Good stuff,

I haven't gone on record as saying Bower would be a terrible hire or anything... He's just not a "sexy" pick like a Leach, Fran, Leavitt, etc... would be.

Is he going to excite the fanbase (or stir up new fans) as much as the other guys? No. Not even close.

Is he going to attract top-level talent here based on what recruits know about him at S.Miss? Probably not.

    Good, safe hire? Sure.

Would I revolt and throw a fit if he is the hire? No. He's just not at the top of my list.

  9. Once again , why is everyone promoting coaches that are out of work ? It appears that no one thinks UNT can hire anyone that still has a job. I don't believe that, UNT has a lot to offer and would be a great opportunity for many coaches. I think we should pursue coaches that are sucessful in their present position.

Throw out a name/names. We'll banter about him/them. Heck, Bellotti has a thread with 6 replies.

I think the simple fact is, the successful coaches who are out of work are the ones who would consider us and may be more affordable. Usually hiring a coach away from a successful program includes buyout clauses and such, and unless we hear a leak from a reputable source that we are going to be offering upwards of $1mil, then I doubt we're luring away any successful coaches right now (unless you're looking FCS or below).

  10. I also like the way president Rawlins is an athletics advocate/cheerleader, and I know that most of us on here love our Mean Green, but for me, I want the new president to be focused on getting UNT to Tier 1 status first and foremost. If that person is Pres. Rawlins, and he wants to stick around, then by all means, sign him up! If not, then we need to hire the most qualified person to get us to Tier 1. Hopefully that person is well-rounded enough to understand the role of athletics in building a University. We certainly know Rawlins is, with his "3 A's" approach (Academics, Arts, Athletics).

  11. So, I repeat:

You are OK with sending 18-23 year olds onto a field to perform physical violence for your pleasure at a risk (a great risk if you are a UNT starter in 2010) of disabling injury, but you are offended to high heaven by a coach slapping a player (causing no injury at all) to get his attention about a mistake in a violent game played for your entertainment?

    That is hypocrisy.

And it is the wussification of America. Otherwise, explain how anything other than that players feelings were hurt.

Sir, you are now so entrenched, it's silly and worthless for anyone to even argue anymore.

It's not a matter of "wussification", it's principle. If you cannot see that, then so be it. I'll hang up and listen...

  12. Please...we don't need our legitimate football conversation cluttered up talks of shades and color schemes of uniforms, flare on helmets and aesthetic decorating ideas for our new house...

Oh. Crap...maybe we are all women.

Which host of The View would you most like to see interview the new stadium? I just have to go with Barbara Walters. She's so funny, yet so sophisticated.

  13. Ok, so then should the coaches be allowed to demonstrate proper tackling technique? That would be against the "keep their hands to themselves" rule, right?

Slapping a player on the back is now prohibited?

Butt slapping has GOT to be prohibited, being that it is not only physical abuse, but sexual abuse as well?

Demonstrating proper blocking technique, where a coach hits a defense player and knocks him to the ground is now abuse?

Seriously, have people on here never played football?

All of this in a game where the object is to hit the other guy as hard as you can and physically force him to the ground.

    So much hypocrisy.

90, I agree with alot of the things you say, but your citations are straw-man, at best, on this issue. It's black & white sir. A player felt threatened enough to bring this to light. What player would feel threatened when a coach is showing them a blocking technique??

USF did an investigation. They found he was wrong (maybe it was rigged as MizzouTigers says, and maybe it wasnt). It doesn't mean that I wouldn't want him here, but there's not an excuse for what he did. Hopefully, he can move on and learn from his mistake (I hope it's singular), and would be excited if he were to move on here at UNT.

  14. This is great news! After we lost out on Jones, I was a little worried that we wouldn't pull down a HS big this year.

I'm looking for big things from the new twin towers Holmen/Robinson in the future.

I'm in total agreement with Tasty as far as needing possibly 1 more big of the JUCO variety and 2 scorers (one of the 3 variety and another of a 2 variety) depending on what Knoxy does. If he can contribute ANYTHING, then get another scoring winger.

    B. Dillard should be our #1 target now right?

Even if we don't get another big in this class, I'm happy with what we have now (although Jordan's teammate Jarion is still out there).

Gotta be VERY happy with the PG situation. We will have 3 guys who can handle the ball really well in 2011-12 and beyond.
