  1. Good point. I did mention that the administrators need to be on point, too. I think that's what you are talking about here.

But, oeverall, you don't get the same kind of vibe for UNT driving into Denton the way you do when you go onto other campuses. We all do because we graduated from here.

There is a hill to climb here that is completely different than Boise State - both inside the school and outside. Since we can't be in an incubator, the way Boise could be for decades, we have to work harder.

Many people here talk about Dodge's dedication, but I mean, really? He never lived here. He always went home to Southlake where he still walks on water. He was, maybe, kind of insulated from the community in that way. Not that he didn't get out, just...he never became part of it.

The new guy has to be here and on it 365 days a year. There's too much other competition in the Metroplex to believe otherwise.

I had about a 5 minute conversation with coach Dodge and Riley while we were shopping for groceries at the Target in Denton. Though he didn't LIVE in Denton, he was around.

  2. I don't believe that that is how it works.

You hire the hungry up-and-comer who works his a$$ of to build the program up, which causes people to give more money etc. He then gets hired away from us, and we either hire the next "hungry up-and-comer" or a proven coach that was fired because he wasn't a good fit at his previous job, but for whatever reason, he's a better fit for North Texas. AND because of the hard work and success of the previous coach, we have enough money to hire the aforementioned "proven coach".

We were in the position to hire Hayden Fry because he was unjustly fired, he was a proven program builder (SMU) and he was hungry to prove that SMU were idiots for firing him. We were also in the position to hire him because we had a President (Jitter Nolan) who understood what it took to get a program going and got creative in paying Hayden (they paid him two salaries...HC and AD).

I don't think that situation will ever happen again, but there will always be young hungry coaches out there willing to work their a$$e$ off to get to the next level.

I don't think that DD was a very hungry coach.

I think it's clear who you want as the next head coach. A guy who is very hungry: Mark Mangino. Thanks for your input Silver! :D

  3. Yeah, I don't want that kind of character here. It's like the college coaching equivalent of quitting a job by no-show. Then he goes to sell info to boosters, then he bails out on a 7-5 season when that team would've done better the following season.

The guy burns bridges WHILE he's on them. Not a quality we need here.

He was definitely pushed out after that 7-5 season. I think that's rather obvious. If he quit, he would not be getting a paycheck from A&M right now.

  4. Even RV said don't expect 9-3 next year. It will be September 2011 before the new guy can win any games for NT. Before then we need ticket sales and club seats to be sold, a known coach can do that before winning a single game.

I agree with 93-98 here. We've already made a "splash", "known coach" hire. His name is Todd Dodge.

The new stadium is going to sell itself out in the first year. I'm more concerned with finding someone who can win games. That way, those sell outs are sustained and don't drop off after the excitement of the new stadium wears off.

  5. I wouldn't think he'd be anywhere near Leach on most hiring AD's preference lists. Leach had success year after year, Croom had one successful year as HC. What's he doing now, anyway?

He's a RB coach for the St. Louis Rams. Sure he didn't win a bunch of games, but if you think UNT is a coaching wasteland, try Mississippi State. The fact that he could put together that great 2007 season against SEC competition with their resources says something.

  6. Really?

I want a coach that Wins!

    I want a packed stadium.

I want to sit in a traffic jam on I-35.

    I want students purchasing tickets.

I want ticket prices to go up.

I want to pay a coach millions.

I want to talk about stadium expansion on 10 years.

I want to talk about players leaving UNT early for the draft.

    No more High School Coaches!

    No more experiments!

No 60+ year old that wants to give it one last try!

    We don't need a coach that's a buddy!

We don't need a coach that's socially acceptable or media friendly!

We don't need a coach that's "looking" for a job!

We all want this. Baby steps sir.

  7. During the press conference, RV said he expects the new coach to be out in the community "every day" for the first several weeks or more. Leach refused to do that at Tech.

And does anyone here have actual knowledge that RV has NOT contacted Leach's agent already to gauge interest? There are lots and lots of messages that take place far out of the public eye when hiring.

This also sounds like it would preclude Bower since he seems to be entrenched in Miss.

  8. I'm surprised Fran is leading this poll and there is little justification of why in the thread itself... so I'll give my vote a little defense:

Fran has coached teams at all levels of play - from sub D-I through AQ BCS schools. All have winning records and very little off-field flack

(I think the last thing I want is to be successful, yet be known as "The U. part 2").

The guy is a great recruiter, plain and simple.

He has enough pull, that he could bring in an amazing staff to coach under him (if the funding is there), including his son Brad who is the Head Coach at 2 time NJCAA National Champion Blinn College.

He leaves programs in better shape than when he found them. If he has to leave, then that will certainly mean that UNT will be an attractive place for the next coach.

Those of you who don't like him based off of his Alabama departure (which I would agree was very dishonest and crappy), I don't know that I would not have done the same. Texas A&M is a great place to coach and Alabama was going to be saddled with heavy sanctions.

As for his A&M departure due to his "newsletter", I think that maybe some of us on here would subscribe to this! Don't throw rocks in the glass house!

    Go get him Rick!

  9. All this talk about him going back to high school is ridiculous. You've got guys out there who climbed the ladder from high school to college - Art Briles, Gus Malzahn, Todd Graham, Chad Morris....

Dodge, if he choses to do so, will be on a college coaching staff next season; and, probably a BCS staff. I guarantee you he'll have calls today.

It's not that Dodge wasn't smart or didn't have something. His problem was he brought along too many other people who didn't have as much in their tank as him. Then, he was too loyal to the for too long.

Is that a bad thing? In life generally - no. But, college football is different. If you have a group of guys who collectively don't know what they are doing, they are going to be exploited.

Dodge's coaching staffs were exploited by the like of Bob Stoops, Les Miles, Howard Schnellenberger, Larry Blakeney, David Bailiff, Rick Stockstill, Ricky Bustle...and on and on and on. Coaches with decades of college experience standing across the sideline from him, Ford, and the cuss-patrolling wide receivers coach.

You think back to game one in Oklahoma. Todd Ford calling the shots against Bob Stoops and Brent Venables? Come on. Ron Mendoza trying to scheme against Kevin Wilson and Kevin Sumlin...and with a secondary coach who had been out of the profession for 13 years? It was a joke.

The learning curve was steep for Dodge. But, he's not done by a long shot. He can be a position coach, a pass game coordinator, an offensive coordinator, a quarterbacks coach. Heck, John L. Smith is the outside linebacker/special teams coach at Arkansas, for crying out loud!

He's got something. He made some mistakes here. But, he isn't done by a long shot. As alumni and a fan base, it wasn't fun to be part of the "experiment." But, we've got a new stadium on the way, and the hope of RV getting us a coach with experience in building mid-majors like ours.

In the end, Dodge will be fine, we'll be fine. In fact, we're both better off. Dodge can relax and choose among offers. We can began to have hope for the future in our new stadium.

I think this is spot on. He'll more than likely be a D-I QB coach or D-Ia/D-II O-coordinator next year.

  10. Given that Leach is engaged in a lawsuit with a state entity and we are a state entity, I have doubts that we could hire Leach.

I don't think this is getting through people's skulls... similar to the "30 days" rumor that has been debunked about 100 times on here, yet it keeps coming up.

Forget about Leach while he is engaged in his lawsuit folks. If it ends tomorrow, then great, let's talk to him! But I don't want to wait around for him.

  11. Starts in just over 2 hours.

    YANKEEDOUCHE.gif

I loved this douche-baggery. You know, I guess I've never really paid much attention to yankee games at Yankee Stadium, but I always thought that the fans at the ballpark in Arlington that boo when the opposing pitcher checks a runner at first base with a slow throw were just dumb Dallas fans that didn't follow the game. Then I heard even more boos from the yankee faithful. Then, there was the robbery of THEIR OWN PLAYER off the first base side later in the game. I don't doubt that they are educated in winning baseball, but wow they are stupid fans.

  12. Sucks that Dodge ball didnt work, but high school football is not the same as college football. Good luck to you coach dodge, you will dominate the high school ranks again im sure. I respect you for how much class you showed during your tenure here. Best of luck in your future endeavors.

He's done with High School football. I echo the sentiments of most on this board...Best of luck to coach Dodge. Thanks for trying and I hope you can take what you've learned here at UNT and use it in your future endeavors. This was the best move for both parties I think.

Now Canales is the man, so most of you clammoring to see this will get your wish. I don't want to hear any of the injury excuses for coach Canales that were rebuffed for Dodge. Coach Canales, make lemonade. If not, you're out of here too.
