Mac was sold to this fan base as a guy who can take a moribund program and turn it into a winner due to his "success" at Iowa St and subsequent success with the Florida program. We both agree that he was not a winner, but that doesn't change the fact that he was presented to this fan base as a winner. As a matter of fact, I heard somewhere that he won a National Championship at Florida. I think he even has a ring. lol

Nope, don't think I'm ignoring it since I addressed it in my response. The university sold him as a "winner" who can turn a program around because of the winning seasons he had at Iowa St. You read it here, but it's from 2010. I thought the same thing until Harry pointed out he's 32.

Isn't that who we hired last time? I would disagree about the "winner face on the program," but the powers that be thought Mac had that quality.

I'm "arguing" because you keep referencing my quotes acting like I think Canales is football Jesus. If you're just now getting that I don't think Canales should be the next head coach then it's obvious you haven't been reading the posts of mine that you've quoted. You don't like him. I get it. We just disagree because I think he should be given his due for improving our team this year. Are we a good team? Of course not, but I don't think we're the worst FBS in the country anymore and four weeks ago I don't think that was even up for debate.

Yes, because Chico is solely responsible for every offensive recruit that has been brought in the past six years. If that's the case, you should be the one praising him based on the teams performance the past few weeks. You quote me, but your reply has little to do with anything I wrote. Great point. There's not a coach in America that would be better than 1-2 with that schedule. I'm not saying that means Canales is among the best coaches in America. I'm not saying we should hire him because he beat a 1-6 UTKFC. I'm simply saying the schedule to this point hasn't been kind and the best we could hope for is a 1-2 record regardless of who was coaching. That being said, I think there are plenty of coaches who'd have gone 0-3. I fully expect that he'll be 1-4 after two weeks and that will have very little to do with coaching and more to do with getting beaten by two far superior teams. There are many good teams in college football who would go 0-4 in that stretch of games (on the road at WKU, Marshall, LaTech, UT). We all knew before the season that the schedule was doing us no favors.

He was first name that came to mind when I heard Mac had been fired, but I'm not so sure now. He has a lot of positives, but the huge negative to me is lack of head coaching experience. That makes it a very risky hire, but the reward could also be great.

It agree that it shouldn't be our standard in the future, but this year I think keeping it competitive (lose by 10 or less) when we are a 30 point underdog would be a fairly high expectation. Also, I have yet to see anyone say that they think we'll beat MTSU, so I think that would be pretty good. Obviously we're not beating Tennessee, so make a good showing there. I just think for a team that started off 0-6 and got beat by at least 14 in all six of those losses, my scenario would be over-achieving for this team..

We can hope it's only 30 for Tennessee. haha

Odd that it was a somewhat delayed knee jerk reaction. When I posted it on Saturday night I don't think anyone had mentioned offering him the job, but you are correct, there are numerous examples of it now. I like Canales and truly appreciate what he has done as interim coach (twice), but the timing just isn't right for him to be our next head coach. Now, make it competitive against LaTech, don't get embarrassed at UT, and beat MTSU and UTEP and I might change my mind.

I would have guessed between 8-10K. Ghost town is little dramatic. I'd say alumni side was about 1/3 full, which is bad, but hardly a "ghost town." Now if you were describing the wing you'd get no disagreement from me.

We could have had those two plays a month ago and we still would have lost (probably by 20+). We're a better team now than were a month ago. That's all I'm sayin.

This. Show a little optimism and you're branded an idiot who thinks we could come back and win C-USA this year with Canales as national coach of the year. All most of us are saying is that we are vastly improved over the team we ran out there less than a month ago. That 4th team QB leading a 1-6 opponent beats us by 20+ points a month ago.

Like pretty much everyone who has posted in this thread, I acknowledge his deficiencies, but the more he plays the madder I get that he was on the sidelines for the first 5 games.

While I agree with everything you say about the PSU game, I'm still not sure we beat them. Maybe I'm just over rating them because they beat what is turning out to be a pretty good Washington St. team.

what would our record be? I think the team (and coaching staff) that has been on the field the past three weeks beats SMU and maybe even Rice. Southern Miss and Portland St. are still loses, but not nearly as lopsided. Iowa probably calls the score regardless because they're proving to be pretty good this year. Who knows, if Smith had been QB all year he might, just might be a little more accurate with his passes and that would make a big difference. So I say we would be 3-5, with losses to teams that are 8-0, 6-3, 7-1(FCS), 7-2, 8-1.

Had he been hired after Dodge I would have been 100% behind the move, but I just think at this point he represents too much of the past from which we are trying to distance ourselves. You think he would have been a bad hire, but since it never happened you can't know for a fact. Just the same as I can't know for a fact that he would have been a good hire, thus my use of the words may have been.

Who has called for Chico to be head coach? I missed that thread. All I see are people showing appreciation for an improved team the last three games and the avoidance of a certain 0-12 season if the other guy was still head coach. I'll state one more time: He may have been the best option at head coach after Dodge. It would be ridiculous to hire him now, but I don't know that it would have been five years ago and neither do you.

I know, the way he finished the season with Dodge's mess and the way he has turned things around this year...what was I thinking? Not saying he should be hired now, but 5 years ago, the time may have been right.
