  1. I couldn't agree more on those comments. We do need a newer, bigger COBA building. With roughly 8,000 students, we're the 2nd largest college on campus. I too saw the light on the fact that Pohl is wanting to move away [some] from being known as a liberal arts school. We can get more money as a research school then we ever could as a liberal arts one.
  2. Hmmmm, interesting what Pohl wants to do. Makes a lot of sense though. ------------------------------------- Ashley Womble -- NT Daily President wants NT to be recognized for engineering and science programs If Dr. Norval Pohl has his way, people won't think of NT as simply a liberal arts and humanities school for much longer. Pohl is mounting a public relations campaign focusing on programs such as engineering and science, saying the public's image of NT as an arts and music school is incomplete. "The goal isn't to shift NT's focus, but to shift people's perception about what NT is about," Pohl said. Pohl's campaign to turn attention toward engineering and science programs could mean more funding for NT. "Since most universities are evaluated on the amount of research dollars brought to the university, I think that it is important that we are strong in engineering and science since they are bringing in the dollars," Dr. John Gossett of the communication studies faculty said. Gossett warned that NT must stay balanced and must not forget its roots in the humanities and arts. "So long as science and technology don't become the sole focus, I think it is possible to become balanced as long as the university knows that there are several nationally recognized programs," he said. Dr. Jean Keller, dean of the College of Education, said the emphasis on engineering and science will give students more options. "As the university grows and becomes larger, if we have more programs, that is a good thing for students," she said. Keller said that the challenge is how to appropriately fund the College of Engineering and still keep the strong programs that NT is known for. "I think that NT is a comprehensive institution, and if the music and arts colleges maintain their excellence in their graduates and alumni, they will still bring recognition to the institution and themselves," she said. While the transition will affect colleges and departments differently, Dr. Warren Burggren, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, said he expects the emphasis on engineering and sciences to be a positive thing for the college. "Since we have a half dozen science and math departments, and since science, math and engineering are all intricately linked, I think this new appreciation of the need to promote sciences, generally defined, bodes very well for improvement of this particular part of our college," Burggren said. Dr. Jack Davis, dean of the School of Visual Arts, said he hopes that [the administration] wants achieve the same excellence in science and engineering that has already achieved in arts and humanities. "Expansion is always to preserve the strengths we have and build on that," he said. Pohl said he is doing more than trying to shift the public's perception to engineering and science. NT is asking for $12 million from the state Legislature over the next six years to build a College of Engineering and purchased Research Park, the facility that will house the college, in November 2002 for $8.9 million. Meanwhile, other buildings that have been requested by NT are being delayed. Davis said that people in the School of Visual Arts was disappointed that it did not get a new building, but they understand the need for Research Park. "I think we are still on the agenda to expand, it just got delayed. An opportunity came and it would have been short-sighted if [NT] hadn't taken advantage of the opportunity," Davis said. Pohl said that if NT does not get money for the College of Engineering from the Legislature, the university will get the money elsewhere. "The plan is not to reallocate existing dollars away from other programs, " Pohl said. Pohl said that money for the College of Engineering will come out of growth, out of special funding or from donors. Gossett said that when one department gets one new building, it frees up space for other departments. "A rising tide raises all ships, if there are more dollars at the university there will be more money to go around," Gossett said.
  3. Someone hacked a server and got EUID info, so they reset a bunch of passwords. Go to Manage from the EagleMail page and choose the Get new password from there. I called the help desk this afternoon and found out after my mail hadn't worked all day.
  4. This should be required listening for all new students.
  5. For those who don't know, there was a petition filed regarding the reappointment of 5 or 6 senators to SGA. The hearing was last night and 4 out of 4 judges voting were in favor of SGA. SFA'ers are all mad because they didn't get their way, despite working "within the system." In fact, they feel the system is inadequate and cannot be changed without an outside force. IMHO, it looks like SFASGA is starting to crumble, especially since several of it higher ups are quitting or are extremely frustrated. I just wish that they should realize that it is the job of a highest court, in this case the SGA Supreme Court, to rule based on the constitution, which they did. Ethics and morals shouldn't be the basis of their ruling, cause those are subjective in nature, no matter how right or wrong the situation may be. NT Daily article My biggest concern now is that there will be a movement to disband SGA, thus removing the students voice within university affairs.
  6. Way to go Lady Eagles! Glory to the Green!
  7. That's close to 4% increase in enrollment. Additional funds would be nice to build something like 3 - 5 Maple Hall like residence halls
  8. who was the coach (UNO perhaps) that had the coach that was very expressive? He did this funny little dance [when he got mad about a call or something his player did] that got everyone in the Pit laughing and making fun of him.
  9. 13% for in state students. 26% for in state freshmen. I think the figured that was rattled off on the news story was around $2,600 for 16 hours. Wow!
  10. Um, RHA (Residence Hall Association) was selling them last spring as a fund raiser. We're hoping they'll be a hot item. If they are, more 'buildings' will be made and sold. The first one was of the Admin building. To contact someone in housing, call (940) 565-2610. It's the best place to start, since I don't know who you could contact right now.
  11. I think both those apartment complexes are on their way out. One of them has been totally shut down, and the other doesn't look like there are all that many people living there. I think in the very near future, those 2 buildings will be coming down. Question is, what will be done with all that real estate that has been cleared? Personally, I'd love to have a 'grassy knoll' across from Clark. Second, A new Stadium where Fouts is. Third, some more freakin residence halls. These are the people that make things happen at UNT. More people on campus would translate into more participation. Fourth, a newer and bigger Business building. Cury Hall is nice, but I hardly have had any classes in the COBA building. I even get to step foot into Matthews the semester, since one of my BCIS classes is in there.
  12. I just want the home games to be absolutely crazy. We could easily have the pit at 4-5k, especially on weekends. Hopefully, my wishful thinking will become a reality. That finally home game was a blast, and the players just feed off our energy. Personally, I'm ever so thankful that RV is putting students on the floor, where we can provide more support for the team. We can also make a lot of noise when the other team is making FTs. I'm really looking forward to the upcoming basketball season.
  13. I pick up student tickets any while purchasing tickets for my parents and any other [none student] peeps that decide to hang with us. I know my bro's g/f's family is planning on coming to at least one game this season, along with another family friend's family. I'm doing my part to help bring people into the stadium, and I know others are too, it's the people that have never stepped foot in Fouts that we need to work on.
  14. Perhaps, but they built a chapel right in the middle of Crumley Park. Everyone complains about the lack of students on campus and how we are labeled as a commuter school. Problem is, there isn't much to do [on campus] right now. Providing space for leisure activities is a step in the right direction. If they do put in buildings there, I hope they don't tear down any of those oak trees. Plus, from the sounds of the plan, they might take out the commuter lot in front of Clark, which would make parking in that corner of the school (what is already) a nightmare for residents of Mozart/Clark/Maple/Crumley/commuter students on top of any event held at the SuperPit/Fouts/Murchinson PAC.
  15. Perhaps, by using the term commons, they'll be turning it into a park! YEAH! It's already got plenty of trees, just get the grass to grow, install a sprinkler system, and it's ready to use. Putting in some picnic tables and a swing set would be awesome. Nothing against the SigEps, but I'm glad to see that place go down. Now to get rid of the 2 [other] roach motels between Clark and the SuperPit.
  16. I think those two are observed is because it's still early in the semester. You start getting farther into the semester, and it becomes more difficult to make up material. Good Friday is a half day, but there aren't a lot of Friday afternoon classes.
  17. Personally, I hated the spring months in grade school. It was riddled with 4 day weeks on top of spring break. It actually drew out the spring semester by something like 2 weeks. Teacher inservice days were a forced holiday since the teachers couldn't work a little extra at home or at school after the school day was over to finish grades for a grading period. Now in college, I'm glad we don't break for every single holiday. It's tough enough having a Monday off (Labor day) this fall, because it puts you behind all your other classes, especially in my case where all my classes meet once a week.
  18. Like my brother's g/f. She's known since she was 5 she wanted to be a doctor And to make it more interesting, she wants to be a neurologist. She thinks that when she finishes her 2 years of residency, she'll be a neurologist. I've tried to explain to her that after the becomes a plain-jane MD, she will have another 3-4 years training for her discipline. After that she'll join a group, and be a "lower-level" Dr. in the group. She is taking organic chemistry this fall, so we'll see how her dream does fares after that weed-out class. My mom, who graduated as a Med Tech from UNL said she hated that class, and it was harder then anything she's ever fathomed.
  19. I wonder what this season's schedule holds for us.... Beating SMU and playing TTech close would make for some improvements over last year. Of course, we'd have to win over TCU again to prove to them that last wasn't a fluke.
  20. let's see if mine works...... and don't gripe about the colors either, I put my say in it, and I wanted less red and more of other colors. <_< At least when we take this flag, we'll be flying the UNT (not the Texas flag) right above it.
