  1. My question is, why not add on to The University of North Texas System? In all honesty, I'm not surprised in UTAs move. They're not happy, and the Chencellor has recently put more emphasis on UTD, which is a younger and smaller campus. ----------- Lawmaker proposes taking the UT out of UTA By John Moritz Star-Telegram Austin bureau AUSTIN -- The University of Texas at Arlington would end its 38-year membership in the University of Texas System and would become an independent entity under legislation filed Wednesday by an Arlington lawmaker. State Rep. Toby Goodman, R-Arlington, said he and several other Tarrant-area lawmakers are dissatisfied with the UT system's plan to promote the University of Texas at Dallas to "flagship" status, which they say would siphon money and prestige from the 108-year-old Arlington campus. "Certainly, I want the UT system to be aware that we are proud of our university," said Goodman, who has 11 Tarrant-area co-sponsors for his bill. "It's the fastest-growing university in the system. We have done very, very well with our university....To say that we are second tier offends us." UT system Chancellor Mark Yudof has set UT-Dallas on a track to become a nationally ranked research campus. But in meetings two weeks ago with community leaders, the chancellor sought to give assurances that he had no plans to relegate UTA to the back burner. "We're not dismantling Arlington," Yudof told Arlington leaders on Feb. 28. "That's just flat-out untrue. The long-term projection is Arlington would be a major research university, there's no doubt about that." Yudof said in the next 10 years he expects UTA to be doing more than $100 million worth of research. He also noted that the UT system regents recently approved a new $39.9 million chemistry and physics building for the Arlington campus. But Goodman, along with state Sens. Chris Harris, R-Arlington, and Kim Brimer, R-Fort Worth, contend that UTA, which has an enrollment of almost 24,000 students, is already well on its way to becoming a top research center. They called the university's Nanotechnology Research and Training Facility the crown jewel of the campus' scientific research. "UTA is years and years ahead of their research capacity at UT-Dallas," Goodman said. During a meeting of the UTA faculty senate on Wednesday, several professors expressed the hope that the lawmakers' displeasure with the system can be assuaged. "It's incredibly encouraging that the community has realized that we're here and we're an asset,"said Dan Formanowciz, a biology professor. "If it's being done to get the attention of people down there that's terrific." English professor Emory Estes Jr. said he would not want to see UTA join the Texas A&M System because A&M was not hospitable to UTA when it was part of that system from 1917 to 1965. "They didn't care about us," he said. In executive session, Faculty Senate Chairman Thomas Chrzanowski said he will email senators about a possible special meeting to consider a resolution on the system issue, according to Formanowciz. Under House Bill 2393 by Goodman, and under a Senate version that Brimer said he plans to introduce Thursday or Friday, UTA would be severed from the UT system and would operate under its own board of regents. However, the UT system would remain responsible for paying off all debt the Arlington campus has incurred during its time with the UT system. Both Goodman and Brimer said they would consider amending their bills to allow one of the other state university systems to annex UTA. Several Tarrant lawmakers have met with representatives of the A&M system, the Texas Tech University System and the University of Houston System. UTA's President Robert Witt left on March 1 to become president of the University of Alabama. Charles Sorber, UT vice chancellor for special engineering programs, will be interim president until a new president is named. Teresa Sullivan, the UT system executive vice chancellor of academic affairs and chair of the search committee for a new president of UTA, said switching systems would complicate the search. "It makes it really hard for a candidate to agree to be considered under those circumstances," Sullivan said. "I personally hope it won't happen." Goodman acknowledged that the UT system has powerful allies around the state and that any effort to sever the Arlington campus would require an all-out battle. And he kept open the possibility that the UT system might keep the school when all is said and done. "We just want to be assured that if we stay in the system that our university is treated fairly," he said. "The game is afoot, as Sherlock Holmes would say," Staff writer Patrick McGee contributed to this report.
  2. For the most part, the music scene has left Denton. It did so several years ago. The moving of the "Fry Street Fair" looks like the final nail in the coffin. Maybe this will be a slap in the face for Denton when it comes to supporting different programs, but I doubt it for some reason. <_<
  3. The fact that it was a problem in New Orleans and seems to be the same way in Bowling Green, says to me that it's the fans of other teams can't (notice I didn't say WON'T) travel, for one reason or another, to the event. Some how, I think if the event were to be held at Denver or FIU it would still be a problem.
  4. Western Kentucky Ends Season For Lady Eagles 65-53 BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (3/8/03)-- Western Kentucky connected on nine 3-point shots to power their way past the North Texas women's basketball team in the quarterfinals of the Sun Belt Conference tournament 65-53 at E.A. Diddle Arena. Western Kentucky advances to the semifinals while the Lady Eagles end their season 12-16. The Lady Toppers built an 11-point lead to open the game at 21-10 with 11:50 in the first half. The Lady Eagles responded by holding Western Kentucky scoreless over the next seven minutes which ignited a 14-0 run and saw the Lady Eagles take 24-21 lead with 4:08 in the half. Vilma Grismanauskaite dominated the inside game and scored 13 first half points on her way to a career-high 24 for the game as North Texas extended their lead to 32-27 at the half. The Lady Toppers opened the second half with a 12-4 run to retake the lead at 39-36 behind the shooting of Leslie Logsdon and Kristina Covington. The Lady Eagles got to within one-point at 45-44 with 9:30 left in the game, but the Lady Toppers responded with an 11-2 run to pull away from North Texas for good. Freshman Jamie Armstrong scored 12 points and Emily Britt came off the bench to add 10 points. Covington and Logsdon combined for the nine 3-point baskets by the Lady Toppers and both ended the game in double figures.
  5. I just wish I could say with confidence that I think we will mach up well against the Lady Toppers. The Lady Eagles have had such an up and down season. Hopefully the last 2 wins have given them some confidence.
  6. Great to hear such enthusiasm about the recruiting class and competing in the SunBelt.
  7. I'm waiting for CMJ to post...I bet he'd say yes.
  8. I won. It wasn't pretty, 5-4, but all it takes is one point. Plus, I beat IronMan in hockey, so it's been a great week for me in fantasy sports. Well, I'm off to bed now.
  9. Do you mean board, like this message board, or bored, like I have nothing better to do...? Well, on to the original topic... I'd vote for Anna Kournikova. She's single, plus gets bonus points in my book for showing some midriff with her tennis outfit (with a short skirt as well). This is what you wanted us to talk about...right?
  10. Still, it'll be nice to hold a 2-1 record over your head.
  11. *bump* Still need more players. I'm ready to play...Speaking of beating people, Cara, if you're not careful, I'll be 2-1 in basketball if I pull out a win between today and tomorrow.
  12. here's a pic of the tattoo that tyson got (btw, it's not done yet)
  13. I just looks like the clan is broadening their horizons. Anymore, it's so uncool to be racist. Regardless of the outcome, the whole thing is incredibly...funny.
  14. Doesn't the Agusta group have tons of $$$? Also, in a sign of protest, didn't they paid for (in cash) the TV time (rather then have comercials) a year or so ago? If this is a private club, then there's nothing that really can be done, no matter how many people stomp their feet in protest.
  15. Currently yes, but there's no telling. The UNTHSC in FW is starting at 10AM tomorrow, we could ned up with the same thing. I think it all depends on how the weather is early in the morning. You gotta remember that the morning commute may be killer.
  16. Classes are canceled for Wednesday. UNT website This is perhaps the worst ice storm we've had in a decade for the DFW area.
  17. I think it will be safe to say that there will be NO AM classes. However, seeing how the roads were on TV at 5pm tonight, the Denton area has been hard hit. Even if there are afternoon classes, how many students would actually risk driving if they really have to. The key thing will be, will the temperature get above freezing?
  18. Zeke, I wish it was snow...instead...it's the characteristic sleet and freezing rain that falls in DFW.
  19. How's the weather where you are?
  20. The funniest thing tonight was the Kentucky fan throwing a fit every time the refs called something against Kentucky...I mean Southern Alablama. To add further comedy to the situation, he had the Kentucky...I mean Southern Alabama head coach sign a DUKE sign that had the 'D' and 'E' crossed out to spell UK. Maybe this was the guy that complained about North Texas on CFN. Still, the Mean Green played some good ball, but mistakes and the absence of Chris Davis really hurt us.
  21. That...um...is a lot of free throws. Hopefully we won't have that problem tonight.
  22. You shouldn't be worried about the cuts in classes and such this year, it's what's coming down the road that should scare A LOT of people. We're just seeing the top of the iceberg folks.
