  1. WR D'erren Wilson will be in attendance per Vito's recruiting series article on Wilson.
  2. So far we've extended very fews offers in July. The evaluating period isn't over (Tee Goree and O'Keeron Rutherford were among a few of our signees who were not offered yet at this point last year), but the coaches have identified their targets and likely are zoning in on a select number of guys. Wanted to start a thread on the Friday night lights camp (and any other camps that week of Friday July 25th) in order to see who is going to be there. That time last year we saw Fonzale Davis and Connor Means commit during the camp and Brandon Garner, Jalen Montgomery, Kishawn McClain, and Chris Miles commit shortly after in the next week or two. Hopefully we see the camp give our class a big boost like last year. Friday Night Light expected attendees: - WR D'erren Wilson - DE/DT Dustin Mcwhorter - OL Joseph Gonzales - ATH Davion Freeman - OL Abdul Beecham (committed 7/25/14) - JUCO WR Jarvis Baxter - LB Anthony Hines (2017) - OL Creighton Barr - OL Evan Curl - WR Jerminic Smith - DB Ashton Preston (commit) - DE Myles Cheatum
  3. Rivals also bumped Tee Goree from a 2-star to a 3-star after he committed to us. You can't look at things from only one angle and ignore when things to the contrary happen. Just like we can't only look at the successful 2-stars and unsuccessful 3-stars when we examine how effective star-ratings are.
  4. Disagree again. It is a factor, but you can see the player's capabilities even if they're doing it on a lower level. It makes things less impressive, but when you look at a kid's film you are zoning in on that one individual player and what his skill set is. Is he a one-step cut or two-step cut guy? Does he tackle high? How is his throwing motion? Is he nasty? A lot of major questions can be answered regardless of competition. I'll be honest, some kid's we have offered I have not been able to watch past the first minute or so in their highlight film. It doesn't matter who they are going against, they themselves aren't looking like division 1 players. I don't know who they're going against, I just know that they are looking very underwhelming. I definitely agree on the sample size. I love watching full game films if I can get my hands on them. That is a major flaw in highlight videos, but I'm only realistically looking for a player's skill set in their highlight video. Not their consistency. Another thing I like to do is watch other player's highlight videos that feature another player in question. For example, watching Evan Curl's highlights and seeing what kind of player Chris Miles is on those plays where they are Curl's highlights and maybe just a random play for Miles. Or watching Kenneth Mann during Joseph Gonzales' highlights. That's when I knew for sure that Mann was the real deal, before he picked up another 19 offers or so. But yes, recruiting battles are ultimately the measure that matters as far as coaches ability to recruit. Being able to get the guys you want, even if other schools want them, is how you get your program to it's full potential.
  5. Not to sound like a want-to-be evaluator, but you can tell a lot from highlights. If you just look at things as good play vs. bad play, then yeah, they aren't going to be that different. They're all good plays. You have to evaluate much deeper than that
  6. Every research that has ever been done on stars shows that a higher percentage of 5-stars make it to the NFL than 4-stars, a higher percentage of 4-stars make it to the NFL than 3-stars, and so on. It doesn't affect each individual player, but the numbers average out over time, over all the players. There are also many other factors. Coach Mccarney developed and evaluated a bunch of 2-star guys and kicked a team who had been pulling a very high amount of 3-stars and beat them 55-14. Also, stars focus on measuring a player's athletic ability. Not taking into account the mental aspect. And even then, it's impossible to always be right. All those factors make it ridiculous to reduce a recruit to his star-rating, especially if you're just using his star-rating from 1 of the 4 major recruiting websites. Stars don't matter individually, but they do average out over time over many players.
  7. I thought the same thing when I first saw he did one on Holmes.
  8. When our classes back then were 90% two-stars (70% at the lowest for Dunbar's year) you're going to have most of your best players be two-stars just by virtue of them out-numbering the three-stars. Look at our defense last year. We started 7 two-star, or lower, rated players. But our leader in sacks, leader in tackles, and leader in interceptions were all three-star or higher. Read into stars what you will, but I don't understand why people insist on making it seem like the stars are always wrong. Sometimes they will, sometimes they won't. Fonzale was a take despite his grade issues because of his film and ability, not star-rating.
  9. One of the big opportunities Fonzale let slip away through this is that Jalen Adams will likely take his spot as a freshman ready to play right away behind Carlos Harris. Adams may very well have been our most athletic signee this year. Just from a pure athleticism standpoint. Adams is not as tailor-made for the slot as Fonzale is, but if he locks down that spot, as well as Turner Smiley and any other potential slot recruits we pull in, we really just may not need Fonzale. As good as he is, JUCO slot receiver is just not a high priority spot in a class. Adams' best fit would've been at corner IMO. On offense he is kind of a tweener. He's more of a long strider, like an outside receiver, but at 5'10"/5'11" his height makes him more of a candidate for slot. Like I said, he is athletic and talented enough where he still has a great chance to thrive in the slot. I'd love to have Fonzale back, but there's a good chance that we won't need immediate impact at slot for 2016, so we won't need to go JUCO there and we'd rather use the spot on a stud high school kid. But we'll see.
  10. Because he did not qualify out of high school he just complete the requirements for an associate's degree before he can enroll at a D1 school.
  11. Texas just received their 4th o-line commitment for 2015. Auburn also has 4 linemen committed (although guard Marquell Harrell has been a very shaky commit and still looking around). I hope we keep pushing hard for this kid. Not only would it be huge to land a kid with this type of offer list, but he could push for playing time early with both our guards graduating.
  12. No. Tep was just being dramatic. We lost our leading rusher but we return the rest of our top guys. And we lost our top 2 receivers but our 3rd through 5th leading receivers are back.
  13. Nah. Vito is only doing this series on kids who we have a realistic shot with. He's not doing these on the Carlos Strickland or Duvonta Lampkin type kids who have probably stopped or never seriously considered us. Most of the defensive linemen we've offered (especially the DTs) have either committed elsewhere already or have too many big-time offers for us to actually have a chance. D-line recruiting is always the most competitive.
  14. I usually don't say when I don't like a prospect, but I just couldn't get behind Hott's film. I still think we end up with Creighton Barr (Cade Erwin's teammate) at center and Abdul Beacham at guard. Beacham said the coaches told him we have 2 interior linemen spots for this class, and those would be them. Then we have 3 spots for offensive tackles (possibly a JUCO LT), according to Beacham.
  15. Looks like Davis won't make it in, but at least O'Keeron Rutherford has made it in and reported, per Vito's article on Cade Erwin. Tough that we couldn't get Davis, but all things considered, things could've been a lot worse than getting 1 out of 2.
  16. Yeah, he'll be fine. Our safeties the past two years haven't been over 190 (realistically, not just based on likely exaggerated listings). Plus, as was said, plenty of time until fall camp 2015 when Erwin will lace em up for us.
  17. I think either Ashton Preston or Nate Brooks may wind up at safety. Brooks has played safety at Whitehouse and Ashton Preston weighs a Sparq verified (not just a phony, listed height) 179 lbs. Preston could easily weigh 190 by the time he gets to campus.
  18. This class has and will be focused on offensive linemen, defensive linemen, receivers, and DBs. But to me the success of this class hinges on the offensive linemen, in particular the tackles. Apparently we are hoping to sign 3 tackles. I think we need to land at least 2 out of Bryce Wilds, Evan Curl, and Larry Hughes.
  19. He signed with Kilgore so he'll be there. I think he would've played this year. Maybe we can get him back, maybe we can't or don't try. Unfortunate. Luckily Adams is maybe our most athletic signee IMO and Ivery can play slot if we need, down the line. Hopefully this means Rutherford made it in, because they both double-signed with Kilgore. I think we need Rutherford more because of our lack of quality size on the outside, especially after this season with 3 of our top 4 outside receivers graduating. Best of luck to Fonzale.
  20. This commitment may mean we just locked up Creighton Barr as well. I believe Vito's recruiting series on Barr said we are recruiting him at center.
  21. FloMo pipeline strikes again! Beat out the ponies for this one! 3rd DB committed for this class
  22. Coleman Feeley kind of kicks ass. I hope we get more players contributing to this program and school like him. We could really use that.
