  1. They weren't suspended from the team, but they're going to be suspended for at least their first game against us for meeting with the agent.
  2. http://fansided.com/2014/07/25/report-charlie-strong-dismisses-joe-bergeron-texas-football-team/#!bl4r2i Had 16 rushing touchdowns in 2012 as a sophomore, and 25 total in his 3 year career. Would've split carries with Malcolm Brown and Jonathon Gray.
  3. Evans isn't very big, though. Wilson has the frame, plus he's coming from a small school where they couldn't have had a very advanced weight program. So Wilson's has good growth potential. Wilson would be asked to carry the shoulder of the load, especially in between the tackles, while Evans and Ivery are used a little more sparingly but are able to be more home-run back types. Fewer carries and yards for them than Wilson, but higher yards per carry.
  4. Yup. He's a solid looking prospect. Very swift athlete, with good size. I see him leading the team in carries in 2016 after Jimmerson leaves. Hopefully this kid stays on track and keeps improving.
  5. There are two major arguments made by athletes as far as getting paid. 1. The "Johnny Manziel" argument. The argument by the select few athletes at big, revenue generating schools like who you see on TV every Saturday wherever you are. The athletes who make their schools much more money than their scholarship and room and board. Guys who want to be paid because they don't believe it's fair for them and their teammates to only get $50-$100K in scholarships over their time in college. Because they realistically make their school millions. Those guys are likely going to be the reason NCAA athletes end up getting paid. 2. The "I can't have a job" argument. Athletes who, individually, either make their school marginally more money than their scholarships (like our program), make just about enough money as they earn in scholarships, or play in a sport where their school loses money off having that program (low attendance sports and almost all female sports). These kids want to be paid not because of the injustice of how much profit they're actually generating for the school, but because they are hurting on cash and can't work because of the amount of practice time their sport takes up. The schools is paying for their books, tuition, housing, meals, and snacks. All the essentials. If they need money after that either their parents should help out, if the parents can't help out they should be able to apply for a grant, or take out a loan. With all the essentials paid for, if a kid in that range where the parents make too much money for a grant but can't help their kid out were to take out a $5000 loan he'd have money to last him throughout college. With all meals paid for and housing paid for, $5000 to go buy a video game here or go out to eat at a restaurant with friends there should be able to last a kid throughout college. To have a degree and graduate college under $10K in debt is very difficult. Almost unheard of if your parents can't help you out at all (like the example mentioned) yet make too much money for grants. Even for college kids who have good jobs. Rent, books, and food are expensive, so to have money left over to pay a significant portion of their tuition is just asking too much. I think the NCAA should start some sort of loan and grant program with academic incentives. For example, with a kid gets no help from their parents yet they make too much money to allow their student-athlete child to qualify for a grant, that kid takes out a $5000 loan. If that kid graduates, part of the loan is forgiven. If a kid makes Dean's list or the conference honor roll, part of the loan is forgiven. If the kids put in the work in the classroom he would graduate with a very minimal debt, considering he had no financial help from his parents. And he would've been able to live comfortably throughout college and have that and education paid for. That just doesn't account for if guys like Johnny Manziel want to make the money they make for their school.
  6. JUCO WR Jarvis Baxter. May not be here for the camp (high school players only I believe). But will be here for a visit and I'd imagine he's on commit watch, as well as most guys coming this weekend.
  7. Will be here Friday with a couple teammates from TVCC.
  8. An extra year in college wouldn't make any difference for these kids. The ones who would go back and get their degree would likely do so whether the rule was 1 year or 2 years. Also, can't compare it to football. Education isn't the reason football players have to stay 3 years. It's health concerns. 19 year olds' bodies are not ready for the NFL. There are rare exceptions (like Clowney). Basketball, if you aren't ready physically you might get bullied down low a little. Or you wouldn't really be affected at all.
  9. https://twitter.com/tweetsbybeech_/status/491743550036398081 It seems pretty likely Beecham will be here.
  10. Graham DE/DT Dustin Mcwhorter will be in attendance
  11. Here's Wilson's teammate, Shaquille Anderson. A 6'1" 300 lb defensive tackle. http://www.hudl.com/athlete/1708884/shaquille-anderson Pretty solid highlights. Needs work on his initial step and pad level among other things, but I was pretty impressed by his highlights. He can move a little for a big guy. He'd definitely be a nose-type kid who eats up blocks, but he also does a good job of making the TFLs. Rather than just drive the o-linemen back. No offers as of yet. Wouldn't mind getting him and Wilson. Still want that Saluone kid out of Utah too.
  12. Yup. And I think we only have 1 more defensive end spot as well. Unless an exceptional one wants to jump on board later like Kenneth Mann or someone like that. Beecham also told Vito that the coaches told him they'd be taking just 2 interior o-linemen. I could see them taking another, but that's something to keep note of.
  13. I think we redshirt Wilson for sure. He's good enough to play right away IMO, but we need him more down the road than this year, because of his size to run in between the tackles. With Pegram still here and Jimmerson, he can use the year to redshirt and get up to speed on the field and in the weightroom, coming from a small 2A school, getting used to D1 ball and college. Ivery could play this year because of his speed. Again, probably don't need him at running back but if he can give us something we don't have then we may use him as a true freshman. He also could potentially be a guy we try and use to replace Chancellor in the return game. But redshirt is possible for Ivery as well.
  14. We signed 2 each the past two years. Shilleci and Chad Davis in 2013 and Kishawn McClain and Andrew Jones last year in our 2014 class. Because of that we don't have a lot of young DBs on the team. That, and because in 2012 we signed 6 DBs, 4 of them have already left the program (Xavier Kelly, Devante Davis, David Busby, Jamarcus Jarvis), 1 was a JUCO and graduated (DQ Johnson), and the only remaining 1 plays linebacker now (Jamal Marshall).
  15. We've received 2 verbal commitments today. Zavian Bingham, JUCO cornerback. Will enroll this upcoming spring. And Taylor Robinson. Cornerback from Keller Central and former teammate of 2014 signee TJ Tauaalo. Robinson had an amazing junior year, earning honorable mention all-state honors while collecting 9 interceptions. We now already have 5 defensive backs committed for this class.
  16. Another commit!! This post has been promoted to an article
  17. With our depth at running back, something had to give. We were 8 deep at running back, as far as scholarship kids. Jimmerson (JR), Pegram (SR), Rollins (RS SO), Lewis (RS SO), Erick Evans (RS FR), Andrew Tucker (RS FR), Jeffery Wilson (FR), and Willy Ivery (FR). And only one being a senior in Pegram. Lewis leaving puts a lot of importance on Jeffery Wilson going forward. Our other young backs are all smaller, speed-type guys. Wilson has good speed too, but he is the only one with the size to be constantly running in between the tackles after Pegram and Jimmerson graduate. I really like Ezzard too. I watched him play a lot in high school and I was pretty surprised watching him not get any offers throughout the process. Very glad he chose to walkon here.
  18. http://meangreenblog.dentonrc.com/2014/07/unt-lands-juco-corner.html/#sthash.K4JLhADH.dpuf "I talked to the coach and he told me about all the available SPOTS that are going to be available when I come in," Bingham said. At his speed he is a tailor-made corner. But he said the coaches talked to him about spots, plural. Maybe reading too much into that quote, but I wonder if that means he'll be given a chance at safety as well. There's only going to be one open spot at corner after this season. But there are two total spots in the secondary opening up with Jones and Lairamie Lee being seniors. Or maybe move Buyers to safety after the season, opening up two spots at corner for next year. We'll see, but I'm just very curious at seeing how our coaches handle our safety situation going forward.
  19. Good question. Maybe not. We only have 1 true safety in this class in Cade Erwin. Preston is big enough to potentially play safety and Brooks played free safety last season for his high school, but for now they are CBs. Bingham seems like a CB as well. So we are likely done at corner, but potentially could have another spot open for a safety or another corner if we move Preston or Brooks to safety. In 2015 (when this class arrives) we will have just 4 safeties returning from this season's roster, at the most. Assuming everyone returns. Freddie Warner, Mathew Dash, John Shilleci, and Kishawn McClain. Warner and Dash will be seniors that year, so we need Erwin and another young safety to give us depth at safety for the 2015 season and beyond.
