  1. Little Rock integrated in 1957 under a court order with federal marshals and an army airborne division.(The 101st?)
  2. You are breaking my heart with those old memories, GrayEagle. By the way, do you remember when the Jack Parr Tonight Show came to campus and did a segment on the program about the campus and the Lab Band? Just watching that piece that night convinced me that I was at a special place at at a special time. It is so sad to think that when A@M was going through big changes by going coed and all, they made sure they held on to their traditions and even reinforced them, while ours were falling by the wayside. When the new union is complete, we need to bring back the weekly One O'Clock performances and have them play outside again. I can still remember how the entire campus was drawn to the union back then when they began to play. We were a small campus back then, but a REAL campus. Does anyone remember the NT Push? It was all ours.
  3. Your point about the Union is well taken, Harry. I have always believed that the heart was cut out of student life on this campus when the old OLD UB (thats what we called it) was demolished and replaced with what was basically a bus station. That building, in my opinion, was intentionally designed to stifle and discourage student interaction that had been so vibrant in the old building. I will always blame the stuffy old pedagogues in the administration back then for that tragedy. For those of you that don't remember the old union , ask some old grads and you will hear tales of a campus that was so alive and fun that you may find it hard to believe. Here's hoping the new union resurrects those days and creates a renaissance of things past.
  4. SMU this SMU that. I'm SICK of it. How can they become so good almost literally overnight while while we sink past mediocrity and into oblivion? This is not a rhetorical question.
  5. Cheapness in our athletic program is our DNA, it is our tradition and it still defines us. It is atavistic and it will take a concentrated effort and real commitment to change it. Other schools have made that commitment and if we wish to be a player in Division 1 athletics we need to make that commitment as well. We have done it a bit here and there in recent year but it is time to go whole hog or forget about it.
  6. I thought the same thing that night "Stan R". What we failed to realize was that Dodge was still a high school coach with a high school defensive coordinator who couldn't park a bicycle. We have grown both in wisdom and resources since then.
  7. I just wish Denton County supported the Mean Green as enthusiastically as Tarrant County supports the Frogs. With all of the pro sports (oxymoron) around here, TCU still maintains a loyal fan base in Ft. Worth. We need that kind of fan base and if we continue to be successful and come up with some good creative marketing perhaps we will.
  8. We came close twice in the 70's under Hayden Fry and, of course, we really won in 88, but it ain't gonna happen in 2014. D! inequality is similar to income inequality these days. I just hope our fans and team make a good showing and come away relatively unscathed. Often, a team will stumble a bit in it's first game under a new head coach, but Strong seems to be out to prove something quickly and we are his first chance. On the other hand, I often reminisce about the halcyon days of my misspent youth and of a warm Saturday night in Little Rock when the impossible came so close to happening.
  9. For those of us who have been going to Denton from Dallas forever the trip is not a big deal, but for those not used to it the trip is a real pain - especially at night. We need to utilize the ATrain as we did for the HOD and work on getting more Denton county residents to the games. We need to work toward the kind of fan base in Denton that Tech has in Lubbock, Baylor has in Waco and TCU has in Ft. Worth. Not all of those fans are alumni of those respective schools, but they do support the local team. I'm not sure how to accomplish this, but it is something we need to work on.
  10. I agree. Those are the only combinations that make sense contrast wise.
  11. Good point, Plumm. Perhaps one reason those buyers are in the dark about us is the sorry state of major media coverage on our athletic teams in DFW. Recent case in point: Sat. night Channel 8 sports announced about 20 basketball scores and we were not even mentioned. Of course, after the shellacking we took from Tulsa, perhaps Channel 8 was just being merciful. Still...
  12. Any news on the possible train trip someone mentioned earlier? The train, Harry, The train!
  13. I know, but he has remained somewhat similar throughout the years. Our newer Scrappy's are not even shadows of the 50's 60's Scrappy, but have become buffed up cliches. If nothing else that Scrappy LOOKED scrappy, was very popular and seen everywhere. There has not been a Scrappy since as ubiquitous. As for Bill McClanahan, his characters appeared every Friday in the DMN during football season. I don't know if he created that Scrappy or not, but Scrappy would not have appeared often among his characters because we seldom played SWC schools in those days. Thanks for bringing up McClanahan, SilverEagle. I wish all of his characters would return along with every knotted tail, bump on the head and bandage that represented each loss for that particular season. Sometimes after numerous losses some of them would be on crutches and occasionally even buried under a R.I.P. headstone.
  14. I will not give up on old Scrappy. He was our Kansas Jayhawk, our Peruna. our Horney Toad etc. He was unique and he was all ours. God help us If he is not resurrected for our future will surely be filled with frustration, heartbreak, terrible wailing and the gnashing of teeth.
  15. Bring back the old, OLD Scrappy and maybe we could bring back some old, old fans. He was such an icon. Perhaps someone could put up his image. Being old, old myself, I don't know how.
  16. I had rather freeze in Evansville than live in agony from the humidity, heat and smog of Houston. Denton is just right.
  17. Make that Kimball and let's not forget that it was only year or so ago when one could walk into an SMU basketball game for free. That is what I call a turn around.
  18. The assistant coach going to Kimble in person to ask about a grade that was a matter of record and that he should already been aware of is fishy to me. If I'm misreading this let me know.
  19. This reasoning is a bit far fetched and even sketchy, but sometimes the first game under a new coach comes off a little clunky. I doubt that we will beat Texas, of course, but perhaps we can make a game of it.
  20. I ain't talking while the flavor lasts.
  21. And that was at one of only two Texas D1 colleges (Rice is the other) that have never been on NCAA probation. Our administration back then must have been a bunch of back-woods pedagogues who would have made Larry, Moe and Curly look downright brilliant.
  22. Funny, foutroutes, Is he still in jail, or dead?
  23. I agree. Bob Tyler just about did us in and came very close to sending us the way of UTA.
  24. He was unbelievable, Gradean. Like you, I would isolate him on many plays and miss whatever else was going on. He was one of finest football players to ever come out of the state of Texas and was arguably the best defensive lineman to ever play for a Texas school. He will always be one of the top defensive tackles in the NFL as well.
